August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th. -

Venturing in the Slipstream
VENTURING IN THE SLIPSTREAM THE PLACES OF VAN MORRISON’S SONGWRITING Geoff Munns BA, MLitt, MEd (hons), PhD (University of New England) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Western Sydney University, October 2019. Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution. .............................................................. Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts. -

The 105Th State Convention
Welcome to the 105th State Convention Terry Detrick, President Welcome to the 105th Annual AFR Convention! “New Directions” is the theme of our two-day convention. The theme reflects not only the challenges that we as a company and organization have faced since the last convention but also new opportunities to create a roadmap of stabilization and future growth. As your President, I work for you, the membership and policyholders, and I am honored to do so. This is ‘your’ American Farmers and Ranchers Mutual Insurance Company and ‘your’ OFU COOP Organization and I feel very strongly about that. ‘You’ will be determining our long-term direction during the business session for American Farmers & Ranchers on Friday afternoon with financial reports, officer reports, by-laws proposals and consideration of legislative policy. Friday evening activities will consist of the Live PAC Auction featuring the winner of the Livestock Marketing Association’s “World Championship” Auctioneer contest. The Auction will be followed by a short talk by each candidate as they are introduced. Delegates are able to vote upon arrival but may want to wait before casting their vote until candidates speak on Friday evening. Voting booths will be open as registration opens on Friday and until 10 p.m. Friday night— also from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Saturday sessions are devoted to educational speakers on state and national legislative issues, research and education, grain and beef prices projections, agriculture mediation, farm to school and oilseeds opportunities, and mineral and wind leasing.
