Despite everything, Christmas is still on its way Thinking of all of the problems in this part of the world these days, it feels hard to let that genuine Holiday Spirit take over. Back in the 60’s when we were spreading the idea ”Peace, Love, and Understanding,” I couldn’t in my wildest dreams image that the beginning of the new millennium would be spent watching the world bomb itself to death. As I try to concentrate and compose my thoughts for this edition of the comings and goings within the global wine community, the Europe that I am a citizen of seems instabile at best. Here is an attempt: Susanne gets us started with a MASI tasting which might answer some ques- tions about why Italian wines are flying off the shelfs in Sweden right now. Ursula describes what happens when Chateau Palmer is put up against Alter Ego, and which wines were represented at Fine Wine Tasting 2015. Christopher Jarnvall reflects on which of these wines complement different types of game, and win- emaker Peter Gago comments on Penfolds release of the 2011’s. We visit Prunotto in Alba, investigate what South African Allesverloren is up to, and then allow Andreas Kjörling to toast Charles Heidsieck. The latest wine and spirits auction in Stockholm included a whiskey from the 1920’s, tapped in the 1960’s, which sold for almost double the asking price. Global interest in the Stockholm auctions keeps growing. Read more about what is happening at the large international auction firms in WebAuction Special.

Wrapping up, we want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

Krug Vintage 2003 – Vivacité Solair Lively luster – or vivacité solair as Krug is calling its new 2003 vintage. The name gives the appearance of a story about a warm year that surprised many people, with its fruitiness, freshness, balance expres- siveness, liveliness and elegance. Krug 2003 is an unparalleled blend of the year’s wines from several different vineyard locations. Joseph Krug’s pioneer spirit from 170 years ago, when he determined that champagne’s inner spirit is the basis for enjoyment, laid the foundation for Krug Vintage 2003. An entirely unique vintage with the expressive aromas of citrus, plumbs, liquid honey and brioche, as well as a unique taste with summer fruits, red grapefruit and candied fruit rinds, roasted chestnuts and caramelized apples, with a long aftertaste and stamina. The tasting was enjoyed at Grand Hotell together with Rich- ard Juhlin. A little bit later, Jessica Julmy, Krug’s Head of Busi- ness Development Europa, arrived as well. Krug Vintage 2003, 750 ml is available through Systembola- get (item #90645) for SEK 1 931 in a limited edition.

Le beaujolais nouveau est arrivee! The time has finally arrived for this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau release at Systembolaget. From a very large and competitive field of candidates, Systembolaget chose producer Pierre Dupond’s modern Beaujolais wine as this year’s representative for the annual tradi- tion with unaged wine. The wine was launched at Systembolaget on November 19th, and costs SEK 79. Count on limited availability, as last year’s Beaujolais wine was sold out in many boutiques after only a few hours. Karl Öjerskog, Managing Director at Espumante AB, is the Swedish im- porter for Pierre Dupond’s wines. ”– It feels really great to be able to offer a somewhat different Beaujolais this year. Pierre Dupond’s wine has a modern profile, and another fun detail is that, despite its fruity, almost sweet character, it contains almost no residual sugar – only 0.5 g/l.”

MOËT & CHANDON GRAND VINTAGE 2006 Marc Brevot, one of the winemakers behind MOËT & CHANDON Grand Vintage, was on hand at Operabaren in Stockholm over lunch, to de- scribe how he thinks a glass of Grand Vintag 2006 should taste. ” – The freedom to enjoy an unforgettable moment, just like we’re doing here today, is the most important ingredient. It is easy to recognize the fresh and unmistakable taste of MOÊT, where three important factors are in play: freedom of interpretation, selection of a particular year’s finest grapes, and regard for individuality.” Grand Vintage is aged for seven years in the House’s cellars in Epernay. As the champagne matures, the yeast takes over, as shown by the result of this unique blend that led up to this particular year’s vintage – 2006. The finer and most sophisticated tastes are brought to the fore, and the desired complexity is present. With ma- turity come smaller bubbles – another sign of quality. MOËT & CHANDON Grand Vintage 2006 is available through Systembolaget (item # 7535) for SEK 499.

