Visible illustrations are so highly esteemed among educationalists of the present day, that the announce- ment that a greatly improved form of Magic Lantern has made its appearance is very favorably received. Between a desire for such an instrument, and the lack of definite information concerning it, many very natu- rally manifest both their interest and their caution by searching letters of inquiry. The inventor has en- deavored, in hasty epistles, to state all the possibilities and impossibilities of the Sciopticon, and of lights, lenses, lantern slides, and tanks; but he finds it increasingly difficult to give each correspondent, individually, a full philosophical exposition. For such, therefore as desire a more detailed account than can be given in a hasty letter, or than is contained in the circular, which it is always a pleasure to forward on application, a Sciopticon Manual has been prepared, to serve as a guide-book to ; IV PREFACE. the various interesting portions of the Magic Lantern field in general, as well as to the Sciopticon in particular. It treats of the Optical Image—without a lens, with a lens, in the camera obscura, in the eye, in the photo- graphic camera, and on the screen of peculiarities ; the of lenses, and the corrections required lenses by ; of the peculiarities of the Sciopticon, and its construction and of dissolving management ; views, phantasmagoria, and the ghost of lantern slides in all their variety of photo- ; ; graphing slides by the wet-plate process, by the dry-plate process, by Marcy's Photographic Printing Apparatus, by the Sciopticon, and other processes of how to paint ; slides, and of how to perform chemical experiments, &c. to which is appended a catalogue, arranged to assist purchasers in making satisfactory selections. Thus this Manual may take the place of private cor- respondence to a considerable extent, allowing in let- ters more space for business, and for an interchange of new ideas, with a view of making the Manual in subse- quent editions more interesting, and the Sciopticon more useful. It was at first my intention to give space to the sub- ject of chemical lights, but reflecting that in this direc- tion there is no lack of printed matter, and that the in- terest felt in the Sciopticon is owing mainly to its giving PREFACE. V good results with little trouble, I have concluded to omit the gas which would increase the bulk of the Manual, , without a corresponding addition to its usefulness. The Sciopticon (pronounced Si-op-ti-con), is by far the most convenient and easily managed of any form of Magic Lantern. Its ridge of wide, intensified double flame, lying lengthwise in the axis of the condensing lenses, gives it much greater efficiency than any other lamp-illuminated lantern. All who have become acquainted with this new in- strument, see in it the accomplishment of what has long been greatly desired by those who appreciate the value of visible illustrations as a means of imparting instruc- tion and of affording rational amusement. Confessedly, the medieval magicians with their lan- terne magique effected little good by their incantations and ghostly spectres. But modern educators have higher aims and better means at hand. Their lenses are greatly improved in form and quality. The pho- tographer secures images of all that is interesting or (xi) Xll INTRODUCTION. beautiful in nature and art. Literature and the sciences teem with pictorial illustrations, from which choice se- lections can be easily copied for lantern slides. And now the Sciopticon, with its own peculiar light for all ordinary occasions, and with the oxy-hydrogen light for occasions extraordinary, comes in to show up what is thus made ready. In form and construction the Sciopticon is very unlike that relic of the middle ages, the old magic lantern. Those who are interested in the philosophy involved in it, in the peculiarities pertaining to it, in the practical management of it, in making and selecting slides for it, in performing scientific experiments with it, and in pro- moting the interest of education by it—will do well to inquire within. SCIOPTICON MANUAL. CHAPTER I. THE CAMERA OBSCURA. A picture formed by rays of light from the several parts of an object as seen at A (Fig. 1), is called an image ; and the cham- ber in which it is formed, and from which all light is ex- cluded, except what • enters a small hole as at /S, is called a camera obscura. This dark chamber claims attention here because its properties, which arc common to the eye, the Sciopticon, and all forms of the camera, are seen on a broad scale, and may be readily verified by inexpensive experiments.

The chapter draws on recent and successful experiences by French animation producers on global cultural markets. Indeed, in order to achieve a global reach on children’s cultural markets, the managerial stakes that producers have to face include making decisions that take into account the competitive positioning of their clients (TV channels or cable broadcasters, internet service providers or web portals), and their programming choices.     Lighting Efficiency CLIMATE TECHBOOK Quick Facts Lighting accounts for about 11 percent of energy use in residential buildings and 18 percent in commercial buildings. Both conserving lighting use and adopting more efficient technologies can yield substantial energy savings. Some of these technologies and practices have no up-front cost at all, and others pay for themselves over time in the form of lower utility bills. In addition to helping reduce energy use, and therefore greenhouse gas emissions, other benefits may include better reading and working conditions and reduced light pollution. New lighting technologies are many times more efficient than traditional technologies such as incandescent bulbs, and switching to newer technologies can result in substantial net energy use reduction, and associated reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. A 2008 study for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) revealed that using light emitting diodes (LEDs) for niche purposes in which it is currently feasible would save enough electricity to equal the output of 27 coal power plants. Background Nearly all of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the residential and commercial sectors can be attributed to energy use in buildings (see CLIMATE TECHBOOK: Residential and Commercial Sectors Overview). Embodied energy – which goes into the materials, transportation, and labor used to construct the building – makes up the next largest portion. Even so, existing technology and practices can be used to make both new and existing buildings significantly more efficient in their energy use, and can even be used in the design of net zero energy buildings—buildings that use design and efficiency measures to reduce energy needs dramatically and rely on renewable energy sources to meet remaining demand.

    Deverberie Gilt Bronze Antique Mantel Clock “The Magic Lantern”, Empire period Case Attributed to Jean-Simon Deverberie (1764 - 1824) Paris, Empire period, circa 1800 Height 46 cm, width 24 cm, depth 13 cm An extremely fine gilt bronze mantle clock of eight-day duration, the white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals and gilt bronze hands for the hours and minutes. The movement, with lever escapement and silk thread suspension, strikes the hour and half hour, with outside count wheel. The case, in the form of a magic lantern, has a beaded bezel and is decorated with blue enamel rosettes; it is surmounted by a flaming torch pierced with stars and hearts. The pendulum bob is formed as a butterfly. The magic lantern is carried on the back of a striding Cupid with enamel eyes who carries a quiver of arrows and a bow. He stands on an oval plinth, featuring a cast frieze with winged putti playing around a central vase, is raised on feathered eagle’s claw feet.     Phantasmagoria: Ghostly entertainment of the Victorian Britain Yurie Nakane / Tsuda College / Tokyo / Japan Abstract Phantasmagoria is an early projection show using an optical instrument called a magic lantern. Brought to Britain from France in 1801, it amused spectators by summoning the spirits of ab- sent people, including both the dead and the living. Its form gradually changed into educational amusement after it came to Britain. However, with the advent of spiritualism, its mysterious na- ture was re-discovered in the form of what was called ‘Pepper’s Ghost’. Phantasmagoria was reborn in Britain as a purely ghostly entertainment, dealing only with spirits of the dead, be- cause of the mixture of the two notions brought from France and the United States. This paper aims to shed light on the role that phantasmagoria played in Britain during the Victorian period, how it changed, and why. Through observing the transnational history of this particular form of entertainment, we can reveal a new relationship between the representations of science and superstitions. Handling lights was considered a deed conspiring with magic or witchcraft until the sixteenth century, owing to its sanctified appearance; thus, some performers were put in danger of persecution. At that time, most people, including aristocrats, were not scientifically educated, because science itself was in an early stage of development. However, the flourishing thought of the Enlightenment in the eighteenth century altered the situation. Entering the age of reason, people gradually came to regard illusions as worthy of scientific examination.
