1 IS AUSTIN STILL AUSTIN? A CULTURAL ANALYSIS THROUGH SOUND John Stevens (TC 660H or TC 359T) Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 13, 2020 __________________________________________ Thomas Palaima Department of Classics Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Richard Brennes Athletics Second Reader 2 Abstract Author: John Stevens Title: Is Austin Still Austin? A Cultural Analysis Through Sound Supervisors: Thomas Palaima, Ph. D and Richard Brennes For the second half of the 20th century, Austin, Texas was defined by its culture and unique personality. The traits that defined the city ushered in a progressive community that was seldom found in the South. In the 1960s, much of the new and young demographic chose music as the medium to share ideas and find community. The following decades saw Austin become a mecca for live music. Austin’s changing culture became defined by the music heard in the plethora of music venues that graced the city streets. As the city recruited technology companies and developed its downtown, live music suffered. People from all over the world have moved to Austin, in part because of the unique culture and live music. The mass-migration these individuals took part in led to the downfall of the music industry in Austin. This thesis will explore the rise of music in Austin, its direct ties with culture, and the eventual loss of culture. I aim for the reader to finish this thesis and think about what direction we want the city to go in. 3 Acknowledgments Thank you to my advisor Professor Thomas Palaima and second-reader Richard Brennes for the support and valuable contributions to my research.

  • Psychobilly Psychosis and the Garage Disease in Athens
IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 5 – Issue 1 – Spring 2020 Psychobilly Psychosis and the Garage Disease in Athens Michael Tsangaris, University of Piraeus, Greece Konstantina Agrafioti, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract The complexity and the bizarre nature of Psychobilly as a music genre and as a music collectivity make it very convenient for reconsidering several views in relation to subcultures, neo-tribes and scenes. More specifically, the case of Greek Psychobilly can categorically present how subcultural trends can be disseminated across gender, social classes and national borders. This study aims to trace historically the scene of Psychobilly in Athens based on typical ethnographic research and analytic autoethnography. The research question is: Which are the necessary elements that can determine the existence of a local music scene? Supported by semi-structured interviews, the study examines how individuals related to the Psychobilly subculture comprehend what constitutes the Greek Psychobilly scene. Although it can be questionable whether there ever was a Psychobilly scene in Athens, there were always small circles in existence into which people drifted and stayed for quite a while, constituting the pure core of the Greek Psychobilly subculture. Keywords: psychobilly, music genres, Athens, Post-subcultural Theory 31 IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 5 – Issue 1 – Spring 2020 Introduction According to the American Countercultures Encyclopaedia, Psychobilly is a subculture that emerged in the 1980s from the unlikely combination of rockabilly and punk rock. The provocative and sometimes outrageous style associated with psychobillies (also known as “psychos”) mixes the blue-collar rawness and rebellion of 1950s rockabilly with the confrontational do-it-yourself style of 1970s punk rock, a syncretism infused with themes from monster and horror films, campy sci-fi movies, and even professional wrestling” (Wojcik, 2013, p.

  • Must-See Shows by Texas Artists for June 11 - 17
Must -see shows by Texas artists for June 11 - 17 | Mario Tarradell Columns and Reviews ... Page 1 of 1 Must-see shows by Texas artists for June 11 - 17 By Mario Tarradell Music Critic [email protected] Published 09 June 2010 06:31 AM Dallas' Erykah Badu may finally get past the controversy over her "Window Seat" video, the one where she stripped naked in Dealey Plaza and collapsed at the sound of a gunshot, and concentrate on what she does best: making music and performing onstage. Her tour, featuring opening act Janelle Monáe, is in full swing and has already generated positive words from The Washington Post . Post staff writer Chris Richards reviewed her DAR Constitution Hall two-night stand late last month, acknowledging Badu's famously spacey characteristics yet never shortchanging her knack for crafting a compelling show. "When Badu lowered her arms , the lights would dim," wrote Richards. "When she twirled her wrist, her backing musicians would soften their grooves to a whisper. James Brown used to stop and start his band like an angry traffic cop. Badu conducts hers like a New Age sorceress." Trying to figure out what Badu will do in concert is probably futile. She's not the type to memorize the flow of a show and repeat it night after night with rote precision. But surely you can expect songs from her career-launching debut album, 1997's Baduizm. Plus, she'll surely focus a lot of attention on her stellar R&B opus, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh, which was released in March.
