Members of the European Parliament Mr Janusz Wojciechowski Commissioner for Agriculture European Commission Rue de la Loi 200 B-1049 Bruxelles Mr Virginijus Sinkevičius Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries European Commission Rue de la Loi 200 B-1049 Bruxelles Brussels, 11 November 2020 Subject: Deforestation and illegal logging of Romania’s primary forests Dear Commissioners, we, the undersigned Members of the European Parliament, are addressing you to express our deep concerns about massive violations of the protection of Natura 2000 areas, primary and ancient forests and UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Romania. In Romania, deforestation caused by illegal logging is continuing on an alarming scale. It threatens the last and irreplaceable primary forests in the EU, which are more crucial than ever in the fight against climate change and for the preservation of biodiversity. According to expert estimates, up to two thirds of the EU’s remaining primary forests are located in Romania. Largely untouched areas in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains and the Făgăraș Mountains have survived until today – a European if not global heritage of invaluable ecological value. Some of these forests are also included in the List of World Heritage Sites UNESCO.1 Now, ruthless greed and large-scale corruption are seriously endangering these European natural treasures and the time for protective measures is running out. If no immediate action is taken, the still existing forests will soon be lost forever. Since the launch of the European Commission’s infringement procedure against Romania on 12 February 2020 for failing to establish effective measures against illegal logging2, thousands more hectares were destroyed.

  • European Alliance for a Green Recovery
Launch of the European alliance for a Green Recovery Press Release Under embargo until 14/04 7:00am At the initiative of Pascal Canfin, Chair of the Environment Committee at the European Parliament, 180 political decision-makers, business leaders, trade unions, NGOs, and think tanks have come together to form a European alliance for a Green Recovery. In the face of the coronavirus crisis, the biggest challenge Europe has faced in peacetime, with devastating consequences and a shock to the economy tougher than the 2008 crisis, Ministers from 11 countries, 79 cross-party MEPs from 17 Member States, 37 CEOs, 28 business associations representing 10 different sectors, trade union confederation representing members from 90 national trade union organisations and 10 trade union federations, 7 NGOs and 6 think tanks, have committed to working together to create, support and implement solutions to prepare our economies for the world of tomorrow. This first pan-European call for mobilisation on post-crisis green investment packages will work to build the recovery and transformation plans which enshrine the fight against climate change and biodiversity as a key pillar of the economic strategy. Sharing the belief that the economic recovery will only come with massive investments to protect and create jobs and to support all companies, regions and sectors that have suffered from the economy coming to a sudden halt, the alliance commits to contribute to the post-crisis investment decisions needed to reboot and reboost our economy. Covid-19 will not make climate change and nature degradation go away. The fight against this crisis will not be won without a solid economic response.

  • The Similarities and the Differences in the Functioning of the European Right Wing: an Attempt to Integrate the European Conservatives and Christian Democrats
Journal of Social Welfare and Human Rights, Vol. 1 No. 2, December 2013 1 The Similarities and the Differences in the Functioning of the European Right Wing: An Attempt to Integrate the European Conservatives and Christian Democrats Dr. Kire Sarlamanov1 Dr. Aleksandar Jovanoski2 Abstract The text reviews the attempt of the European Conservative and Christian Democratic Parties to construct a common platform within which they could more effectively defend and develop the interests of the political right wing in the European Parliament. The text follows the chronological line of development of events, emphasizing the doctrinal and the national differences as a reason for the relative failure in the process of unification of the European right wing. The subcontext of the argumentation protrudes the ideological, the national as well as the religious-doctrinal interests of some of the more important Christian Democratic, that is, conservative parties in Europe, which emerged as an obstacle of the unification. One of the more important problems that enabled the quality and complete unification of the European conservatives and Christian Democrats is the attitude in regard to the formation of EU as a federation of countries. The weight down of the British conservatives on the side of the national sovereignty and integrity against the Pan-European idea for united European countries formed on federal basis, is considered as the most important impact on the unification of the parties from the right ideological spectrum on European land. Key words: Conservative Party, Christian Democratic Party, CDU European Union, European People’s Party. 1. Introduction On European land, the trend of connection of political parties on the basis of ideology has been notable for a long time.

  • The European Conservatives and Reformists in the European Parliament
The European Conservatives and Reformists in the European Parliament Standard Note: SN/IA/6918 Last updated: 16 June 2014 Author: Vaughne Miller Section International Affairs and Defence Section Parties are continuing negotiations to form political groups in the European Parliament (EP) following European elections on 22-25 May 2014. This note looks at the future composition of the European Conservatives and Reformists group (ECR), which was established by UK Conservatives when David Cameron took them out of the centre-right EPP-ED group in 2009. It also considers what the entry of the German right-wing Alternative für Deutschland group into the ECR group might mean for Anglo-German relations. The ECR might become the third largest political group in the EP, although this depends on support for the Liberals and Democrats group. The final number and composition of EP political groups will not be known until after 24 June 2014, which is the deadline for registering groups. For detailed information on the EP election results, see Research paper 14/32, European Parliament Elections 2014, 11 June 2014. • Volodymyr Zelensky President Ukraine CC
Volodymyr Zelensky President Ukraine CC: Federica Mogherini High Representative of the Union Brussels, 04 september 2019 Dear President, It has come to our attention that the Russian Federation has requested that Mr Vladimir Borisovich Tsemakh be handed over as part of a prisoner exchange negotiated between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Mr Tsemakh is a former commander of pro-Russian air defence forces in the non-government controlled territory of the so-called "Donetsk People's Republic" and is a key suspect in the tragedy of passenger flight MH17, shot down in eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014 by a Russian BUK missile. All 298 people on board, including 196 Dutch, were killed. While we understand the context within which such negotiations are taking place and the diplomatic efforts by the Ukrainian authorities to this end, Mr Tsemakh is a suspect in the criminal investigation related to the downing of flight MH17 and his availability and testimony before the Joint Investigation Team is thus of the utmost importance for an effective prosecution by the countries involved. Mr Tsemakh is a Ukrainian citizen and is under Ukrainian custody. UNSC resolution 2166 demands that those directly or indirectly responsible for the downing of MH17 must be held accountable and must be brought to justice. The European Parliament and the European Council have reiterated on numerous occasions their full support to the work of the Joint Investigation Team and the ongoing efforts. All States that are in a position to assist with the investigation and prosecution of those responsible must fully cooperate with the ongoing criminal investigation.
