Just Between You and Me: A Memoir. By Myles Goodwyn. Toronto, Ontario: Harper Collins, 2016. 379 pp. ISBN 978-1- 44344-670-9. Reviewed by: David Montgomery, York University Libraries1 The story arc of any rock memoir is predictable. It begins or ends with substance abuse, there are troubled family relationships, extra-marital affairs, betrayals, friends left behind, “musical differences,” management conflicts, and of course, as in any bildungsroman the vicissitude of fortune. The guitar slinger turned raconteur is duty-bound to caution that even modest fame comes at a price, that “rock and roll is a vicious game.” Like the music, the memoir embraces the cliché. On his third go at rehab, April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn reflects, “Things come in threes” (341). Goodwyn tells us that the goal of his unvarnished memoir was to set the record straight, and not to settle old scores. Neither as beloved as Rush, nor as emblematic as The Tragically Hip, April Wine was nonetheless quintessentially Canadian. With roots in the Maritimes and Quebec, the band regularly toured Ontario rock circuits in the early 1970s, expanding its range to the rest of Canada by the end of the decade. It peaked in the early 1980s, with modest success in England and the US, and garnered worldwide sales of 20 million albums—a solid career. Yet, despite winning several Juno awards and in 2010 being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, April Wine may also be a candidate for a quick fade. While songs such as “Weeping Widow,” “Oowatanite,” and “Roller” may resonate with the home demographic, future induction into Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is unlikely.

At Mark Ritchie and Cherry Allen’s farm, 1124 sheep were shorn in an eight hour period by three shearers. The previous record of shearing just over 900 sheep was set in the State of Oregon a few years ago. Leading shearer Don Metheral of Creemore, Ontario brought professional shearers from the United States to work with him. Alex Moser of Iowa sheared 423, Nolan Abel also from Iowa sheared 374, with Canadian Don Metheral Shearing 327. Kevin Hickman, a shearing contractor from Missouri organized the American shearers. Extra help collecting sheep and bagging wool was provided by Dan Simpson, Cherry’s daughter Tagget Bonham-Carter and Cherry’s grandson David Bonham-Carter. The current COVID-19 regulations have affected the leisure and entertainment industry around the world. What this means, is that our partner in the live event for 2021 is closed and will probably not re-open until after Easter 2021. Our thoughts are with Jim and the team of the Idle Drapers and look forward to creating a special set of screenings later on. The Haunted House FearFest will however take place online as an international virtual theatre experience via XERB.TV. It takes place from 12th to 21st March 2021 and we have a horribly good selection independent short and feature films from around the world. In fact, we had an amazing response that covered 23 countries. Sadly, we had to make a decision as to what gets the bloody thumbs up and what gets the chop. Our final selection is 77 films screening in 13 rooms. No need to be bored during the lockdown, that’s for sure! All our selected films received a laurel and winners in each category will receive a PDF certificate. The outstanding film of the festival will receive the Grimm reaper award. The winners and semi-finalists will be announced on Sunday 21st March. Wretchedly yours, The Haunted House Team TICKETS & PASSES: Tickets on the opening page: https://xerb.tv/channel/hauntedhousefearfest/virtual-events
