Wairarapa College Newsletter

Volume 6, September 2017

Dear Parent/caregivers At the end of a very busy third term I would like to acknowledge the hard work of our staff and their efforts Upcoming Events on behalf of our students. Over the holidays many of them will be marking exams and preparing their final October reports. We know that in term four it’s going to be a very, very short but very busy time for our senior  Mon 16th - Term 4 students as they prepare for their externals. I would like to take this opportunity to stress the importance of these internal exams and of the feedback that our students will receive from their practice exams over starts the holidays. I encourage all parents and senior students to be working on a study programme to allow  Tues 17th - Kapa Haka our students to prepare themselves fully for the exams. We will be shortly sending out information and Cultural Day some links to websites to support that process.  Tues 17th/Wed 18th - I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank many of our parents, and again our staff and supporters, for First Aid course our winter sports season. The Tournament week highlight for me was being able to travel around and spend some time with most of our sporting teams. I was very impressed with the number of parents who  Tues-Thurs - Prefect had taken time out of their busy lives themselves to be present to support not only their own son or interviews daughter but the team as a whole. It was a great opportunity to be able to share in the Waicol spirit that is  Wed 18th - Sports so legendary out there amongst the sporting world and I have to say that although we couldn’t win every single game or competition we competed with great style, determination and wonderful team spirit. I Academy Y10 2018 trial would also like to congratulate our Netball girls who won their competition and made us very proud.  Thurs 19th/Fri 20th -

It will be an exciting time for us moving into term four. We are already considering our staffing asa WAIREAP Kapa haka growing school for 2018 and what this will mean for us. We are very encouraged by the uptake from our  Monday 23rd - community on the new Year Nine and other options we are making available to students in the school. We LABOUR DAY have had a very high subscription rate to Waicol on Stage and to the Digital Learning class. We also have recently made available on our website the information and application process for the Whanau Group HOLIDAY Class. With such high rates of interest its unavoidable that not everyone who has applied will be able to  Tues 24th - Media Fest engage with those classes next year. We do have robust processes to try and be as fair as possible in -ival, Rongohia te Hua; selecting those students who will become part of those groups, just as we have had in the last two years Cultural Assembly with our Sports Class at Years Nine and Ten. However, we know there will be some disappointment. I would like to encourage all of our students and parents to be aware of the fact that we do do a very good  Wed 25th - Prefect job with our teaching and learning across all of Year Nine and that the feedback that I receive frequently Workshop from our year nine parents and students is that they are enjoying the year.  Tues 31st - Sports We are also in the planning stages for the beginning of Stage 1 of the $10 million property upgrade. We Assembly will begin this over the Christmas holidays with an upgrade to the Pavilion at school in order to allow this to be be the main changing and also teaching facility for our Phys Ed classes as we embark on the upgrade November of the gym at the start of the year. We will be demolishing the existing classroom and some of the  Thur 2nd - Y9 Dairy changing room facilities and rebuilding these in a far more modern and higher spec fashion. We will also Field day be completing an upgrade of the interior of the gym further down the path in that project and that will include replacing skylights and re-polishing the floor and also improving lighting and heating. We are  Mon 6th - Senior Prize- looking forward to improving this very well used facility and we are excited that we will end up with a giving building which is much more modern, has integrated teaching facilities and which will be state of the art.  Wed 8th - Y8 We will also be upgrading our heating system over the Christmas holidays, moving to a new distributed gas Orientation Day system which should provide us with a much improved flow and warmer classrooms for 2018 winter.  Thur 9th - Wed 15th - We are also continuing on our consultation with the staff and our community around the rest of that Stage 1 build. We have had some major discussions around where we will focus that Stage 1. It looks likely at Junior exams this point that it will be focused around a redevelopment of the frontage of the school. Possibly the  Thur 9th - NCEA ex- Sutherland Block as a focus. The reason for this is to allow for the movement of vehicular traffic to either ams begin side of the main school campus, so that it no longer goes through pedestrian parts of the school. Another  Mon 20th - Teacher benefit to this will be the establishment of a bus bay in the school frontage. I see this as a vital part for us moving forward as a school. I am frequently very concerned about the school frontage on Pownall Street only day at the end of the day when we have so many of our students attempting to cross the road and buses  Mon 27th - Fri 1 Dec - parked along the road along with other traffic. On a wet day it becomes chaotic and I have been Brainwave increasingly concerned for the safety of our students. With this in mind I spoke recently to District Council representatives about the possibility of a crossing out the front of the school. Obviously December this is contingent upon us getting bus traffic off the road, however it is pleasing to note that they are  Tues 5th - Thur 7th - listening and this week we are doing an analysis of vehicular and pedestrian traffic with the assistance of Junior Activities the Council in order to begin the process of application. I am very grateful for their support and I look forward to working with them to come up with a solution which will mean that our students are able to  Fri 8th - Junior Prize- come to and from our main entrance in a safe fashion. giving; Junior reports

