Little by little I've seen that my original training was sound, provocative, and instructive, so I'll quote Pound, Williams, R.Creeley, Ginsberg and show how their dictums apply to today's writing. The guidance is crucially important now that we're entering a time similar to the 1960s when we are at odds with our government, the Sixth Extinction looms globally, and politically we're in decades similar to what Chaucer called "this sour and hungry time." Clive Matson (MFA Columbia University 1989) hung out in New York in the early 1960s with Beat Generation writers and that immersed him in streams of passionate intensity that run through us all. He writes from the itch in his body to the delight of his students according to Let the Crazy Child Write! (1998). He’s published nine volumes of poetry and his seventh book, Squish Boots (2002), was placed in John Wieners’ coffin. He received the PEN Oakland Josephine Miles National Literary Award in 2003 and the City of Berkeley Lifetime Achievement Award in Poetry in 2012. -

Portents 18. Portents, 1970. BROADSIDES PROLIFERATED during the small press and mimeograph era as a logical offshoot of poets assuming control of their means of publication. When technology evolved from typewriter, stencil, and mimeo machine to moveable type and sophisticated printing, broadsides provided a site for innovation with design and materials that might not be appropriate for an entire pamphlet or book; thus, they occupy a very specific place within literary and print culture. Poem on the Page: A Collection of Broadsides includes approximately 500 broadsides from a diverse range of poets, printers, designers, and publishers. It is a unique document of a particular aspect of the small press movement as well as a valuable resource for research into the intersection of poetry and printing. Historical Background In 1953 Stan Phillips was a motion picture and audio-visual consultant at Western Cine, a film laboratory and sound recording and editing studio in Denver, Colorado. He was also the cinematographer for Interim, an experimental short film directed by his childhood friend, poet and filmmaker Stan Brakhage, who had become friends with Robert Creeley and James Broughton. -

THE BERKELEY POETRY CONFERENCE ENTRY FROM WIKIPEDIA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Poetry_Conference Leaders of what had at this time had been termed a revolution in poetry presented their views and the poems in seminars, lectures, individual readings, and group readings at California Hall on the Berkeley Campus of the University of California during July 12-24, 1965. The conference was organized through the University of California Extension Programs. The advisory committee consisted of Thomas Parkinson, Professor of English at U.C. Berkeley, Donald M. Allen, West Coast Editor of Grove Press, Robert Duncan, Poet, and Richard Baker, Program Coordinator.
