Recorded via the Hauptwerk system. The Composer Marian Sawa was born January 12, 1937 in Krasnystaw, Poland and died April 27, 2005 in Warsaw. From 1951 to 1955, Sawa studied at the Salesian Organ School in Przemyšl. Feliks Rączkowski (1906–1989), who taught organ in Warsaw, was a graduate of the Salesian School and, on one of his return visits to Przemyšl, he was very impressed by the immense talent of one of the young students, Marian Sawa. Rączkowski invited Sawa to come to Warsaw for further study, and simply in order to teach him, Rączkowski joined the faculty at the Józef Elsner Secondary Music School. Upon Sawa’s graduation in 1958, he joined Rączkowski’s organ class at the F. Chopin Music Academy. From 1956 to 1966, Sawa was the organist of the garrison church (Field Cathedral of the Polish Army) in Warsaw. Sawa’s career as an educator focused primarily on his specialty of organ improvisation and began in 1966 at the Elsner School. -

Kolyada “The Genre System of Early Russian Hymnography: the Main Stages and Principles of Its Formation”.1 On the one hand the Glossary is an integral part of the article, therefore revealing and corroborating its principal conceptual propositions. However, on the other hand it can be used as an independent reference resource for hymnographical terminology, useful for the majority of Orthodox Churches worldwide that follow the Eastern Rite: Byzantine, Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian et al., as well as those Western Orthodox dioceses and parishes, where worship is conducted in English. The Glossary includes the main corpus of chants that represents the five great branches of the genealogical tree of the genre system of early Christian hymnography, together with their many offshoots. These branches are 1) psalms and derivative genres; 2) sticheron-troparion genres; 3) akathistos; 4) canon; 5) prayer genres (see the relevant tables, p. 298-299).2 Each entry includes information about the etymology of the term, a short definition, typological features and a basic statement about the place of a particular chant in the daily and yearly cycles of services in the Byzantine rite.3 All this may help anyone who is involved in the worship or is simply interested in Orthodox liturgiology to understand more fully specific chanting material, as well as the general hymnographic repertoire of each service. -

Welcome to the season after Pentecost at Trinity Church We are so glad you are here to pray with us today. This booklet will be your guide for Sunday worship here through the summer. We are now in the longest liturgical season of the year: the time of the formation of the church. Having walked and prayed and sung—through the Advent of Jesus, the Epiphany manifestations of God in Christ, the penitential pilgrimage of preparation in Lent, the intensity of the Passion in Holy Week, and the joyous season of the mystery of the resurrection in Eastertide—we come now to the time where we, the Lord’s people, are learning to be the body of Christ. At Trinity, we mark the liturgical seasons with predictable variations. For the summer, the congregation and summer choirs will speak the psalms and sing the Sanctus, Lord’s Prayer, and Agnus Dei (which can be found on the back cover) together. And always, please sing the hymns with courage! You’ll find the psalms on the scripture insert, handed out each Sunday. The hymns are found in the blue Hymnal. Please stand and sing for all hymns. The prayer for the Eucharist is found in the Book of Common Prayer. The order of service and music selections for each Sunday may be found on the page for the day. This booklet is designed to be reused each week. Please leave it in the pew as you depart. BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music. -

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Richmond, Texas Acolyte and Chalice Bearer Instructions Ministry Description Thank you for answering the call to serve as a crucifer, torchbearer, gospel bearer, and/or chalice bearer in our parish. Every one of these ministries serves an important purpose in our worship at St. Mark’s. Our parish life and all ministries of our parish are shaped and transformed by our worship. Thus, the rector and people of St. Mark’s thank you for your part in glorifying God through our worship. Below are the definitions of the aforementioned ministries specific to the typical Sunday service at St. Mark’s, Richmond: Crucifer – the minister who carries the cross at the properly appointed times and assists the celebrant in setting the table at the Eucharist. In our parish, the crucifer also bears the first chalice during the time of communion. Torchbearer – the minister who lights the candles before the service, carries the torches at the properly appointed times and extinguishes the candles after the service Gospel Bearer – the minister who carries the gospel book at the properly appointed times. In our parish, the gospel bearer also bears the second chalice during the time of communion. Each of these ministries requires responsibility not only on the Sunday you serve but also in the event that you cannot serve on the day you are scheduled. You are responsible for finding a substitute from the attached list of available ministers. After finding a substitute, you need to notify the office of the change no later than the Wednesday prior to the service at which you were originally scheduled to serve. -
