PASÓ UN MURCIÉLAGO 1 -Toas las enfermedaes se curan con yerbas y con rezos ... Una güena cataplasma de romero mezclá con cenizas de astillas de roble, cura la punta de costau pa sécula seculorum. Los celos se alivian con endrinas verdes, y las malas intenciones con unas rociás de agua bendita en el lau del corazón ... Crepitan los leños en el llar, bajo la caldera de cobre añejo. Por el bo­ querón de la tronera penetran las últimas luces del día. Suenan esquilas y silbidos en la cambera del monte. A la vera de las ascuas borbotean las pan­ zudas pucheras de barro bermejo, con adornos azules, con adornos verdes. Manzanea recibe la suave caricia de las últimas claridades. Van quedando solas las mieses y las brañas, los agreos y los huertos. Hay lumbres en el cielo por la parte de Asturias. El sol traspone la collada y en la llanura can­ tan las rigueras, bajo los puentes de madera y retamas que en los días turbios arrastrarán las aguas de nieve. Tío Anselmo nos mira sonriente. Viste blusa azul sobre el elástico pardo. Tiene los dientes sarrosos, como las cadenas que cuelgan sobre la pusiega ahumada. Sentados en un escaño duro de "cajiga apeñascada" y correosa, es­ cuchamos la voz del viejo pícaro, como el acento cascado de la tradición, que lo mismo desciende a los abismos que se encarama a las cumbres. Voz de los siglos y de las edades ; de las cavernas y de los palacios; de las manse­ dumbres y de las tempestades; de las mazmorras y de los j ardin es; de los vientos y de las aguas; de la nieve y del fuego. Voz del amor y de las pe­ nas; del arnés y la almena; del claustro y de la guerra; del remanso y del - 503 estruendo; del infierno y las estrellas ... Tradiciones de las blancas hechice­ ras, de las miserias que lloran, de los hartazgos que cantan ... 11 Tío Anselmo es curandero. Ha llenado las alforjas de yerbas y de raíces, de flores y manzanillas. Sartas de ajos colgaron de su cuello y hojas verdes y mustias colmaron sus bolsillos ... -Mi madre me enseñó estas habilidades. Los secretos jueron pa mí más claros que el agua limpia del ríu. Tantu cerner y cerner, el ceazu bailó solu, como una peonza de las más escarabitas. Y así aprendí que la envidia se cura con escajos machacaos y la melanconía de las mozas con co·rtezas de limón y vinu vieju. También aprendí que las leluras de las solteronas se aplacan con unas friegas de hojas de acebu en el mesmu espinazu y agua fría en la cabeza ... No hay mejor cosa pa las chiflaúras de los viejos muy reviejos, que los jormigos y güenos vasos de vinu dulce ... Ha llegado la noche. Ya están las yuntas en los establos y las ovejas en los rediles. En las rigueras codean las ranas. Una nuética grazna en la so­ carreña desmantelada. -El reúma se cura con untu de osa y las descalabraúras con cebolla po­ dría. El mejor remediu pal dolor de muelas es el cardenillu de los ochavos viejos con agua hirviendo ... 11 I -Sí, señor; hay brujas negras vestías de blancu, que se apaecen en los caminos. Me lo dijo tíu Anselmo el curanderu de Manzanea. Tienen los ojos coloraos y las pestañas de la color de la ceniza. Vuelan como los milanos y a la media noche bailan en los collaos. Los mozos que quieren que claque moza se enamore de ellos, no tienen más que salir al correor y decir cuarenta veces seguías esta mesma jaculatoria: "Bruja, brujona de la güena suerte, jaz que la moza me tenga un cariñu mu juerte" .... A los siete días, justos y cabales, a la media noche, se quema una rama seca de laurel debajo de un nogal de los más delgaos. Y la moza, por mu fantasiosa que sea, se jaz mimosa y zalamera pal que vaiga a rondala como Dios manda. Me lo dijo tíu Anselmo el curanderu de Manzanea. Y así pienso en casame yo con una moza de Urbina, maja y tresná como un lucero. Si a la primera dame calabazas, diré la jaculatoria de las brujas negras del hábitu blancu ... Mesio es un mozo cabal. Lo mismo repica las campanas que "tira" las yerbas estivales, o hace una estirpia, o maneja una azuela. Alto, coloradote, 504 - recio y alegre, hilandero de todas las cocinas, caporal de marzas, luchador de antruido,. sorbe los vientos por unos ojos negros y una chambra galana. A la vera de los figones, entre el cascabeleo de las panderetas y el pre­ gón de los buhoneros sintió henchírsele el alma de amores y de ansias. Desde aquel punto y hora, pensó menos en los labarientos de la mies y de la pra­ dera. Agonizaba la naturalísima avaricia del labriego, para abrir de par en par las puertas del corazón a los mensajes y a las mieles del amor. La in­ quietud de las sequías, de las lumbres que abrasan, de las aguas turbias que sacuden y golpean, rebramando, se trocó en