The ground beetle supertribe Zuphiitae in the southern Levant (Coleoptera, Carabidae). Spixiana 38 (2): 237-262. Based on the study of approximately 400 specimens, we give an overview of the systematics and taxonomy, distribution, dispersal power, and habitat preferences of the carabids belonging to the tribes Anthiini, Helluonini, Dryptini, and Zuphiini in the southern Levant (Egypt: Sinai, Israel and Jordan). We provide identification keys for the members of the given taxa in this region. Eleven species of the Zuphi- itae sensu Ober & Maddison (2008) have previously been published from the southern Levant. -
A Study of the Coleopteran Fauna of Two Agricultural

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT A study was carried out to investigate the ground beetles of four habitats - cultivated farmland, Ifallow plot, a marshy plot and a secondary regrowth forest at the permanent site of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria for a twelve-month period using the pitfall technique. Species of Coleoptera obtained from the four plots include Macrocheilus labrosus, Hyparpalus sp., Carpophilus fumatus (Boh.), Podagrica uniforma (Jac.), Tetragonothorax sp., Chlaenius sp., Pheropsophus parallus (Dej.), Silidus apicalis (Waterh), Tenebroides mauritanicus (L), Heteroderes sp., Heterorynchus licas (Klug.) and Mylabris sp., Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicate that the abundance of beetles wee significantly different in the cultivated farmland (F = 6.062). The result of Fisher’s Least Significance Difference (F-LSD) test shows that the pitfall catches of beetles from the four sampling sites were also significantly different. The heterogeneity of the coleopteran species at the cultivated plot was traced to cultivation. The role of certain coleopteran families as faunal indicators was highlighted. How this diversity evolved has been difficult to reconstruct, perhaps because harpalines underwent a rapid burst of diversification early in their evolutionary history. Here we investigate the tempo of evolution in harpalines using molecular divergence dating techniques and explore the rates of lineage accumulation in harpalines and their sister group. Results: According to molecular divergence date estimates, harpalines originated in the mid Cretaceous but did not diversify extensively until the late Cretaceous or early Paleogene about 32 million years after their origin. In a relatively small window of time, harpalines underwent rapid speciation. Harpalines have a relative high net diversification rate and increased cladogenesis in some regions of the clade. We did not see a significant decrease in diversification rate through time in the MCCR test, but a model of diversification with two shift points to lower diversification rates fit the harpaline lineage accumulation through time the best. Conclusions: Our results indicate harpalines are significantly more diverse and have higher diversification than their sistergroup. Instead of an immediate burst of explosive diversification, harpalines may have had a long “fuse” before major lineages diversified during the early Paleogene when other taxa such as mammals, birds, and some flowering plants were also rapidly diversifying. -

Der vorliegende Band bringt den Schluss der Chrysomelidae, nämlich die Abtheilungen der Hatticinae, Galerucinae, Hispinae und Cassidinae. Für die beiden letztgenannten Gruppen haben zwar dem Verf. die Arbeiten Baly's und Boheman's als Grundlagen gedient, er hat jedoch dieselben vielfach durch selbstständiges Studium umgestaltet, was besonders von der Boheman' sehen Monographie gilt, in welcher bekanntlich gegen das Detail der Artenbeschreibungen die höhere systematische Gliederung sehr vernachlässigt worden ist. Gänzlich neue Bahnen musste sich der Verf. dagegen bei den Galerucinae und Hatticinae brechen, die vor ihm noch Niemand zum Gegenstand einer umfassenden Bearbeitung gewählt hatte. Hier hat derselbe wenn auch keine endgiltige und erschöpfende Darstellung des Stoffes, wozu ihm offenbar nicht hinreichendes Material zur Disposition stand, so doch eine erstmalige allgemeine und gründliche Durcharbeitung desselben geliefert. Das eminente Verdienst des Verf.'s beruht also nicht allein in der gewandten und sorgfältigen Behandlung seines Themas, sondern wesentlich darin, dass durch seine Arbeit gegenwärtig eine feste Basis gegeben ist, an welcher das weitere systematische Studium der be- treffenden Gruppen stets eine zuverlässige Stütze finden wird. Die „Genera des Coleopteres" sind wohl jedem wissenschaftlich thätigen Entomologen zur Hand und ich kann mich daher um so mehr auf eine kurze Anzeige derselben beschränken als auch für Vol. XII des Münchener Catalogs dieser Band noch benutzt werden konnte.
