Bøgerne er oversat fra engelsk, men disse bøger indeholder en del sanskrit-ord. Flere af disse sanskrit-ord dækker begreber, der kun vanskeligt lader sig forklare endsige oversætte. Forklaringen af visse ord ville, selv om man anvendte flere sider, ikke være fyldestgørende. For at gøre bøgerne læsevenlige og samtidig give læseren mulighed for at undersøge begreber, navne og steder nøjere, har jeg udarbejdet er ordliste, der bringes bagest i bogen Første gang et ord på sanskrit er blevet oversat til dansk, er denne oversættelse markeret med en understregning. Denne oversættelse er så blevet registreret i ordlisten. Det oversatte sanskrit-ord kan findes ved at søge i den alfabetiske rækkefølge, som den understregne tekst eller ord er ordnet efter. Står der f.eks.: ”Du fremsiger muligvis formlen: ’Jeg er Gud’ korrekt…”, så skal I søge efter ’Jeg er Gud’ i ordlisten under j. Ordlisten skal som nævnt udelukkende opfattes som en service for de læsere, der ønsker at kende de oprindelige sanskrit-ord, så de eventuelt kan fordybe sig i udvalgte begreber. Det er vigtigt at bemærke, at næsten alle sanskrit-ord har adskillige betydninger. Som hovedregel indeholder ordlisten kun de ord eller vendinger, som sanskrit-ordet er oversat til i den konkrete sammenhæng. Jeg er glad for, at du har åbnet denne bog og besluttet dig for at fordybe dig i dens sider. I det første bind af denne bog ’Sathyam Sivam Sundaram’ fortalte jeg historien om Det Guddommeliges komme, som Baba, i menneskelig skikkelse. Desuden fortalte jeg om Den Overmenneskelige Intelligens tidlige år; om den epokegørende bekendtgørelse om omstændighederne vedrørende Inkarnationen; om de vidunderlige gerninger og tegn som Han benytter Sig af for at få de mennesker, der er sene til at fatte og forstå, til at forstå; om Hans Nåde og barmhjertigheds rigdom, Hans alvidenhed og den gavmildhed der præger Hans medfølelse. I dag er jeg 76 år gammel. Han har ladet mig leve de sidste 25 år med Ham, i Ham, gennem Ham, for Ham og i kraft af Ham. Jeg er blot en refleksion af det ’Jeg’, som er Ham. På pilgrimsfærden møder jeg brødre og søstre, der er mere vedholdende og robuste end jeg, og som hjulpet af Hans Nåde bevæger sig højere og højere op. Brindavan Herren Rama’s fødselsdag, 1981 N. Kasturi 4 Kapitel 1 Resumé (1926 – 1961) 1.1. Hans legekammerater kaldte Ham for ’guru’. For Han var altid ivrig efter at rette på deres opførsel og trøste dem. Han opmuntrede dem, når de ikke havde det så godt, og Han syntes aldrig at blive sur eller træt. Selv i denne unge alder var Han en rundhåndet giver, for ud af tomme tasker hentede Han dejlige søde sager, blyanter, viskelæder, legetøj, blomster og frugter, som Han gav dem. 1.2. En ring af lyserøde og brunlige bjerge, en bred og dyb dal med en flod der skærer sig igennem, og som strømmer ud i et reservoir, som en kejser byggede for omkring 600 år siden – det er det miljø, hvor landsbyen Puttaparthi ligger lunt og godt. Det er stedet, hvorfra en høvding i fortiden herskede over det omkringliggende område. Senere blev stedet lagt næsten øde og blev isoleret, men området fortsatte med at være et sted, der fostrede helgener og lærde. Høvdingens familie, fyrstefamilien, fortsatte med at lede og vejlede, at undervise og træne landsbyens ungdom. 1.3. Kondama Raju var en hellig og hjertensgod hundredårig mand, der opførte et tempel for Sathyabhama, Herren Krishna’s temperamentsfulde gemalinde. Han var sagkyndig udi de ældgamle hellige tekster og skrifter. Han opkaldte sin ældste søn efter en berømt eneboer, der prydede familiens stamtræ. Denne eneboers navn var Venka Avadhootha. Han kaldte drengen for Pedda Venkappa Raju. Denne søn giftede sig med en fjern slægtning. Hun var en datter, der blev født efter hendes fader havde bygget et tempel for Siva (under navnet Easwara). Og af den grund fik datteren navnet Easwaraamba. Venkappa Raju og Easwaraamba blev et fromt og gudfrygtigt par, der levede stille og roligt, og som var tilfredse med tilværelsen. Den eneste fornøjelse som Venkappa tillod sig selv at have, var at spille store heltedigt-roller på landsbyscenen, præcis som hans fader, Kondama Raju, havde gjort. Dette par fik en søn og to døtre. Senere skete der det, at der den 23. november 1926 blev født yderligere en søn, Sathyanarayana. Denne dreng beviste snart, at Han var unik; at Han var Guddommelig både af natur og i henhold til de evner, Han besad. 