Through the years, defense has usually been a given for coach Jose Rebimbas’ squad, perennially ranked among the top Division III teams in that category. In many of those years, the transition game and perimeter shooting have been very much to the 10th-year coach’s liking.

This season, he sees all of those ingredients melding together to make the Pioneers (16-11, 6-7 NJAC) a New Jersey Athletic Conference title contender. Mario Rivero

“We’re going to be a lot more athletic than we’ve been in the past,” Rebimbas said enthusiastically. “We have eight new faces who will contribute. We’re taller than we’ve been and we’ll look to push the ball a little more in transition because a lot of guys on our roster can handle the ball. Also, our perimeter shooting should be good.”

Rebimbas likes the talent and versatility the Pioneers’ backcourt possesses. Senior Robert Nick Torres Sullivan, a transfer from Division II Minnesota State, is slated to start at point guard. His poise and selflessness will provide a calming effect on the offense. Fellow senior and co-captain Jason Vieira, a four-year contribu- tor, is among the team’s top athletes and will see time off the bench. At shooting guard is 6- foot-5 junior Feron McGee, a transfer from Brookdale Commu- nity College, who, according to Rebimbas, “Handles and passes like a point guard and scores like a wing player.”

Jason Vieira

Freshman Joey Spiegel, an All- Bergen County player at Teaneck High School last year, adds a capable scorer at either guard position. Others who will add depth to the Pioneers’ talented backcourt will include junior Kevin DelosAngeles, sopho- mores Andrew Ignaffo and Jon Torbick, and freshman Chris Severe.

On the wing is junior co-captain Mario Rivero (4.7 ppg), who showed flashes of vast offensive Luis Martinez potential last winter. He is also the Pioneers’ top one-on-one defender according to Rebimbas. Junior Samir Sanu, a 6-5 transfer from Rider University, is an adept perimeter shooter who can step in seamlessly at either small or power forward.

Adding depth at small forward are sophomore Ricky Wallace, a terrific defender who has im- proved his perimeter game, and freshman Jason Cameron, a strong 3-point shooter.

Nick Torres, a 6-7 junior co- captain, is the team’s top rebounder and will start at power forward. He has added an outside shot to his low-post repertoire. Sophomore Luis Martinez, also 6- 7, enjoyed a superb offseason and will compete with 6-7 junior Ricky Wallace Miguel Rodriguez, a junior college All-American last year at Brookdale Community College, to start at center. Junior Justin Lauer, a 6-6 senior, will also see action at the “four” and “five” spots.

JOSE REBIMBAS

Season: 10th Career Record: 187-85 Alma Mater: Seton Hall ‘90 Degrees: B.S. in Marketing M.A. in General Professional Education (‘92)

It is one thing to recruit talent. Jose Rebimbas has proven he can do that in abundance through the years. Developing it is another challenge altogether. Rebimbas has achieved this on a consistent basis, establishing William Paterson as one of the nation’s top Division III programs.

Although rosters inevitably change from season to season, THROUGH THE Rebimbas consistently puts a YEARS winning product on the hardwood. He has guided the Year Record (NJAC) Pioneers to eight straight 2003-04 16-11 (6-7) winning seasons, with the 2002-03 19-7 (13-5) 2001-02@# 19-10 (12-6) program producing at least 15 2000-01@% 26-5 (15-3) wins in each of those 1999-00@% 23-5 (15-3) campaigns and more than 20 on 1998-99# 19-12 (11-7) three occasions. From Sweet 16 there, he fills in spots in his rotation with quality players who can shoot from long distance, excel in the low post and use their athleticism to make the Pioneers’ press work even better.

Rebimbas started his coaching career as an assistant at Montclair State (1991-93) and took over as interim coach in 1994, leading the Red Hawks to the NCAA Division III Tournament the year before his arrival at William Paterson. Previously he played four years at Seton Hall (1988-91) and was a member of the Pirates’ squad that played for the 1989 NCAA Division I championship.

Assistant Coach

BRIAN CHAPMAN

Season: 10th Alma Mater: Ramapo ‘86 Degree: B.S. in Business Administration

An integral part of the program since entering with head coach Jose Rebimbas in 1995, Chapman’s work with the Pioneers’ frontcourt players has helped the program maintain its place among the New Jersey Athletic Conference and Mid-Atlantic Region elite.

William Paterson has routinely outrebounded opponents during his tenure, including a plus-8.3 rebounding edge in 2002-03 that helped the Pioneers tie for 12th in Division III. This is a credit to the forwards he has helped develop. The list runs on and on through the years. During his early days, it was the duo of David Coleman and Gerard Wilson. On the 1999 and 2001 Final Four teams, as well as the 2001-02 NJAC Championship squad, it was the talented quartet of Keyth Hardy, Terrance McNeal, Ray Ortiz and Mufeed Thomas. More recently, he has fine-tuned the skills of junior Nick Torres and sophomore Luis Martinez.

With his help, the Pioneers have recorded nine straight winning seasons, five NCAA Division III tournament appearances (1997, 1999- 2002), three NJAC consecutive championships (2000-02), two trips to the Division III Final Four (1999 and 2001) and a spot in the 2001 national championship game.