un desasosiego más profundo, más grato, mezcla de espinas y de rosales, de penumbras y resplandores. Asiose el mozo con todas las fuerzas a aquel anhelo dulcísimo que le retozó en la sangre y le respingó en el espíritu. Cantó con más brío en la ronda. Fueron más recios y retorneados los ijujús estridentes. Los ojos negros y la chambra blanca, traíanle desasosegado y cautivo. Sentí escozores de escajos, caricias de linfas puras, tibiezas inefables; alientos de ambrosías y de romeros. La pesadumbre y el optimismo luchaban a brazo partido en el corazón y en el cerebro. Nieves y resoles, albas de primavera, luceros y tinieblas, huertos florecidos, lindes quemadas. Que tal es el amor cuando nos tiene a su mer­ ced ... IV - No me quier, señor ... No me quier. La fantasía la engurruña el senti­ mientu. Peñas y granizos tien en las mesmas entrañas. Riose de las mis pa­ labras. Yo esperaba las flores y los claveles y diome un manoju de cardos. Bien haigan las brujas del hábitu blancu. He de quemar la rama del laurel debajo del nogal pa ver si me quier, pa ver si me mira. He de rezar la ja­ cultario con toa la devoción. Bien haiga tíu Anselmo el santu curanderu ... V "Bruja, brujona de la güena suerte". Cuarenta veces seguidas, a la media noche. Bajo los ramos de panojas doradas suena la jaculatoria con vehemen­ cias de rezo místico. Hay lumbres en los montes y luciérnagas en los escaja­ les. Grazna la nuética en la socarreña desmantelada. "Bruja, brujona de la güena suerte". La voz tiene temblores y devocio­ nes. Parece que llora, parece que canta. La superstición atávica se cierne so­ bre el corredor como las alas de un inmenso cárabo. Las brujas deben estar danzando en el otero, más arriba de las lumbres que hacen crepitar a las pobres retamas. - 505 "Que la moza me tenga un cariñu mu juerte". A lo lejos se oye la última copla de la mocedad andariega. El ábrego zarandea los árboles y se mete por postigos y troneras. VI Han pasado los siete días. Comienzan a caer las hojas amarillas. Bajo los cielos grises rezongan las canales y guitonean las fuentes. -No valió la jaculatoria de las brujas del hábitu blancu. La mala suerte que tengo metía en los tuétanos. Al cabu de los días he caíu en la cuenta de que no tien remediu el mi mal. Cuando dije el rezu chiflaban los sapos, pasó un murcilélagu por delante del balcón y ninguna nube tapó a la luna. Y así no val la jaculatoria. Me lo dijo tíu Anselmo el curanderu ... Pa que valga no tien que oíse el chiflar de los sapos, ni volar ningún murciélago, y la luna tien que estar escondía entre nubes. ¡Tengo una pena aquí adrento ! .. Por la moza que me aborrez y por los güenos cuartos que di al curanderu ! Y lo peor es que la jaculatoria no pue rezarse otra vez. Si se repite se queda unu mudu pa toa la vida. Adivina el porvenir; cura con fierabrás y cantueso las descalabraduras. Adormece los celos, alivia las pesadumbres; sabe rezos mis- 506 - teriosos y signos secretos para las doncellas que quieren casar. Las gentes han vaciado sus faltriqueras para hacer rica a "La Sabia" ... Los vivos -hipócritas o desvergonzados- se calientan a la lumbre que encienden los tontos. Característica de todos los siglos, de todos los pueblos, de todas las razas.

"In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva­ tion.

Guy and I published a bibliography of sexuality studies on Latin America in our edited book Sex and Sexuality in Latin America (New York University Press, 1997), including studies in a wide variety of fields. This bibliography was updated for the Spanish edition of that book, Sexo y sexualidades en América Latina (Paidos, Buenos Aires, 1998); that version included a number of items that had come to our attention after we turned in the book to NYU. Interestingly, the number of publications in Latin America (and in Spanish and Portuguese) increased in that brief period, and continues to increase. This study used a complete randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 4 replications namely P0: control, P1: 3% durian, P2: 6% durian, P3: 9% durian and G0: control, G1: 10% gerga orange fruit juice, G2 : 15% gerga orange fruit juice, G3: 20% gerga orange fruit juice. Variables measured included yield, density and organoleptic characteristics including color, aroma, taste, texture and tenderness. Organoleptic test showed that addition of durian fruit meat affect the texture and tenderness which showed significant differences (P <0.05); but had no significant effect (P> 0.05) on color, aroma, and taste. Addition of gerga orange fruit juice also had no significant difference (P> 0.05) organoleptic characteristic being tested.
