    The History of St. Thomas the Apostle The First Fifty Years The following is from a small book commemorating the 50th Anniversary of St. Thomas the Apostle. THE YEAR was 1902, the month was July, the day was the 9th. This date will never be forgotten as it was on this day that His Excellency, the Most Reverend John J. Monaghan, Bishop of the Diocese of Wilmington, had purchased the property, near Fourth Street and Grant Avenue, as the site for a new Catholic Church and initiated the erection thereon of a combined church and school to be named in honor of the patron saint of the first Bishop of Wilmington, Most Reverend Thomas A. Becker. The cornerstone was laid on May 24, 1903, by Bishop Monaghan, assisted by Vicar-General John A. Lyons and a large group of priests. The ceremonies began with a processional from the home of the Little Sisters of the Poor to a large wooden cross on the Church site where it was determined that the altar would be erected. After blessing this particular spot, the Bishop then consecrated and laid the cornerstone. Following this he blessed the foundation and then bestowed the Papal Blessing on all those present at the ceremony. The sermon was delivered by the Reverend Francis T. McCarthy, TOP – Original Church and School, now the old gym. S.J., while the musical program was under the direction of Professor BOTTOM – The brand new rectory in 1911. James Curran. After Stanford, Wardin went to Western Seminary in Portland, where he got the bachelor of divinity degree. He completed his Ph.D. in history at the University of Oregon, writing his dissertation on Baptists in Oregon. Wardin taught at Western Seminary in Portland for a total of eight years. In 1967, he began a long career as history professor at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. He started collecting material on Russian Baptists because of his family connection with Russian Baptists. The family interest collection began in the 1960s and grew to a massive collection.

The landmark outcome of this Congress was the Lausanne Covenant supported by the 2,430 participants from 150 nations. The covenant proclaims the substance of the Christian faith as historically declared in the creeds and adds a clear missional dimension to our faith.

The purpose of the study is to find out why the Assemblies of God Mission (AGM) is no longer waxing strong vis-à-vis during its emergence. Findings showed that there are a lot of bickering and bigotries among the pastors and the lay. The crave for materialism is seriously affecting the spiritual life of the church. Methods of approach are historical and descriptive coupled with primary and secondary sources. Keywords: Mission, evangelism, charity, Igboland, and development and expansion Introduction The missionaries of the Europeans had settled down for the task of “civilizing” the indigenes, a process of westernization usually mistaken for Christianity, abandoning the pneumatic values of the Kerygma. It was this negligence that agitated the minds of Harris, Braide and American Evangelicals to launch aggressive evangelism in the early twentieth century. The legend Augustus Ehurien Nwogu of Old Umuahia in Abia State was a product of this early 20th century church development. The crisis thus generated in him led to his reconversion from Niger Delta Pastorate (NDP) to the faith Tabernacle Congregation (FTC). He Nmah Preorcjah Vol. 2(1), 2017 later separated from the FTC to form the church of Jesus Christ (CJC), which shortly became Assemblies of God Mission in Igboland (Ndubuisi, 1997). The main objectives of this study is to discuss the effects of bickery, materialism, lukewarm attitude towards mission and evangelism, and how they have created unnecessary rivalry, hatred, envy, spiritual barrenness and administrative bankruptcy.
