2 2005-06 MEN’S BASKETBALL 2005-06 PREVIEW

Something clicked for Luis Martinez over the final seven games of the 2004-05 season. Always a solid player, the multi- talented 6-foot-5, 230-pound forward paced William Paterson in scoring over four of the team’s final games.

Martinez was not alone when it came to strong late-season efforts. Sophomore guards Jason Cameron and Joey Spiegel were among those who exhibited tremendous promise for the Pioneers (15- 10, 6-10 NJAC) last winter – and among those who will be counted upon to help William Paterson contend for a spot in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tourna- ment.

“We’re going to rely on the maturation and development of players from last year,” said 11th-year head coach Jose Rebimbas said. “We feel that Joey Spiegel, Luis Martinez and Jason Cameron have worked extremely hard to get to a point where they will be major contributors. Those three gentlemen have improved and because of their experi- ences last year, I feel they are ready to lead us this season.”

Spiegel (4.7 ppg) and Cameron saw significant action in the late stages of last season. Spiegel is a heady player who looks for his shot, which is good since Rebimbas favors scoring point guards. Although the 5-foot-11 Spiegel is the favorite to run the show, look for 5-8 sophomore Tyreek Rolon, a transfer from County College of Morris, to also see significant action.

At the off-guard spot, the 6-3 Cameron (2.4 ppg) is a solid long-range shooter who passes, rebounds and defends well. Senior Kelvin DeLosAngeles (6-3, 190; 5.4 ppg, 51.9 FG%, 43.2 3-point FG%) possesses the same qualities and will play meaningful minutes. Backing them up will be junior returnee Jon Torbick (5-10, 180), freshman Tim Lucas (6-3, 190; Old Bridge High School) and junior Jeff Palmer (6-3, 190) .

2005-06 MEN’S BASKETBALL 3 2005-06 PREVIEW/ CBSA GUIDE TOP 25

Martinez (9.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 52.9 FG%) will anchor the frontcourt after a breakthrough sophomore season that saw him rank second on the team in scoring. He will present matchup problems with his ability to knock down perimeter shots in addition to his low-post game. Depending on how big or small the Pioneers play, he could see action at any of the frontcourt spots although most of his minutes should come on the wing. At small forward, 6-3 senior Mario Rivero (5.3 ppg) is one of the elite on-ball defenders in the NJAC and will be looked upon to shut down the opponent’s top scorer, while his mid-range game makes him a viable offensive weapon. Junior Samir Sanu (3.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg) is a solid offensive threat.

Four players will vie for time as the Pioneers’ “big” forwards, as the team does not have a true center. Senior Nick Torres (6.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg) is the biggest (6-7, 230) most experienced of the bunch. A rugged rebounder, Torres’ improved offensive play around the basket and on mid-range jumpers make him the team’s top low-post option. Senior Larry Press (6-6, 240), who played for the Pioneers in 2001-02, is a solid inside-outside threat, while sophomores Larry Leverett (6-5, 225) and Patrick Reed (6-6, 230) will add inside muscle.

PIONEERS RANK AMONG CBSA GUIDE’S TOP 25 PROGRAMS IN DIVISION III

William Paterson University was ranked as one of the Top 25 NCAA Division III men’s basketball programs by the College Bound Student Athlete (CBSA) guide on its Web site, www.cbsaguide.com.

Programs cited needed to have a winning record of .625 or better over the past eight seasons in addition to having the same head coach in place for at least the last four years. These programs were also evaluated on the basis of information culled from web sites, media guides and NCAA record books while also using a focus group of 10 high school senior recruits to find out what is most important to potential college student-athletes.

“We have been very fortunate to recruit and get outstanding student-athletes to be a part of this winning tradition,” head coach Jose Rebimbas said. “We stress that the game be played the right way: hard, unselfish and defensive-minded. I believe that this accolade will open doors for future William Paterson University basketball players.”

Over the past eight seasons, the Pioneers have won at least 15 games each year and have recorded a composite record of 152-72, good for a .679 winning percentage. During that stretch, they have played for the NCAA Division III national championship (2001), made two Final Four appearances (1999 and 2001), earned five invitations (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002) and captured three New Jersey Athletic Conference championships (2000, 2001, 2002).

A glance through the annals of William Paterson men’s basketball THROUGH THE history reveals that many of the firsts YEARS and bests the Pioneers have accomplished have occurred with Year Record (NJAC) Rebimbas on the program’s sideline. 2004-05 15-10 (6-10) Among them: 2003-04 16-11 (6-7) 2002-03 19-7 (13-5) * The first two trips to the Final Four 2001-02@# 19-10 (12-6) (1999 and 2001), including the only 2000-01@% 26-5 (15-3) NCAA Division III national title game 1999-00@% 23-5 (15-3) appearance (2001). 1998-99# 19-12 (11-7) * The most wins in school history (26 1997-98 15-11 (10-8) in 2000-01). 1996-97^ 20-8 (12-6) * The fewest points per game 1995-96 12-12 (8-10) allowed (58.0 ppg in 2002-03, third OVERALL 198-99 (.667) in Division III). AT WPU 184-91 (.669) WPU IN NJAC 108-65 (.624) In all, 16 players or teams have become set records with Rebimbas @ NJAC Championship leading the way. Thus, it seems only # NCAA Division III Final Four fitting that Rebimbas is on the cusp % NCAA Division III Tournament of history himself this season. With Sweet 16 four victories, he will reach the 200- ^ NCAA Division III Tournament victory milestone. He enters the season ranked 38th among active coaches in winning percentage and 44th all-time in Division III.

