    FACT SHEET Produced Water: Oil and Gas Terminology Glossary What Is Produced Water? Produced water is water that comes out of the well with the crude oil during crude oil production. Produced water contains soluble and non-soluble oil/organics, suspended solids, dissolved solids, and various chemicals used in the production process. The ratio of produced water to oil varies from well to well and over the life of the well. Generally, this ratio is more than 3 and can be more than 20 in some parts of the world. Not only does the flowrate of the produced water change over time, but so does the composition. The composition of produced water also varies widely from well to well. Although oil and water are generally thought to not mix well, multiple separation steps are typically required to separate the two. The degree of produced water treatment depends on the site’s treatment requirements-typically deep well injection, reinjection, evaporation ponds, or surface water discharge. As regulations have become more stringent, disposal method costs increase, and water becomes more scarce, beneficial reuse is becoming a more viable option. Depending on the degree of chemical and mechanical emulsification, removal of oil and suspended solids from the water can be a treatment challenge. The American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity, a measure of oil density, varies by region (see Table 6, page 4), which affects the effectiveness of gravity separation methods. Produced water treatment is typically considered an upstream oil and gas (O&G) process. The treatment steps and many terms are unique to this process but common in the industry.

In this paper, anoxic gas flotation and solid accumulating flotation separators will be introduced. This method could benefit further decomposing the organics and increase methane formation.     SAGD Produced Water Treatment Oil & Gas Industry | Case Study Oilsands Producer Northern Alberta, Canada – This project featured produced water deoiling and evaporation systems as well as raw water treatment. All major process vessels were delivered fully built up and the balance of the system supplied as modules to the greatest extent possible. The Client’s Needs Water treatment and steam generation are critical to in situ oil production. An oil sands producer in Northern Alberta, developing a new central process facility, required that the water treatment system use water efficiently to meet operational and sustainability objectives. The system supplied would need to maximize reuse of the treated produced water and minimize waste generated while providing quality water to the boilers for steaming. The Solution Veolia Water Technologies was selected to supply the produced water system based on a unique, robust process that met the performance objectives of the central processing facility. The overall system consisted of deoling equipment and a produced water evaporation and crystallization system. Veolia was also contracted to provide raw water treatment comprised of ultrafiltration (UF), SAC Ion Exchange, and Reverse Osmosis (RO). This system will treat well water for startup activities and will be transitioned to providing utility water for non-steaming use for the rest of the plant after startup. This producer had strict requirements for the water treatment plant in order to meet the sustainability goals of the project. The system must achieve a recycle rate of at least 95% of the produced water treated from production. The solution must also include the utilization of a brackish underground water source as the majority supply of makeup water to the plant.

These technologies are deficient in the removal of dissolved hydrocarbons and dissolved heavy metal ions which have been identified as major contributors to the high environmental impact factor of produced water. The simultaneous removal of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) from produced water via photoelectrochemical process was identified in this work as a produced water treatment alternative with the potential to virtually eliminate the cost for chemical reagents and high energy input. Several grades of simulated produced water were synthesised and used to understand different parameters necessary for developing a successful photoelectrochemical treatment. The process demonstrated in this work followed a simple two–electrode photoelectrochemical cell where heavy metals were recovered on a platinum electrode with simultaneous degradation of PAH (phenanthrene) on a photoanode, with the aid of sunlight (simulated) and an applied cell voltage of 1.0 V. With increasing number of maturing reservoirs, global oil to water cut is in the ratio of 1:3. Treatment of produced water is essential due to its detrimental effects on the environment and marine life. Gas flotation is identified as effective secondary treatment method for treating produced water. Induced gas flotation is the widely used gas flotation method due to its low retention time and high separation effi- ciency. Synthetic produced water was prepared using three different crude oils. Ex- periments were carried out for gravity and gas flotation by varying different brine solutions, pH, mixing speed and initial oil concentrations. Influence of parame- ters like bubble sizes and type of gas used for flotation was also conducted for gas flotation. The objective of the thesis is to identify major influential param- eters affecting the separation process. Droplet sizes were measured before and after separation process using gravity or gas flotation methods. Oil removal effi- ciency for the samples were calculated and the influence of the parameters were discussed in detail. It was found that the oil removal efficiency of gravity separa- tion and gas flotation ranged from, 29-65% and 54-96% respectively. The type of crude used was identified as the major influencing factor for separation.
