CURA Leadership and Governance in Nunavut and Nunavik Newsletter # 3 Leadership and Governance CURA in Nunavut and Nunavik Life Story 1 2010 Arnait Nipingit. Voices of Inuit Women in Leadership and Governance OBJECTIVES The common objective of Qulliit and the CIÉRA’s CURA project Inuit Leadership in Nunavut and Nunavik was to make important Inuit women role models better known to Inuit youth and the general public. Inuit women tend to have more success in school than Inuit men and therefore generally reach higher levels of education but they are much less represented in elected posi- tions. The Arnait Nipingit Leadership Summit and the book published on that occasion were important contributions to support and value women’s identity in Nunavut. It was also a call to young Inuit women to take the lead in public life and contribute directly to transform the current family crises. Whether an Arnait Nipingit advocate, policy maker, or cultural leader, each woman tells the story of her journey toward becoming a voice for her fellow Inuit. Solid Voices of Inuit Women in Leadership and Governance cultural values and a strong sense of service are their common Voices of Inuit Women in Leadership and Governance denominators, even if their missions and personal convictions vary. Some are leaders in cultural development and environmentalism; others thrived as members of territorial legislatures. Some are advocates in their home communities; others took their passion for public issues to national and international arenas. In every case, these women are driven by a desire to see Inuit society flourish through its language, traditions, and institutions. M. et Mme Harris souhaitaient que leur don de la masse reste anonyme. Le premier ministre de l’époque a respecté leur désir, mais a demandé que leur legs puisse être reconnu ultérieurement au moyen d’une inscription gravée sur la masse. The year has certainly been a busy one. Like most years, it presented some challenges to Inuit women but we have also seen some significant successes. One gets a sense that we are making progress in a wide range of areas and that Inuit women are being recognized for their contributions to their communities. One development in particular, the renewed focus of the federal government on northern security and economic development, represents a major shift and offers some hope for the improvement of social and economic conditions in many Elisapee Sheutiapik Inuit communities. As I look back over the year, we have seen much positive change. We celebrated the implementation of self-government in Nunatsiavut and the negotiation of self-government in Nunavik. Inuit women have achieved a number of important positions including Leona Aglukkaq, the federal Minister of Health, and Eva Aariak, the Premier of Nunavut.

(PTE) Application dated 5 February 2018 for a Licence to Export Propane pursuant to Section 117 of the National Energy Board Act (Act) (Application) Notice of Application and Comment Period On 5 February 2018, the National Energy Board (NEB or Board) received an application from PTE for a licence to export up to 66,735,050 cubic metres or 419,750,117 barrels of propane, which includes a 15 per cent tolerance over a term of 25 years. On 21 February 2018, the Board received PTE’s response to a Board information request. The Board is of the view that the Application provided by PTE is now complete. The Board will consider the Application pursuant to section 118 of the Act, which reads: “On an application for a licence to export oil or gas, the Board shall satisfy itself that the quantity of oil or gas to be exported does not exceed the surplus remaining after due allowance has been made for the reasonably foreseeable requirements for use in Canada, having regard to the trends in the discovery of oil or gas in Canada.” The Board wishes to obtain the views of impacted persons that are relevant to the criteria in section 118 of the Act.

The Parents and Tots Association runs a free drop-in program for parents and children under the age of six three mornings a week. She noted that they are a volunteer, non-profit society. The association is seeking a one-time investment of one hundred thousand ($100,000.00) dollars to hire an executive director for one year to help expand and develop programming and to train and mentor a Program Manager Trainee who will continue to work for the organization in the future.
