Dom Dwyer Turns PRO at Sporting Kansas City. Dom's Dream When Dom Dwyer turns PRO at Sporting Kansas City. Dom’s dream when moving to a college in America was to turn professional and play in the MLS. He has taken a giant step towards achieving this. After a great first season with the University of South Florida Dom was selected to attend the MLS player combine, where over 40 top college soccer prospects get to showcase themselves in front of MLS coaches. The name Dom Dwyer had already reached far and wide around the US as a young player who was not only a power house but a prolific goal scorer, some had named him the ‘British Bulldog’. More good news arrived before the televised MLS Super Draft in Florida as generation adidas signed him as one of their players, this put Dom in a great position to be picked in the first round draw. On Thursday 12th January 2012 at the MLS Super Draft in Kansas City Dom was selected on the 16th pick by Sporting Kansas City, current champions of the Western Division. Dom’s comments live on ESPN2 was “I’m very excited, especially to have the home crowd here in attendance today.” & “It’s great to be able to meet the club’s supporters and I’m very happy to have this opportunity to play in Major League Soccer.” Dom has since moved to Kansas City and participated in a very intense pre season program which has included a residential in Arizona and a number of fixtures. Dom has had plenty of opportunities to show what he is capable of which included an assist in a 2-1 victory over DC United and a hat trick in a 5-1 victory against PDL side FC Tucson. In Dom’s home debut he played an instrumental attacking role in Sporting Kansas City’s win over Rockhurst in an expedition match, which included him scoring in the 2-0 win. Regular video highlights, interviews and news which includes footage of Dom in action can be found at www.sportingkc.com/videos. Dom missed out on a place in the squad for the opening home MLS fixture against New England Revolution, a game which Sporting Kansas City won comfortably 3-0. During midweek Dom played 90mins for Kansas City Reserves against Real Salt Lake earning his team a point with another well taken goal in the 88th minute. Again regular updates of his development can be found at www.sportingkc.com you can also follow him on twitter @Ddwyer14. .

Administration of Barack H. Obama, 2010 Remarks Honoring the 2009 Major League Soccer Champion Real Salt Lake June 4, 2010 Hello, everybody. Please have a seat. Well, welcome to the White House. And congratulations on winning your first MLS Cup championship and for bringing the State of Utah its first professional sports title in almost 40 years. That's a pretty big deal. You can give them a round of applause for that again. I want to acknowledge the Senator from the great State of Utah, Senator Bennett, who is here. He is incredibly proud of this team—too tall to play soccer. [Laughter] I want to congratulate Dave Checketts for his leadership and for dedicating his career to expanding the world of professional sports. And, of course, I want to congratulate the players and coaches from Real Salt Lake. I know that this team had a pretty unlikely journey to get here. You qualified for the playoffs on the last day of the season with a losing record. [Laughter] That's cutting it a little close, guys. [Laughter] You beat your biggest rival, took down the defending champions on your way to the title game. And with the cup on the line, you held two of the game's biggest stars scoreless in regulation and went on to win in a shootout, all of which goes to show that in Major League Soccer, there's no such thing as a foregone conclusion. Now, you did it because, in the words of Coach Kreis—and I have to say this is one of the rare coaches that I see in these events who I think might be able to still play—[laughter]—he looks very fit.

PHILADELPHIA SOCCER HISTORY / US OPEN CUP Philly and the US Open Cup Final Posted by Ed Farnsworth on August 13, 2014 at 12:15 pm Featured image: The Bethlehem Steel FC victory float after winning their second US Open Cup, then known as the National Challenge Cup, on May 6, 1916. (Photo: University Archives & Special Collections Department, Lovejoy Library, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) Philadelphia teams, both amateur and professional, have a long history of appearances in the final of America’s oldest soccer competition, winning the US Open Cup ten times. The last Philadelphia team to do so was the Ukrainian Nationals in 1966. At PPL Park on Sept. 16 at 7:30 pm, the Philadelphia Union will look to restart that winning tradition. Before the US Open Cup Before the founding of the US Open Cup in the 1913–1914 season, the claim for a national soccer title was held by the American Cup competition, also known as the American Football Association Cup and the American Federation Cup. First organized by the American Football Association in 1885, the competition primarily featured teams from the early American soccer triangle of Northern New Jersey, Southern New York and lower New England. In 1897, the John A. Manz team became the first Philadelphia club to win the American Cup. Tacony won in 1910 with Philadelphia Hibernian losing in the final the following year. In 1914, Bethlehem Steel FC won the first of its six American Cup titles by beating Tacony, who had also lost to Northern New Jersey’s Paterson True Blues in the final the year before.