With his philosophy of pushing the ball offensively and playing skin-tight defense, the Pioneers have averaged nearly 20 wins per season under Rebimbas, with their style of play mirroring their coach’s intensity. Defense is his specialty, as evidenced by the Pioneers ranking among the Top 10 in Division III the past three seasons in scoring defense: after setting the school record in 2002-03 (58.0 ppg, third nationally), they ranked eighth in 2003-04 (59.3 ppg) and fourth a year ago (58.6 ppg). Over the past three campaigns, they have held 48 opponents to 59 points or fewer.

In 2004-05, the Pioneers were fourth nationally in field-goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to a 37.1 percent conversion rate, the best in school history.

“We’re always going to play aggressive defense,” Rebimbas said. “We want to make life miserable for our opponents.”

6 2005-06 MEN’S BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF

Solving the Pioneers’ defense has often proved to be an arduous task for opponents, which explains how Rebimbas has helped his program hit some of its greatest heights. With him barking out instructions, William Paterson has won 20 games or more three times and 19 contests or more on five occasions. This includes five NCAA Division III postseason appearances, including four straight from 1999-2002, as well as three consecutive NJAC championships from 2000-02. The Pioneers’ success represented just the fourth time in conference history that a team won three straight league titles.

Offensively, Rebimbas loves scoring point guards and often gets his backcourt players to thrive in his system. The most notable example is Horace Jenkins, a three-time NJAC Player of the Year (1999-2001) who was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III Player of the Year in 2001. Jenkins played for the National Basketball Association’s Detroit Pistons in 2004-05, has starred in Italy and Greece and recently signed to play this season in Israel. Other standouts he has coached included 2002 All-American Rashaan Barner, who is playing for the Harlem Wizards, as well as 1,000-point scorers Ray Ortiz and Gerard Wilson.

A member of the 1989 Seton Hall University Final Four team, he began his coaching career as an assistant at Montclair State from 1991-94. He took over as the Red Hawks’ interim head coach for most of the 1994-95 season and led them to an NCAA Division III tournament appearance before turning William Paterson into one of the nation’s top Division III programs.

The organizer of the highly successful William Paterson boys basketball camp each summer at the Rec Center and the Wayne Boys Club, he resides in Warren with his wife, Lisa. They have two children: son JP, 5, and newborn daughter Melina.

Chapman has played a vital role in building William Paterson into a regional and national power since his arrival 11 seasons ago. His work on the recruiting trail and his rapport with student-athletes are two of his finest traits, while his ability to break down an opponent’s strategy has helped the Pioneers achieve some of the greatest successes in school history.

Prior to his time at William Paterson, Chapman was the head coach at Hudson County Prep from 1993-95. He also served as a varsity assistant coach at Don Bosco Prep from 1991-93.

2005-06 MEN’S BASKETBALL 7 COACHING STAFF

Also the athletic department’s academic coordinator, Chapman resides in Mahwah with his wife, Shannon, and their newborn baby girl, Bailey.

Griles brings extensive college and international experience to the Pioneer coaching staff and will be counted upon to scout upcoming opponents while also helping with recruiting. He was an assistant coach from 2001- 04 with the Puerto Rico Superior League’s Carolina Giants, where his primary duties included breaking down the Giants’ competition. Previ- ously, he was a player-coach with Yauco Cafeterios and the coach of the Barceloneta under 21 teams in 1998 in the Puerto Rico Superior League and coached Capitan Correa High School from 1996-98. ␣ Griles began his coaching career at Long Island University C.W. Post in 1989-90 after a standout four-year career (1984-87, 1988-89) that saw him set school records for free throws in a season (197 in 1988-89) and a career (446). He ranks fifth all-time with 1,323 points scored for the Pioneers, who went 92-26␣ during his career,␣ and was named the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year for 1988-89. He was selected as the MVP of the NYCAC Tournament in 1987 and 1989. ␣ A onetime star at Don Bosco Technical High School in Paterson, Griles teaches physical education at Memorial Hall, an alternative high school in Bloomfield. The Wayne resident is currently pursuing his Master’s in special education from Long Island University.

Even during his four-year career as a guard, Vieira was considered a coach in training. This season, he will assist with scouting, recruiting and tutoring the Pioneer backcourt. The Rutherford resident is scheduled to receive his B.S. in exercise and movement science in May.
