2005-06 SWIMMING & DIVING 3 COACHING STAFF

Gurka enters his 30th season as William Paterson’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach on the cusp of three milestones. He begins the 2005-06 season two wins away from 250 victories coaching the women and 12 from 250 for the men. Overall, this leaves him just 14 triumphs away from 500 in a distinguished career that has seen him build the Pioneers into one of the most successful programs in the region.

Making history is nothing new to Gurka. In 1989, he became the first swim coach in NCAA (all levels) history to win 100 meets as coach of both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at one school. However, he is quick to deflect the praise and points out that it is the day-in, day-out dedication and preparation of his student-athletes that produced these results.

Gurka has coached 19 All-Americans, the most recent being six-time honoree and current standout Kristin Clegg, who has set school records in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard backstroke. He also helped Joe Gentile win five national championships (including two then-Division III records) in the 1980s en route to being named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Male Student-Athlete of the 1980s.

Gentile is one of six former swimmers Gurka coached that have earned entry into the William Paterson University Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame. The other five are Brian Lavin (’89), Tonya Shipp Bradshaw (’91), Connie Wassberg (’92), Melissa Bedford-Gutekunst (’93), and Laurie Gazdalski Genna (’96).

In addition to coaching the Pioneer swim teams, Gurka also oversees the U.S.S. (United States Swimming) Pioneer Aquatic Club, a group based out of Wightman Pool that develops young swimmers and divers. A fair share of those competitors have taken to the waters for William Paterson.

A three-time all-state swimmer at Wayne Valley High School, Gurka teaches adapted physical education at the Bergen Center for Child Development in Haworth. He currently resides in Pompton Plains with his wife, Janet. They have three children: sons Eddie (20) and Brian (15) and daughter Lauren (14). Eddie is a swimmer at Marist College.

4 2005-06 SWIMMING & DIVING COACHING STAFF

A mainstay of the coaching staff since the 1981-82 season, McDonough’s expertise with divers has helped the Pioneers produce several national qualifiers. Most prominent among them was Steve Brown, an All-American in 1984-85.

McDonough owns a lawn care business and resides in New City, NY, with his wife Roseanne and their three children.

Plewa joins the coaching staff after a stellar four-year career competing for the Pioneers. She was captain of the team in her senior year and swam the backstroke and individual medley. She received the Ralph E. Smith Award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average, at the 2005 William Paterson Senior Athletic Awards dinner.

Plewa has been an assistant coach on the Pioneer Aquatic Club for the last five years, and is on schedule to earn a B.S. in exercise and movement science with a concentration in exercise physiology in May 2006. She resides in Rahway.

Schreyer joins the staff after a four-year swimming career with the Pioneers that saw him reach 11th place on the school’s all-time points scored list with 397.75. He was captain in both junior and senior years and became a member of the 100-point club his sophomore season.

Schreyer was the head coach of the Crystal Springs Sandpipers from 2002-2004, where he guided the team to three undefeated seasons. He is also an assistant coach for the Pioneer Aquatic Club where he is responsible for swimmers ages 12-14. He is on schedule to graduate in January 2006 with a B.S. in Environmental Science with a minor in Biology.

10 2005-06 SWIMMING & DIVING KRISTIN CLEGG’S ACHIEVEMENTS

Kristin Clegg

Kristin Clegg came to William Paterson as a precocious freshman intent on becoming one of the most memorable student-athletes to ever gracefully glide through the waters at Wightman Gym. Through her first three seasons, there is little doubt she has established herself as one of the most extraordinary competitors in the Pioneers’ proud swimming and diving history.

Clegg enters the 2005-06 season as a six-time All-American after a stellar 2004-05 campaign. This added to her accomplishments in the water, as she finished seventh at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in the 100-yard backstroke and 14th in the 200- yard backstroke to earn All-America honors in both events. In 2003, Clegg placed 16th in the 200 backstroke. The Top 16 swimmers at the national meet earn All-America honors.

Also, Clegg was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer after winning the 100 and 200 backstroke at the Metropolitan Conference Championships last March. She set school records while winning both events and shattered the previous conference standard in the 200.

The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) cited her as an Academic All-American in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In addition, she helped the women’s team earn Academic All-America honors each of the past three seasons.

Only Laurie Gazdalski (nine times, 1991-95) has been honored more times among Pioneer women’s swimmers as an All-American.

“I watched Kristin compete and coached her at the youth level, so I knew she would be special once she got to William Paterson University,” head coach Ed Gurka said. “Kristin has a sense of commitment and passion for her sport that separates her from others. She has really honed her skills since joining our program and has helped elevate the level of competion among our swimmers. As great as she has been her first three years, I am very glad we have her for another season.”