Domaine Bousquet reaches new heights Domain Bousquet’s vineyards lie in Mendoza in Argentina, right at the foot of the Andes at an altitude of an astonishing 1200 meters above sea level, placing it among the highest located vineyards in the world. The conditions here are perfect for making wine – warm summer days and cold nights with low humidity. The perfect sandy soil provides completely unique opportuni- ties for having the best of two worlds – deep, sun-ripened fruits combined with elegance and freshness, resulting many successes at international wine competitions. Domaine Bousquet has been on the Swedish Systembolaget’s shelves since 2005, and is also one of the first and largest ecological producers in South America. Spicy Christmas schnapps from Danmark Spiced schnapps is a signature element of Scandinavian cuisine, especially around the holidays. Almost all of our old farmhouse dishes are sisterly con- nected with cumin or dill spiced schnapps. In Scandinavian countries, the art of spicing aquavit has developed into a world leading competition. In more re- cent times, this tradition has become modernized with new spice combinations and new technologies leading to new products. For example, Denmark’s Den ny Spritfabrik A/S and their aquavits D Argentum and D Aurum. Both of these dill schnapps are the result of a multiyear research project where Den ny Spritfabrik, the University of Copen- hagen and the Danish research institute Agrotech developed a new, patented meth- od to macerate and distill aquavit (Patent protected 2014). Both of the schnapps are based on classic dill schnapps, and are pro- duced from carefully selected and handled raw ingredients, while keeping a rigorous focus on quality. everything is not lost…

”Allesverloren!” (everything is lost), screamed the owners when their new estate burned to the ground. Today, that estate is more known as Alles- verloren Wine Estate.

This producer comes from South Africa, Swartland to be more precise, a wine district is about a two-hour car trip north from Cape Town. Taking a look at its history, this property can be dated back to 1696 when farmers tilled the soil. Simple tools were used in those days, and if they needed to be purchased or even if one just wanted to go to church, a long, journey on precarious roads was necessary. And while returning from just such a trip in 1704, the owner arrived home to discover his farmhouse and fields had been com- pletely destroyed by a fire. He cried out, ”Allesverloren!” The estate was quickly rebuilt and renamed after the farmer’s ex- clamation. Allesverloren. About 100 years later in 1806, the owner at the time could pick the first grapes.

37 INTERNATIONAL up and coming california wine regions By Bob Ecker

Lake County, California: When we think of American wine, we think of the State of California. After all, over 90% of wine produced in this country comes from the Gol- den State. Famous wine re- gions like Napa Valley, Sono- ma and Santa Barbara County are well known, but a number of up and coming California wine regions are producing stellar grapes – and wines worth seeking out. Below are some of the up and comers that should be on your Cali- fornia wine radar.

Lake County Bordered by the famous wine re- gions of Napa (and Mt. 51 INTERNATIONAL hunting season is

openChrist ophagain!er Jarnvall

And so it is fall again – and hunting season! As I write this article, we at Res Tuta have al- ready managed to set happy hunters on their way to Africa to hunt plains game as well as buffalo. And we’ve received reports that ”our” hunters in Scotland have already mana- ged to shoot some fine deer – as for me, I’ve gotten a in a few duck hunts. But there will be more. And earlier this fall, we signed an agreement with a Polish hunting club for fu- ture projects. Hunting in Po- land offers much in the way of cloven-footed game – yes, the most exclusive is the bi- son hunt, which still operates on a small scale with the pro- tected population in eastern Poland.