Prior to his arrival, Chapman served as the head coach at Hudson County Prep from 1993-95. Before that, he was the junior varsity and varsity assistant coach at Don Bosco Prep from 1991-93.

Chapman was married in July to wife Shannon, a teacher and volleyball, basketball and softball coach at Hawthorne High School. They reside in Hawthorne.

Assistant Coach

BRIAN CAMERON

Season: First Alma Mater: Rutgers University ‘01 Degree: B.A. in Political Science

Cameron’s previous coaching experiences made him a good fit to help with the Pioneers’ backcourt this season. He knows the New Jersey Athletic Conference, having served as an assistant coach at Ramapo

College in 2002-03. Also, he knows North Jersey, having served two stints as an assistant coach at Cliffside Park High School (2000-02, 2003-04) and will help with recruiting.

Cameron’s younger brother, Jason, is a freshman guard for the Pioneers. Brian is currently employed as an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Garfield and is working toward the completion of his Master’s degree in teaching and administration from St. Peter’s College. He resides in Cliffside Park.

Assistant Coach

JASON GELESKI

Season: First Alma Mater: Montclair State ‘95 Major: Business

As familiar as Pioneers’ head coach Jose Rebimbas is with Geleski’s coaching talents and leadership abilities from when he coached him at Montclair State from 1993-95, Geleski’s selflessness on the court left a lasting impression off it.

A member of the U.S. Army since 1989, Geleski was an Infantry Officer who served as second in command of an Infantry Air Assault Company in the Sunni Triangle in Iraq. However, injuries sustained there forced him to be medevacced out of Iraq last April. Now healthy, he is currently stationed at Fort Drum, NY and assists in training and deploying troops to Iraq. On weekends, he resumes his coaching career.

In addition to his military experience, Geleski’s has a rich basketball background. He helped Division II Felician College start its basketball program in 1995-96 as an assistant coach, and took over the program the following year before taking a hiatus from coaching. Prior to that, he walked on at Montclair State and helped the Red Hawks make two NCAA Division III playoff appearances. In 1995, he hit 44.2 percent of his 3-point attempts (23 of 52), the second best single-season total in Montclair State history.

A onetime standout at Hasbrouck Heights High School, Geleski resides in New York with his wife, Thekla, an attorney. They were married by former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in New York City on July 30, 2004.

Men’s Basketball 21 HORACEHORACE JENKINS’JENKINS’ RISERISE TOTO THETHE NBANBA

From his first crossover dribble at William Paterson, Horace Jenkins’ story seemed destined for a happy ending. Plaudits upon plaudits showered him with each silky jumpshot and soaring dunk. NBA scouts lined the press row tables at the William Paterson Rec Center.

With each move to the basket, Jenkins moved further from working as an electrician and postal worker around his hometown of Elizabeth and closer to basketball glory. It all culminated this summer when the 30-year-old guard and the Pioneers’ all-time leading scorer signed a guaranteed contract with the 2004 NBA champion Detroit Pistons after impressing the franchise’s hierarchy playing for its summer league team.

A nice story, sure, but not without a few “I think he can help the flight of steps to climb. Detroit Pistons and, at the same time, continue After starring at to do our men’s Elizabeth High School, Jenkins basketball program and seemingly aban- the entire William doned his hoop dreams. He found Paterson University day-to-day work as community proud.” an electrician, a plumber ... anything to pay the bills. Then William Paterson fate found him at head coach Jose Rebimbas Newark’s Branch Brook Park in the person of William Paterson head coach Jose Rebimbas. A few phone calls and a few more months later, Jenkins was ready to take Division III by storm: he captured three New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year awards (1999-2001) and led the Pioneers to the NCAA tournament each season, including trips to the Final Four in 1999 and 2001. In the latter season, he was named the National Basketball Coaches Association’s Division III Player of the Year.

With articles in Sports Illustrated and features on ESPN to his credit, Jenkins’ story would become legend when drafted by an NBA team in 2001. Alas, that never came to pass. This led him to playing profession- ally in Italy and Greece, where he became a star. Yet, something was unfulfilled.

His NBA dream.

If Jenkins was going to make this a great story, he needed to play against Jason Kidd, Tony Parker and other superstar guards nightly. Sure enough, his quickness and decision making opened more eyes.

Detroit President of Basketball Operations , a former NBA standout, was watching videotapes of Jenkins’ exploits abroad. With each tape, he noticed the same things Rebimbas noticed when he first

Horace Jenkins saw him at Branch Brook Park. Not long after came an invitation to the Pistons’ summer-league team. A few strong performances later and Jenkins had earned a guaranteed contract from the defending champions.

With that, Jenkins’ saga came closer to completion: from odd jobs to a gig with the NBA champions. He became the fourth Pioneer to play professionally and the second on an NBA roster. Clinton Wheeler played for several NBA teams in the 1970s and 1980s.

“It is a credit to Horace that he came in here with a drive to succeed and make something of himself through the game of basketball,” Rebimbas said. “He certainly helped us win a lot of championships and made us visible on the national level. I think he can help the Detroit Pistons and, at the same time, continue to do our men’s basketball program and the entire William Paterson University community proud.”
