Friday 8 th May

Dear Aslan Class

Today is VE Day (Victory in Europe Day). It is the 75 year anniversary. You may have already heard of ideas of how people are going to celebrate this during lockdown.

As today is a bank holiday, this will be a choice as to whether you would like to take part or not.

On Learners Pool > Aslan> WW2 > VE day, there is a PowerPoint with a link to a video to tell you more about VE day. As well as some music links to listen to songs that people would have enjoyed during WW2 as well as some suggested activities for you.

There are also things being broadcast on TV, which you may find interesting to watch:

 11am | BBC One | The Nation Remembers BBC One will lead a poignant two-minute silence to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.  2.45pm | BBC One | The Announcement of Victory Winston Churchill’s historic speech will also be broadcast – providing a fascinating insight into what the public will have heard on that significant day all those years ago.  8pm | BBC One | The People’s Celebration Viewers can also tune in to a special programme on VE Day on BBC One, which will see some of the UK’s biggest stars (Katherine Jenkins, ), sing a rendition of the iconic ‘We’ll Meet Again’, by Vera Lynn. Throughout the show, we will hear from the real stars of the night, the people who still remember that historic evening and can tell us what it was like, first hand.  9pm | BBC One | The Queen’s speech: The Queen herself will be giving a special address to the nation (her second during the coronavirus pandemic), at 9am on 8th May – which is the exact same time that her father, King George VI, spoke to the UK 75 years ago, on the actual VE Day.

Some of them are quite late, so you may wish to speak to your parents first. I also know lots of families are planning cake and tea to create their own party in the afternoon and make their own celebrations to commemorate the day.

If you want to record any of this – pictures, diary entry, copy of your poster (anything you like really), you could put it in your topic books too as it fits so well with our topic. No pressure – only if you want to.

I hope you all have a lovely .

Miss Scott