RECIPE FOR WARM WINTER DRINKS Ludvig Grenmo, bar manager at Linje Tio in Stockholm, has created two inspiring recipes - one with Lindeman’s Shiraz Cabernet and one with Lindeman’s Chardonnay. Lindeman’s Fireplace Dream Ludvig: ”For this warming red drink, I chose to include tastes that are currently popular – which means that I chose to work with sweetness, acidity and different spices. For example, the licorice is an exciting fla- vor to combine with Lindeman’s Shiraz Cabernet, and pairs well with the sweetness of the rock candy sugar. Even the tea and the sweetness from the apricots match well with the wine and the other ingredients. A classic red wine drink with a twist!” 75 cl Lindeman’s Shiraz Cabernet, 10 cl rock candy spiced sugar, 3 dried apricots, 1 licorice root, 2 g Rooibos tea, 10 cm long cinna- mon stick, 10 cloves, 15 allspice, 1 orange rind, 10 ginger slices How to make it: Heat the wine to 75 C and then add the ingredi- ents. Increase temperature to 90 C and allow the spices to soften for about 10 minutes. Before serving, let the drink cool down a few degrees – it’s hot! Garnish with some pieces of dried apricot and then serve!

Lindeman’s Caribbean Snow Ludvig:” ” This is a more public and trendy win drink. Passion fruit is an unusual ingredient in a warm drink, but it tastes really good! The passion fruit and cinnamon combination give it a kind of Caribbean taste. The bay leaves are also fantastic – when they are warmed up, they help release all sorts of fruity tastes, like fresh-picked, wild and genuine. These ingredients combined with Lindeman’s Chardonnay create a fresh and exciting wine drink.” 75 cl Lindeman’s Chardonnay, 8 cl agave sugar, 3 passion fruit, 10 cm long cinnamon stick, 1 lemon rind, 2 apples, 5 bay leaves How to make it: Combine all the ingredients with the wine and heat at 85 C for ten minutes. Serve directly.

64 INTERNATIONAL WebAuc tion special Welcome to December’s Fine wine and Spirits Auctions Sören Nylund, head of valuations for fine wines and spirits auctions at Systembolaget

The December auctions start on Monday, the 7th. This is the eighth and final round of auctions for 2015. There are over 620 items up for bidding, repre- senting pretty much the entire wine and spirits world’s classic areas.

The three-day auction will take place December 7-9, beginning at 10:00 each day. First out are the champagnes and white wines. These are followed by red wines from Bordeaux on the 8th. And finally, the last day of the auction December 9, will include wines from other regions, fortified wines and sev- eral unique distilled items that have gained international attention. Sören Nylund, Before moving on, I have the pleasure of mentioning that the November auction included a 50+ year Head of Valuation, Systembolaget old Macallan from 1928, which claimed the (so-far) highest final bid for an individual bottle ever sold in Sweden: SEK 216,000. That makes the December auction even more exciting, as yet another Macallan has been submitted. This time it is a 60 year old – The Macallan Lailque…

Monday, December 7th – champagne and white wines Champagne will lead off the auction, and contains a large span of vintages from the 1950’s to the much younger champagnes from the 2000’s. Some of the items included are a Bollinger Spectre Limited Edition – a magnum of Bol- linger RD 1988 with accompanying Crystal set designed by Saint Louise Crystal Work. A special release before the launch of the James Bond film Spectre. Other notables: Salon 1985, 1988 and 1990, and Selosse Blanc de Blancs från 1989 and 1990. Destilled The final items are various distilled, and it should prove to be an eventful end to the auction. The anniversary cognac Martell Premier Voyage is expected to be auctioned off in the afternoon. It comes in a specially designed bottle with accompanying sculpture, and is a limited edition. A few hours later it will time for The Macallan Lalique 60 Years from the Speyside region. The fourth edition in The Six Pillars Collection is one of the oldest and most rare whiskies ever bottled by Distillery. It’s topped off with a crystal stopper with a copper cap made from an old Macallan still. All of it comes in a high-polish black lacquer box. The Macallan 60 years old was drawn from some of the house’s oldest stocks. They were housed in five sherry butts, made from a mix of Spanish and American oak and filled 9th and 10th of November 1950. The copper cap on the crystal stopper is made from an old Macallan copper spirit still. Presented in a lacquer box, each decanter is individually numbered – one of 400 in this spe- cial limited edition. Macallan Lalique is a collaboration between the Macallan Speyside Distillery and the French crystal house of Lalique. Among the other cognacs: an exceptionally old 1870’s edi- tion from the 1870’s from the historic cellars of Cave de La Tour d’Argent, the famous restaurant in Paris that dates back to the 1580’s. There is also a 1865 vintage up for auction. From the single malts: historic whiskys from the Lowlands, like Kinclaith, Killyloch from Glenflagler and Ladyburn. There are also whiskys from distilleries that no longer exist. Other items come from Brora, Ardbeg, Highland Park, Port Ellen and more. There are also several Japanese special editions from Hanyu, and Karuizawa is in the last auction of the year for drinks as collector’s items. Read more about the auction’s various object här (link avail- able after Wednesday, December 3). This auction draws curtain on the wine and spirits auction season. I hope I’ve been nice enough this year so that Santa will come. So, even though it is only the end of November, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A very warm welcome to the December auction.

