MAY 2012 I 1 Website Updates: New 2012 Rate Cards Online The new 2012-2013 DGA Rate Cards are now available online in the Contracts section of the DGA website (www.dga.org). The new rate cards incorporate the 1.75% wage increase for 2012 that was negotiated as part of the 2011 Basic Agreement (BA) and Freelance Live and Tape Television Agreement (FLTTA). Also taking effect on July 1, one-quarter-percent of compensation will now be diverted to the Health Plan as an additional Employer contribution. The 0.25% diversion is the result of a provision the DGA negotiated as part of the 2011 Basic Agreement to give it the fl exibility to help fortify the Health Plan. These rate cards are intended for general informational purposes. If you have a specifi c question, please call the DGA Contracts Department at (310) 289-2010.

4 I DGA MONTHLY Proper Staffi ng & Protecting the Jurisdiction of AD/UPM Work The Guild believes it is worthwhile to periodically remind members of the duties and responsibilities of each represented category to guard against the erosion of the DGA’s jurisdiction over covered work. In March the AD/UPM Council East sent a letter to all Eastern AD/UPM members to remind them of the importance of protecting the juridiction of DGA work via adherence to proper staffi ng. A synopsis of the information in that letter is below:

The minimum staffi ng terms of the DGA Basic Agreement (BA) were achieved, and remain protected, through tough bargaining by the Guild’s negotiation committees over several decades. photo by Jojo Whilden/CBS Broadcasting Inc. 2nd AD Marc Garland and 1st AD Rebecca Strickland The Guild is aware that some employers seek to assign both UPM and Assistant at work on the show Blue Bloods Director exclusive duties to persons not covered by a DGA agreement. Any such assignment of exclusive DGA duties to employees not covered by the BA is prohibited. It is up to each individual member to help ensure that the Guild signatory project on which he or she is working is properly staffed. Here are examples of what one should do to protect that jurisdiction: 1. As part of the prep period, all additional staffi ng needs should be considered and scheduled. It is very helpful to the production when these requests can be included as part of overall staffi ng and budget needs. 2. First ADs, besides making their own staffi ng requests, should consider and support the recommendations of their Second ADs. Second ADs need to request additional support when the scope of the work exceeds the capacity of

the existing staff. Disney Pictures photo by Chris Castaldi/Walt 1st AD Geoff Hansen and 2nd AD Christina Fong 3. Though it may be tempting to avoid asking for additional staff, members should on the set of National Treasure: Book of Secrets keep in mind that the BA requires the Employer to “not unreasonably withhold its approval” of requests for additional Second Assistant Directors if the UPM or First AD determines one is needed. [BA Paragraph 13-202(b)]. Experience tells us that UPMs and producers are reasonable and will respect and support a well thought-out plan. 4. Additional Second ADs should be considered for: • Large background days or shoots where the scope of the set or specialty background requires extra attention • Stunt work • Large principal cast numbers, geographically spread-out locales, or period scenes • Lengthy wraps or lengthy check-in processes, so that an AD can complete all the paperwork on the clock

• Other situations where the performance of all exclusive AD duties photo by Jojo Whilden/CBS Broadcasting Inc. requires additional staffi ng 2nd AD Regina Heckman (right) works with actors on the set of Blue Bloods 5. If you believe duties are being delegated to non-represented employees, alert the DGA Staff or fi eld representatives, who will investigate and take proper action. 6. Finally, the accurate completion of paperwork can be a cost-saving measure for employers and must be done by ADs. Insist that our members take full responsibility for the completion of production reports and the SAG Exhibit G. The supervision and signing of all background vouchers is also a core Second AD duty. Please refer to the full version of this letter in the Membership News section of www. dga.org for the complete defi nition of the duties of Second ADs. Pass this information on to fellow directorial team members when starting a new job and help yourselves and your Guild by protecting your work.

MAY 2012 I 5 DGA Announces Location, New Date for 2013 Awards On March 19, the DGA announced that the 65th Annual DGA Awards will take place on Saturday, February 2, 2013 in the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles.

The decision to move the date by one week was made during the process of securing the venue. The DGA's Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film has traditionally served as an accurate barometer for the Academy Award for Best Director. Only six times since the DGA Award's inception in 1948 has the winner not gone on to receive the Academy Award for Best Director.
