DelightfulBy K. CelataI've been a dedicated fan of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories since I was a child, but had never read his other works. These stories are a treasure. Clever, well-written, spooky or gently macabre, each one is a gem. I looked forward every night to reading one or two before bed. Don't deny yourself this pleasure.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. No Holmes, But Plenty of SurprisesBy Danielle N. HartOverall, a really good collection. Some of the stories are better than others, and some are more overtly creepy than the others. Some of them are "haunting" rather than scary, like the one about the Chinese mission station awaiting a relief that comes just a little too late, and the story about "Devil Bollamore"'s tutor and a devoted wife's last stand for her husband's soul. There's also a great story about a mysterious disappearance from a train, and one about an ingenious plan to become the only heir that backfires. It's definitely worth a read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four StarsBy Jack D.Interesting to read stories that were the start of today's modern mysteries and thrillers. Originally published in 1908 and out of print for more than half a century, this collection of stories, complete with a Preface by the author, presents Sir Arthur Conan Doyle at his finest. These are seventeen tales of suspense and adventure, of the mysterious and the fantastic, meant to be read "round the fire" upon a winter's night. Murder, madness, ghosts, unsolved crimes, diabolical traps, and inexplicable disappearances abound in these exciting accounts narrated by doctors, lawyers, genetlemen, teachers, burglars, dilettantes, and convicted criminals. The titles are inviting "The Pot of Caviare," "The Clubfooted Grocer," "The Brazilian Cat," "The Sealed Room," and "There Fiend of the Coopergate" and the stories are riveting. This is a rediscovered classic by a master storyteller." Contents: I. The Leather Funnel II. The Beetle Hunter III. The Man with the Watches IV. The Pot of Caviare V. The Japanned Box VI. The Black Doctor VII. Playing with Fire VIII. The Jews' Breastplate IX. The Lost Special X. The Club-Footed Grocer XI. The Sealed Room XII. The Brazilian Cat XIII. The Usher of Lea House School XIV. The Brown Hand XV. The Fiend of the Copperage XVI. Jelland's Voyage XVII. B. 24 About the AuthorThe creator of Sherlock Holmes, the world's most famous literary detective. Born in Scotland, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a practising doctor when he began to write tales of mystery and adventure. In addition to the Sherlock Holmes stories, Conan Doyle also wrote the Professor Challenger adventures, and his classic, The Lost World, is one of the original fantasy novels. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh's Medical School. Graduating in 1881, he set up practice as an occultist, but as patients proved elusive he turned to writing. An important influence upon his literary career was his professor, Dr Joseph Bell, who could observe the most minute detail regarding a patient's condition. This master of deduction became the model for Conan Doyle's legendary literary creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, introduced in A Study in Scarlet in 1887. Conan Doyle also espoused spiritualism and devoted considerable time and effort to a campaign of support for this cause. He also wrote successfully in genres other than detective fiction. His non-fiction includes military writing on the Boer War and pamphlets on spiritualism. It is known that he felt constricted at times by the popularity of Holmes, but it is nevertheless for Sherlock Holmes and his foil, the ponderous Dr Watson that he is best remembered. As Sherlock Holmes was the first detective to solve cases by deduction rather than due to an error by the criminal, Conan Doyle can be credited with creating the modern detective novel. He was knighted in 1902 for his support of the British cause in the Boer Wars. After the death of his son in the First World War, he devoted the rest of his life to spiritualism on which he wrote and lectured. From AudioFileConan Doyle's diverse interests and areas of expertise (the grotesque, occult, diabolical traps, inexplicable disappearances, murder and madness) are featured in this collection. The narration perfectly recreates the speech of the era; John is at once judgmental and poetic while using a scary voice when appropriate. His American accents are realistic, avoiding the exaggeration sometimes adopted by British readers. Since this is a period piece, the audio format captures the listener's attention better than reading in print. Lovers of good suspense, as well as wordsmiths, will enjoy. S.G.B.