A Century of Classic Wine This spectacular collection, amassed over many years, spans more than a century of classic Bordeaux, Sauternes and Burgundy.

The range of vintages of Classed Growth Bordeaux is ex- traordinary. Lafite sets the tone with no fewer than 24 vin- tages and opens the sale with a single bottle of the rare 1903. Mouton Rothschild is featured in an equally exciting array of vintages, beginning with the coveted 1928, one of the stars of the 20th Century. Latour, Margaux and Haut Bri- on are also well represented. Highlights from the Right Bank include Cheval Blanc 1995, on offer in Double Magnums and impressive Imperials – perfect for large format aficionados! And for the ultimate tasting comparison, there is the stun- ning Le Pin 1995. Leading the Sauternes selection is a superb trio of Yquem vintages – the 1988, 1989 and 1990 – offered in tempting half bottles to decadent Double Magnums, Jeroboams and Imperials. Prized Burgundy includes DRC La Tâche and Richebourg 1972 in their original wooden cases; a magnum of Echézeaux 1989 from Henri Jayer and a case of Clos de la Roche 1986 from Armand Rousseau.

SOTHEBY’S LONDON, 16 & 17 DECEMBER 2015

THE EXCEPTIONAL CELLAR OF A CONNOISSEUR

This collection is both classic and exciting, a reflection of a man who was passionate about art and gastronomy, as well as being an oenophile of great distinction. The cellar was as- sembled over many years with infinite care and knowledge, and stored in perfectly temperature-controlled conditions. The range of majestic Bordeaux is impressive. First and Second Growths abound, in great vintages and in various formats. Both Right and Left Banks are here in force, many in original wooden cases. Landmark vintages such as 1945, 1959 and 1961, and more recent standout vintages such as 1982, 1996 and 2000, have a phenomenal presence. The owner’s ‘penchant’ for Sauternes is evident in this breath- taking selection that encompasses all the great Châteaux in vintages spanning 1899 through to 2009. The list of Burgundy growers is show-stopping, from DRC to Rousseau, Leflaive to Leroy, de Vogüé to Prieuré-Roch. The Rhône wines are a catalogue of gems, from Chave to Rayas to Guigal. Veuve Clicquot Brut 1929 and Krug Clos du Mesnil 1979 are highlights from Champagne. The aristocrats from Italy and Spain are not forgotten, with legendary vintages of the ultra-complex Vega Sicilia, while Piedmont is represented strongly amongst the Italian wines.

Zachys Holiday Auction Features The Private Collection of Bob Hudson, a Spotlight on Italy, and Champagne Philipponnat

What happened to 2015? It went by in a flash. David Let- terman had his last show, we met Caitlyn Jenner, we lost BB King and Leonard Nimoy, we lived through deflategate, Brian Williams and Donald Trump... and the year’s not over yet. The Holiday Auction, taking place on December 4 & 5 at Smith & Wollensky in NYC, is always a fun one at Zachys.
