Snapshot on sports

On Tuesday, the 7th August, we were fortunate to have a former student of MIS and a current Black Fern, Shakira Baker come in and speak to the students about her time here at MIS and her successes in her career as a professional women’s rugby player. She made special mention to Mrs Irene McKinstry and Mrs Raana Campbell who were her teachers at the time and said that while she was a student she loved taking part in all of the Super Sports and Kapa Haka. Shakira stressed the importance of securing a good education and not fully relying on sport as a career option as injuries can happen instantly which obviously can affect you financially. Shakira is a qualified maths teacher where her position at Hamilton Girl’s High School has been held open for her while she continues with her Black Fern’s contract. After addressing the school, Shakira had a Q & A session with the girls rugby team to inspire them ahead of their super sport tournament. Nga mihi nui ki a koe, Shakira! Thank you, Shakira, for taking time out of your ‘break’ to come in and speak to us all!

SUPER SPORT RUGBY On Wednesday the 8th August, our boys and girls rugby teams competed in the annual Super Sports Rugby tournament held here in Masterton at War Memorial Park (boys) and (girls). The day went really smoothly with some great games being played. Congratulations to Monrad Intermediate for taking out the boys competition with our MIS boys coming third. Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School won the girls tournament. Our girls team played extremely well with the extra motivation provided by a visit from current Black Fern, Shakira Baker.

Celebrating our successes:

NEWS FROM THE SCIENCE ROOM At our last school assembly three trophies were presented from the Science Room. The first is awarded for the class gaining the most ADMIRE points throughout the term. Students earn these points by presenting themselves in the correct uniform, bringing all the equipment needed to class for each lesson and following the ADMIRE values during the lesson. Bonus points are given to students who have completed their learning conversations about the previous lesson at home. The second trophy is awarded to the class that gains the best progress during the term and the third is for the student who makes the best progress over the term. During term two the year 8 students in the uneven numbered classrooms competed for these trophies. The WINNERS were as follows: Class with the most ADMIRE points - ROOM 13 Class with the best progress - ROOM 11 Student with the best progress - Asha Mitchell Room 15 Congratulations to our winners! In term three, the year 7 students in the even numbered classes are competing for the trophies. Please keep encouraging the conversations at home so students can share their new learning. ‘Trash to Flash’ entries

An inspired idea from Maddison Porter in Room 18 was to run a competition called ‘Trash to Flash’. Students were to upcycle household items to create another useable one. We were delighted with the number of entries and it was evident that a lot of time and thought went into the creation of these. Take a look for yourself…

Porotiti Tapara Patua

On Tuesday, the 24th of July a group of M.I.S girls were part of a group called Poi Porotiti Tapara Patua that has been organised by REAP house.

Each school was allowed a certain number of girls but Mr T is having problems with his eyesight so MIS ended up with 16 taking part instead of the 9 which we were allocated!! The first day was held here at our school hall.

The tutors are Pania Reiri Smith and her daughter Palais Douglas. While they are both teaching us poi skills we are also learning to stand strong as young women. Mrs V was frustrated with her left hand and was very jealous that Liliana got it straight away! Our next session is on the 25th September at Douglas Park school. By Perehina Edmonds
