INTRODUCTION BYTHE EDITOR HEN Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne- Jones, William Morris, and some fellow-artists painted on the damp walls of the Oxford Un- ion debating hall in 1857, their ignorance of fresco technique led them to produce haunt- ing images of the Middle Ages which, in ghostly fashion, began to fade almost immedi- ately; but the more permanent legacy of this episode was a body of richly revealing anecdotes about the Pre- Raphaelites themselves. Burne-Jones, for example, recalled that Mor- ris was so fanatically precise about the details of medieval costume Figure 1 that he arranged for "a stout little smith" in Oxford to produce a suit of armor which the painters could use as a model. When the basinet arrived, Morris at once tried it on, and Burne-Jones, working high above, looked down and was startled to see his friend "embedded in iron, dancing with rage and roaring inside" because the visor would not lift.1 This picture of Morris imprisoned and blinded by a piece of medie- val armor is an intriguing one: certainly it hints at an interpretation of his career that is not very flattering. But we ought to set alongside it another anecdote, from the last decade of Morris's life, the symbol- ism of which seems equally potent. Early in November 1892, young Sydney Cockerell, recently hired by Morris to catalogue his incunab- ula and medieval manuscripts, spent the entire day immersed in that remote age while studying materials in Morris's library. As evening approached, he emerged again into the nineteenth century (or so he thought) and climbed the staircase of Kelmscott House: "When I went up into the drawing room to say goodnight Morris and his wife were playing at draughts, with large ivory pieces, red and white. -

Towards Chinese Calligraphy Qian Zhuzhong and Fang Desheng I. History of Chinese Calligraphy: A Brief Overview Chinese calligraphy, like script itself, began with hieroglyphs and, over time, has developed various styles and schools, constituting an important part of the national cultural heritage. Chinese scripts are generally divided into five categories: Seal script, Clerical (or Official) script, Regular script, Running script, and Cursive script. What follows is a brief introduction of the evolution of Chinese calligraphy. A. From Prehistory to Xia Dynasty (ca. 16 century B.C.) The art of calligraphy began with the creation of Chinese characters. Without modern technology in ancient times, “Sound couldn’t travel to another place and couldn’t remain, so writings came into being to act as the track of meaning and sound.”1 However, instead of characters, the first calligraphy works were picture-like symbols. These symbols first appeared on ceramic vessels and only showed ambiguous con- cepts without clear meanings. -

The graphic designer today seems to feel that the typographic means at his disposal have been exhausted. Accelerated by the speed of our time, a wish for new excitement is in the air. “New styles” are hopefully expected to appear. Nothing is more constructive than to look the facts in the face. What are they? The fact that nothing new has developed in recent decades? The boredom of the dead end without signs for a renewal? Or is it the realization that a forced change in search of a “new style” can only bring superficial gain? It seems appropriate at this point to recall the essence of statements made by progressive typographers of the 1920s: Previously used largely as a medium for making language visible, typographic material was discovered to have distinctive optical properties of its own, pointing toward specifically typographic expression. Typographers envisioned possibilities of deeper visual experiences from a new exploitation of the typographic material itself. Typography was for the first time seen not as an isolated discipline and technique, but in context with the ever-widening visual experiences that the picture symbol, photo, film, and television brought. They called for clarity, conciseness, precision; for more articulation, contrast, tension in the color and black and white values of the typographic page. They recognized that in all human endeavors a technology had adjusted to man’s demands; while no marked change or improvement had taken place in man’s most profound invention, printing-writing, since Gutenberg. -

THE GRAPHIE LATINE MOVEMENT AND THE FRENCH TYPOGRAPHY MANUEL SESMA PRIETO Associate professor, Facultad de Bellas Artes, Universidad Complutense de Madrid Introduction Most works dealing with the history of typography, many of Anglo-Saxon authors, reflect the period covered by the two decades after World War II practically dominated by neogrotesque typefaces. However, there were some reactions against this predominance, mainly from traditionalist positions that are rarely studied. The main objective of this research is thus to reveal the particular case of France, where there was widespread opposition to linear typefaces, which results into different manifestations in the field of national typography. This research wants therefore to situate the French typographical thought (which partially reflected the traditionalism of British typographical reformism led by Stanley Morison 1) within the history of European typography, and in a context dominated by the modern proposals arising mainly from Switzerland. This French thought is mostly shown in a considerable number of articles published in various specialist and professional press media, which perfectly reflected the general French atmosphere. -

Philipp Messner Hebrew Type Design in the Context of the Book Art Movement and New Typography "New Book Art" ("Neue Buchkunst") was the motto under which efforts were made, in the spirit of the English Arts and Crafts Movement, toward the revival of book and type design in turn-of-the-twentieth century Germany. This revival movement perceived itself as a reaction to the country's accelerated industrialization, especially since the founding of the Reich in 1871. The replacement of traditional craft by increasingly industrial production lines effected a variety of everyday consumer products, including the manufacturing of books. According to contemporary commentators this led to deterioration in the material and aesthetic quality of books. Similarly to other industrially manufactured products around the turn of the century, an expectation emerged for books to have a contemporary, functional, and materially sound form. This demand encompassed all aspects of the book, including printing types. Consequently, visual artists were now engaged to design typefaces. Early examples were still heavily influenced by Art Nouveau, but after World War I there was a turn to historical forms with a bias toward handwritten scripts. This was influenced largely by the English calligrapher and type designer Edward Johnston, who taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. His calligraphic method, which he based on old handwriting forms, became famous in Germany, in part thanks to the work of his pupil and translator, Anna Simons. Type design issues thus received a notably traditional treatment, defined above all by intensive engagement with historical forms. This tendency largely defined the personal styles of Franzisca Baruch and Henri Friedlaender. -
