For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness. -

Otto Sompank I always loved the simplicity and visceral feel of all forms of punk. From the Pistols take on the New York Dolls rock, or the UK Subs aggressive punk take on rhythm and blues. The stark reality Crass and the anarchist-punk scene was informed with aspects of obscure seventies rock too, for example Pete Wright’s prog bass lines in places. Granted. Perhaps the most famous and intense link to rock and punk was Motorhead. While their early output and LP’s definitely had a clear nod to punk (Lemmy playing for the Damned), they appealed to most punks back then with their sheer aggression and intensity. It’s clear Motorhead and Black Sabbath influenced a lot of street-punk and the ferocious tones of Discharge and their Scandinavian counterparts such as Riistetyt, Kaaos and Anti Cimex. The early links were there but the influence of late 1970s early 80s NWOBM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and street punk, Discharge etc. in turn influenced Metallica, Anthrax and Exodus in the early eighties. Most of them can occasionally be seen sporting Discharge, Broken Bones and GBH shirts on their early record-sleeve pictures. Not only that, Newcastle band Venom were equally influential in the mix of new genre forms germinating in the early 1980s. One of the early examples of the incorporation of rock and metal into the UK punk scene came from Discharge. -

For and about FSU people A publication of the FSU Division of Communications and Media Relations Volume 47, Number 17, Feb. 6, 2017 Copy deadline: noon Wednesday, Candis Johnson at [email protected] CES at FSU Receives NEA Grant Award for Tibetan Monks Residency – The Mystical Arts of Tibet CES at FSU has received a Challenge America grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support a March 2017 residency with the Mystical Arts of Tibet. Seventeen other NEA grants were awarded to organizations throughout Maryland. The five-day residency, which takes place from Sunday, March 5, through Thursday, March 9, involves the visit of Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loselang Monastery. The project is part of a tour endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as a means of promoting world peace and healing through sacred performing art. The residency includes multiple free, public events, including workshops and lectures on Tibetan meditation, philosophy, art and culture. Creation of the Mandala A highlight of the project is the creation of a mandala sand painting in FSU’s Lewis J. Ort Library. Over the course of 33 hours and five days at FSU, community members can observe as the monks lay millions of grains of colored sand onto a flat platform to form the image of a mandala. The community is invited to complete an online survey to select the theme of the mandala to be created at http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07edpwtbduiy2zb2d0/start. The process of sand painting is one of Buddhism’s most exquisite artistic traditions. Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid on a flat platform over a period of days to form the image of a mandala.
