Dravida parties were formed on the following basis

1.Base of eradicating caste.

2.Federalism later on became the base of the party.

 Before analysing the ideological positions , it is important to consider the historical background of these parties. In 1930's, Periyar, a radical thinker, started . The main objective of the party was to create a separate Dravidian country called as . However, there was rivalry between Periyar and the members and he started his own party called Dravida Kazhagam.

 After many years, Periyar married a woman who was more than 40 years younger than him. Consequently, there was a split in the party. Anna with his friend E. V. K . Sampath started a new party called Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. The important ideology of the party was to follow the ideology of Periyar. They wanted to abolish the caste system and fight for self respect. Karunanidhi joined the party at this stage.

 E. V. K Sampath left the party and joined Congress due to political reasons. Congress had been ruling then and tried to make as the official language of Indian. Anna, Kalaignar and other chief leaders of DMK rioted and protested all over the Tamil Nadu over the decision. As a result of which, the Congress Government gave up the plan. People recognized the hard work of DMK leaders. They elected the party in the next election. Anna become the first non-Congress chief minister for the of Tamil Nadu. He was the Chief Minister for two years.

 M.G.R., the leading actor then, was with Anna right from the time he started the party Infact, D. M. K used M.G.R.’s popularity to attract the people. In that sense, he was the pillar of the party. Anna died unexpectedly of cancer.

 When there was a question regarding the next Chief Minister, Karunanidhi used coup to attain that post. Though there were equal supporters of M.G.R., Karunanidhi become the party Chief and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. M.G.R. was given the post of Treasurer. M.G.R. was often ignored and his supporters were humiliated. M.G.R. accused Karunanidhi of misusing the party's fund and ordered him to submit the details of his expenditures.

 Most of Karunanidhi’s supporters were furious at this decision and demanded the immediate dismissal of M.G.R. from the party. Therefore, he was dismissed without any clarification. M.G.R. was dejected and started his own party called Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

 Even though the ideology of these two is the same, there are few fundamental differences between them. As regards to religion, DMK is perceived to be monotheistic following Anna’s beliefs while ADMK was not particularly adherent of this .
