Scholarship on Roth has expanded in both range and complexity over recent years, propelled in large part by the critical esteem surrounding his major fiction of the 1990s. But comprehensive studies of Roth’s development rarely stray beyond certain prominent subjects, homing in on the author’s complicated meditations on Jewish identity, a perceived predilection for postmodern experimentation, and, more recently, his meditations on the powerful claims of the American nation. This study argues that a preoccupation with the efficacies of fiction—probing its epistemological purchase, questioning its autonomy, and examining the shaping force of its contexts of production and circulation— roots each of Roth’s major phases and drives various innovations in his approach. -
Alice Walker's the Color Purple
Alice Walker's The Color Purple RUTH EL SAFFAR, University of Illinois Alice Walker's The Color Purple (1982) is the work that has made a writer who has published consistently good writing over the past decade and a half into some thing resembling a national treasure. Earlier works, like her collection of short stories, In Love and Trouble (1973), and her poems, collected under the title Revo lutionary Petunias and Other Poems (1973), have won awards.' And there are other novels, short stories, poems, and essays that have attracted critical attention.2 But with The Color Purple, which won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, Alice Walker has made it onto everyone's reading list, bringing into our consciousness with clarity and power the long-submerged voice of a black woman raised southern and poor. Although Celie, the novel's principal narrator/character, speaks initially from a deeply regional and isolated perspective, both she and the novel ultimately achieve a vision which escapes the limitations of time and space. The Color Purple is a novel that explores the process by which one discovers one's essential value, and learns to claim one's own birthright. It is about the magical recovery of truth that a world caught in lies has all but obscured. Shug Avery, the high-living, self-affirming spirit through whom the transfor mation of the principal narrator/character takes place reveals the secret at a crucial point: "God is inside you and inside everybody else. You come into the world with God. But only them that search for it inside find it. -

Butler claims that Foucault’s introductory essay to Herculine Barbin is somewhat inconsistent with his theoretical standpoint on sex and sexuality. While appreciating his construc- tionist approach, she doubts that Foucault ever succeeds in getting rid of a utopian vision of sexual- ity. However, her discussion seems to face another theoretical deadlock because of her insistence on law and desire. With much stress on the impossibility of love of Alexina, her own reading ends up with some fatalism under the law of prohibition. On the other hand, Foucault reads the memoirs as a record of encounter of an otherwise anonymous person with the emerging modern apparatus of power. Re-reading his essay in this line, we can find a way of thinking that is neither an idealistic identity-free body nor a fatalistic subject of desire. -

eSharp Issue 16: Politics and Aesthetics Medical histories, queer futures: Imaging and imagining ‘abnormal’ corporealities Hilary Malatino Once upon a time, queer bodies weren’t pathologized. Once upon a time, queer genitals weren’t surgically corrected. Once upon a time, in lands both near and far off, queers weren’t sent to physicians and therapists for being queer – that is, neither for purposes of erotic reform, gender assignment, nor in order to gain access to hormonal supplements and surgical technologies. Importantly, when measures to pathologize queerness arose in the 19th century, they did not respect the now-sedimented lines that distinguish queernesses pertaining to sexual practice from those of gender identification, corporeal modification, or bodily abnormality. These distinguishing lines – which today constitute the intelligibility of mainstream LGBT political projects – simply did not pertain. The current typological separation of lesbian and gay concerns from those of trans, intersex, and genderqueer folks aids in maintaining the hegemony of homonormative political endeavors. For those of us interested in forging coalitions that are attentive to the concerns of minoritized queer subjects, rethinking the pre-history of these queer typologies is a necessity. This paper is an effort at this rethinking, one particularly focused on the conceptual centrality of intersexuality to the development of contemporary intelligibilities of queerness. It is necessary to give some sort of shape to this foregone moment. It exists prior to the sedimentation of modern Western medical discourse and practice. May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

names, Vol. 58 No. 3, September, 2010, 139–49 Names in Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead and Home Susan Petit Emeritus, College of San Mateo, California, USA The titles of Marilynne Robinson’s complementary novels Gilead (2004) and Home (2008) and the names of their characters are rich in allusions, many of them to the Bible and American history, making this tale of two Iowa families in 1956 into an exploration of American religion with particular reference to Christianity and civil rights. The books’ titles suggest healing and comfort but also loss and defeat. Who does the naming, what the name is, and how the person who is named accepts or rejects the name reveal the sometimes difficult relationships among these characters. The names also reinforce the books’ endorsement of a humanistic Christianity and a recommitment to racial equality. keywords Bible, American history, slavery, civil rights, American literature Names are an important source of meaning in Marilynne Robinson’s prize-winning novels Gilead (2004) and Home (2008),1 which concern the lives of two families in the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa,2 in the summer of 1956. Gilead is narrated by the Reverend John Ames, at least the third Congregationalist minister of that name in his family, in the form of a letter he hopes his small son will read after he grows up, while in Home events are recounted in free indirect discourse through the eyes of Glory Boughton, the youngest child of Ames’ lifelong friend, Robert Boughton, a retired Presbyterian minister. Both Ames, who turns seventy-seven3 that summer (2004: 233), and Glory, who is thirty-eight, also reflect on the past and its influence on the present. -

Film Review XXY Offers a New View of Life in an Intersex Body XXY (Film Movement 2008) Directed by Lucía Puenzo; written (in Spanish, with English subtitles) by Lucía Puenzo, based on a short story by Sergio Bizzio. Running time: 1 hour 31 minutes. Not rated. Reviewed by Anne Tamar-Mattis† I was ready to hate XXY,1 the much-lauded film by Argentinean filmmaker Lucía Puenzo. The film is a fictional account of the coming-of-age of Alex (Inés Efron), an intersex adolescent living in a remote coastal village in Uruguay. In general, I approach fictional and mainstream media representations of intersex people with some trepidation. Too often, these stories drip with a romanticized view of what it means to be intersex: the intersex person as a tragic, isolated figure,2 as an idealized blend of male and female,3 or as an exotic and objectified specimen.4 Such facile depictions make me wince, in part because I happen to know and care about more than a few intersex people. Through my life partner, openly intersex activist and physician Suegee Tamar-Mattis, and more recently through my work as director of a national legal project serving the needs of children with intersex conditions, I have come to know intersex people of many ages and experiences from around the world.