1.4. Hans legekammerater kaldte Ham for ’guru’. For Han var altid ivrig efter at rette på deres opførsel og trøste dem. Han opmuntrede dem, når de ikke havde det så godt, og Han syntes aldrig at blive sur eller træt. Når Han blev spurgt, hvordan Han fik fat i disse ting, så svarede Han: ”Åh! Landsbyens Gudinde giver Mig, hvad Jeg ønsker!” Det var blot for at slukke deres tørst; det var det eneste svar, der ville dæmpe deres tvivl. Men forundringen vedblev med at være der. 1.5. Denne undren steg i styrke, da Han blev sendt i skole. Her fik Han et nyt kælenavn: Brahmajnani. Det betyder: ’Én der har tilegnet sig den visdom, der åbenbarer Den Indre Virkelighed’. Sikke et navn til en dreng, der er seks somre gammel! I en alder af otte år besluttede Sathyanarayana Sig for at åbenbare Sit mysterium ved at udføre et dramatisk mirakel. Det skete, da Hans lærer beordrede Ham til at stille Sig op på skolebænken og blive der. Denne straf blev givet, fordi Han var uinteresseret i, hvad der foregik i klasselokalet. Det var Hans Vilje, at læreren forblev fastklæbet til stolen, indtil Han senere trådte ned fra bænken. Sådan gik det for sig, at Han blev det store samtaleemne i området. På trods af al denne offentlige omtale forblev Han en ligefrem og sød dreng. Han dannede en bønnegruppe, 5 der bestod af drenge fra Hans landsby. Han førte dem fra sted til sted og lod dem synge de lovsange, Han havde skrevet og lært dem. 1.6. Hvad angår dans og musik, var Han ekspert, og det var Han også inden for scene- optræden. Hans evner og talenter blev brugt af teaterselskaber, der turnerede rundt på landet. Han havde den dristighed at skrive sange til dem og Sig Selv, og Han skrev endog dialoger til teateret, alt sammen inden Han fyldte 12 år. Han ledsagede Sin ældre broder til Kamalapur og Uravakonda, hvor broderen arbejdede som lærer i sproget telugu. I skolerne i disse byer var Han Sine lærere langt overlegen. Han var usædvanlig dygtig som digter, skuespilforfatter og sangskriver, og Han var en dygtig spejder og sportsmand. Han besad også den mystiske evne at kunne spore mistede ejendele, at kunne læse andres tanker, at kunne se langt ind i fremtiden og langt tilbage i fortiden. Han blev byens yndling, og de ulykkelige og de undertrykte opsøgte Ham ofte. 1.7. Han gennemførte det første år på High School, og Han var kun nogle få uger inde i det andet skoleår, da Han ikke længere kunne ignorere det kald, den opgave, der havde bragt Ham ned blandt mennesker.

The realization of the existence of the omnipresent Brahman --- the Great Spirit is the goal of the spiritual venture. Gradually traditional Hinduism developed negative elements born out of age-old superstitious practices. During the nineteenth century changes occurred in the socio-cultural sphere of colonial India. Challenges from Christianity and Brahmoism led the orthodox Hindus becoming defensive of their practices. Towards the end of the century the nationalist forces identified with traditional Hinduism. Sri Ramakrishna, a Bengali temple-priest propagated a new interpretation of the Hindu scriptures. Without formal education he could interpret the essence of the scriptures with an unprecedented simplicity. With a deep insight into the rapidly changing social scenario he realized the necessity of a humanist religious practice. He preached the message to serve the people as the representative of God. In an age of religious debates he practiced all the religions and attained at the same Truth. Swami Vivekananda, his closest disciple carried the message to the Western world. In the Conference of World religions held at Chicago (1893) he won the heart of the audience by a simple speech which reflected his deep belief in the humanist message of the Upanishads. Later on he was successful to establish the Ramakrishna Mission at Belur, West Bengal.

Isherwood (1944); Crest-Jewel of Discrimination with C. Isherwood (1947); and The Upanishads: Breath of the Eternal with F. Manchester (1948). (2) Commentaries on religious scripture (3): How to Know God: The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali with C. Isherwood (1953); The Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta (1963); and Narada’s Way of Divine Love: The Bhakti Sutras of Narada (1971). Prior to publication of these books, the Swami gave a series of highly praised in-depth lectures on the Sermon on the Mount and Narada’s Bhakti Sutras, as well as on the Bhagavad Gita, all of which can be purchased from Vedanta Press and Catalog. Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood provided an invaluable service by making Eastern scripture intelligible to the Western reader. The ambiguity of many translations and commentaries had proved to be a great obstacle in spreading Vedantic ideas to readers in the West.