Sporting KC Gets an Assist from SeatGeek: Can Sporting KC Score? Prepared for the 2017 National Sports Forum Case Cup Competition Written by: Jan Owens, Carthage College Deborah Cowles, Virginia Commonwealth University Matt Sauber, Eastern Michigan University Sporting KC Gets an Assist from SeatGeek Can Sporting KC Score? Executive Summary Sporting KC is an American professional soccer club based in the greater Kansas City metro area with the actual matches played at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Beginning in 2017, the club will sell tickets through SeatGeek, an online ticket platform as its primary ticketing distributor. Jake Reid, Sporting KC’s President, sees this relationship as the next generation of online ticket sales. As the popularity of professional soccer expands, Millennials will become the largest demographic segment of sports fans. Moreover, as consumers increasingly make purchases in a digital -- largely mobile -- environment, Sporting KC expects the SeatGeek relationship to be a strategic partnership for growth and profitability for both entities. Now, the challenge is for you, as Sporting KC’s marketing team, to take advantage of SeatGeek’s – and the team’s – strengths and to ride the momentum of positive trends. The Case Study The Scene Sporting Kansas City President Jake Reid 1 leaned back in his desk chair, elated yet aware of new challenges. It had just been announced “that ticketing industry leader SeatGeek will become the club’s official ticketing partner starting in 2017”.2 This was an outcome of a ground-breaking multi-year initiative between SeatGeek and Major League Soccer (MLS), which made SeatGeek the official ticketing partner of MLS.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions “FAQs” Proposal to Bring Major League Soccer to Portland, Oregon Prepared by the Office of Mayor Sam Adams, the Office of Commissioner Randy Leonard, Office of Management and Finance, Office of the City Attorney Updated March 10, 2009 1) Why bring major league soccer to Portland? Mayor Sam Adams: “Sports have the power to bring people together diverse groups…to inspire…to promote in the community healthy lifestyles and family- friendly opportunities…to raise a city’s profile nationally and even internationally…all the more so with a sport like soccer, the most played sport on earth…as we aspire to build the most sustainable economy in the world, we will add a community point of pride that resonates with the world in a language so much of the world speaks – the language of “futbol.” Link to full statement by Mayor Sam Adams: http://www.portlandonline.com/mayor/index.cfm?c=49519&a=234419&direct 2) Given the economic uncertainties and pending cuts to City government services why spend the time and money now to bring major league soccer to Portland? To help answer this question and others, on November 26, 2008, the City Council created the Task Force to evaluate the possibility of bringing major league soccer to Portland. The Task Force meetings were public and broadcast on television. Major league soccer is making its decision now for selecting new cities for new teams. MLS would like teams to be fielded concurrently in Vancouver, BC, Seattle and Portland. The City Council also provided the Task Force a set of Guiding Principles: http://www.portlandonline.com/omf/index.cfm?c=49495&a=227942 to shape their evaluation.

MLS as a Sports Product – the Prominence of the World’s Game in the U.S. April 8, 2021 Abstract The purpose of this Working Paper is to analyze how soccer at the professional level in the U.S., with Major League Soccer as a focal point, has developed over the span of a quarter of a century. It is worthwhile to examine the growth of MLS from its first game in 1996 to where the league currently stands as a business as it moves past its 25th anniversary. The 1994 World Cup (held in the U.S.) and the subsequent implementation of MLS as a U.S. professional league exerted a major positive influence on soccer participation and fandom in the U.S. Consequently, more importance was placed on soccer in the country’s culture. The research reported here explores the league’s evolution and development through the cohesion existing between its sporting and business development, as well as its performance.

Administration of Barack Obama, 2014 Remarks Honoring the 2013 Major League Soccer Champion Sporting Kansas City October 1, 2014 The President. Hello, everybody! Hello, Kansas City. Everybody, have a seat. Have a seat. Welcome to the White House. Give it up to the MLS champ, Sporting Kansas City. [Applause] Yay! Now, my Press Secretary, Josh Earnest, is from Kansas City. He has made the observation that the Royals are advancing, that the Chiefs made the Patriots look kind of bad on Monday night. [Laughter] And so, clearly, something is going on in Kansas City, but apparently, these guys are the ones who got it all started, got the ball rolling. It's a pretty good day to be from Kansas City. You guys are feeling kind of cocky right now. [Laughter] We've got some Members of Congress who are here today from Kansas City, who obviously love sports. It's a great sports town. We've got the Sporting KC's owners and family. I want to congratulate your manager, Peter Vermes, for becoming the first person in MLS history to win titles both as a player and a coach in the same organization. [Applause] Pretty good. That is not the only history that Sporting KC made this season. After beating New England and Houston in the playoffs to win the Eastern Conference, they were rewarded with the coldest title game ever played in Major League Soccer. [Laughter] When the game started, the temperature was just 20 degrees. By the end, it was less than 10 degrees. I'm sure that felt good.
