You can hardly browse the Internet without seeing this term and other positive descriptions about our great city. National publications and our local media are singing the same tune: Buffalo is back in business and poised to stay there. This is a gleaming, hopeful time, with the waterfront, downtown, commercial and industrial areas, recreational havens, and neighborhoods reborn, repurposed, and growing. It rings true that Buffalo is rising, in no small part, because of its young people. And because of the conviction of so many in our community that access to education is an essential building block for a true Renaissance. Educational opportunities lead to more opportunities for professional success, and that translates into safer neighborhoods and stronger regional economies. Buffalo Prep has shared in, and contributed to, the excitement and growth being experienced. Our 25th Anniversary Initiative and Prep for Tomorrow capital campaign were endorsed by the community and successful. Since our founding, thousands of talented students from underserved and marginalized populations have received the academic opportunity and enrichment from Buffalo Prep and its partner schools that prepared them for high school, college, and beyond. We have nurtured their inherent talents and potential with the tools for achievement and success which creates an equipped workforce and engaged community participants. There are remarkable Buffalo Prep alumni on our board of directors, on our staff and faculty, and in roles across every sector of our resurging city and region. While there are many success stories, there is still much work to be done. It is an honor to do this work and Buffalo Prep could not have the impact that it does without your support in the many ways that you show it. Thank you for being dynamic and dedicated partners in Buffalo Prep’s important mission and advocates for these deserving scholars. An investment and belief in our children is an investment and belief in our collective future. Mary Ann Coulson, Board President, 2017 Patti Stephen, Executive Director In 1989, Buffalo Prep was founded and located in Diefendorf Annex on the University at Buffalo’s South Campus. A small group of dedicated teachers mentored 10 students for academic success in high school and beyond. Today, more than 28 years later, Buffalo Prep operates out of Acheson Annex and provides academic, social, and cultural enrichment to over 500 college-bound students throughout its summer, after-school, and Saturday programs. We are excited that the University at Buffalo has affirmed its long-term commitment to Buffalo Prep through an investment in our continued growth by partnering with us to move Buffalo Prep to a new home on South Campus at Allen Hall. Buffalo Prep and co-chairs Jock and Betsy Mitchell launched Prep for Tomorrow, a capital campaign to cover the costs associated with the buildout of new state-of-the art classrooms, offices, technology and support services for our students. Buffalo Prep is excited to announce that we have surpassed the $1.5 million goal for Prep for Tomorrow! Allen Hall will provide the following: Nearly 6,000 square feet of state-of-the-art classrooms, science and computer labs, staff offices, restrooms, a kitchenette, and much needed storage space ADA-compliant building code updates, including a new elevator, to ensure handicap accessibility New technology, including fast internet connections, to give our scholars a competitive edge Approximately 5,000 square feet of additional space shared with UB, including a 150-seat auditorium, overflow classrooms for evening and summer programs, plus meeting rooms for community programming We thank the University at Buffalo for this opportunity and continued belief in our mission – and we thank the following Buffalo Prep supporters for their support of this important transition in our history. Dear Friends of Canisius College, I would like to present to you the members of the Class of 2019 that have submitted their resume to be included in our annual booklet of graduates. The Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration (HESAA) master’s program (formerly known as College Student Personnel Administration) at Canisius College is a full time cohort-based course of study that prepares graduates for careers in student affairs administration at both private and public institutions of higher education. The program is grounded in a theory-to-practice philosophy based in Jesuit pedagogy and student affairs professional competencies. Founded in 1996, the course of study consists of 36 credit hours taken over two academic years. The HESAA program combines the in-class education of graduate coursework, with the experiential learning of two required 225-hour internships to achieve its mission. Throughout their time in the program, students have been graduate assistants or worked professionally at Canisius and institutions across Western New York. Our students have had the unique opportunity to attend the NASPA national conference in March of 2018 and the ACPA annual convention in March of 2019 as part of their academic curriculum. These experiences only enhanced the student’s understanding of the importance of life-long professional development and the value of building networks and relationships. The HESAA students have progressed through the academic program together, taking all of their coursework as a cohesive group, thus developing strong team building skills and effective work groups. If you would like to learn more about our program, please visit canisius.edu/hesaa.

  • Better Choices for Buffalo's Students
Better Choices for Buffalo's Students: Expanding & Reforming the Criteria Schools System By Gary Orfield, Jennifer Ayscue, Jongyeon Ee, Erica Frankenberg, Genevieve Siegel-Hawley, Brian Woodward and Natasha Amlani A Report to Buffalo Public Schools May 2015 Acknowledgements The Civil Rights Project would like to acknowledge the many people who contributed to this important study. The collaboration of the Buffalo Public Schools staff was paramount, particularly Will Keresztes for making things happen, Eileen Bohen for her coordination, the school principals who spoke to us willingly and openly, Mark Frazier and staff who responded to our many requests for data, Maria Giardino for assisting Mr. Keresztes, and others who helped behind-the-scenes in Buffalo. On our research team, Natasha Amlani’s work was essential, and we want to thank her for the research she did. Our on-the-ground volunteers in Buffalo, Sara Asrat and Jenna Tomasello, worked tirelessly during the site visits, shepherded our researchers to many a meeting, organized and led survey field tests and provided overall indispensable support and consult. Pastor Pointer of the Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church provided space and recruited parents for one of our field tests. Other key collaborators in Buffalo were Rhonda Ried and staff at Cornerstone Research & Marketing for carrying out the survey work, and Caroline Taggart for sharing her suggestions on survey data collection. Thanks to Professor Mindy Kornhaber of the Pennsylvania State University who shared her expertise on testing. Laurie Russman worked miracles of coordination and communication, and Carolyn Peelle helped us as a perceptive and always-thoughtful editor.