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our parents and our students the very best for the sent holidays. Shelley Power, Principal  END OF SCHOOL YEAR Uniform update Contract background The contract with New Zealand Uniforms Ltd (NZU), was signed on 16 June 2016 and this agreement will end on May 31 2019. There will be a review meeting every 12 months. Since then there has been conversations be- tween Bromleywear Clothing Ltd who supply us with all the girls uniform and KOOGA who supply us with sports teams wear. The responsibility for the purchasing of uniforms are with NZU who include in this decision making.

The exception is the 1st sports teams (Hockey, Rugby, Football, Netball), where the Sports Coordinator purchases direct from KOOGA their uniform, if required. These are distributed to the students when their subscription is paid. The uniforms are returned at the end of the year. The other teams purchase their uniform from NZU.

Bromleywear contract was signed on 3 April 2014 expires on 3 April 2017. (3-year contract). A decision will need to be made about whether to continue with this company or shift the supply to NZU. The Bromleywear contract gives us no rebate.

KOOGA contract was signed on 1 February 2014 and expires on 31 January 2018. The KOOGA contract gives us a 10% product rebate in the form of apparel and accessories based on the college’s annual purchases. At this stage the decisions about how to use the rebate is with the Sports Coordinator, Willie Schaefer (HOD PE) and Aa- ron Perkins (AP).

NZU has given us $5K for signing with them which is kept with them until we determine how to use it. Can be for uniforms or accessories or some items of choice. NZU also will give us 10% rebate on sales. How we use this rebate is determined by negotiation and needs of the school.

Uniform 2017 From a staff, student and parent survey as well as staff / student / SLT meetings, it was determined that no major changes to the uniform would take place, but some fine tuning to make our current uniform look consistently good.

Wairarapa College School Regulation Footwear for 2017

Sample photos of school regulation footwear are shown below

Please note that these will be the only style of footwear that is permitted from 2017 for the whole of models and have put together the expected sandals and shoes for 2017 for the whole school. Model United Nations Assembly On Wednesday 26th July, Wairarapa College hosted the Model United Nations Assembly for the Wairarapa Region. This meeting was coordinated by United Nations Youth, with four University of Victoria post graduate students travelling over to facilitate the day.

This is the third year WaiCol has hosted this event aimed at Year 10 students and, although the 50 students from WaiCol, Solway and Rathkeale had lots of fun debating various topics, there were serious discussions related to the global issue of Children and Armed Conflict. Each student represented a different country in the Assembly and was re- quired to present the perspective of that country, with consideration of its Government, economic position, military power and current state of peace or conflict.

It was a steep learning curve for the students in terms of the process of how a formal meeting is conducted but really the outcomes for the students lay in the development of their thinking and reasoning skills. Questions posed included: Should children be allowed to fight in an army? Is it possible for child soldiers to be reintegrated into the community? How can national governments protect its children in times of conflict? Why are children some of the most vulnerable citizens in areas of conflict? Their ideas were challenged and they had to be able to produce evidence to justify their opinions. These are life skills and can be used in many other subject areas beyond the Social Sciences.

‘WALA - Spirit of Ghana’ Performance During last period on Friday 8th September, Junior students were treated to a performance from touring group ‘WALA - Spirit of Ghana’. This group were really entertaining and they displayed their dance and percussion skills with great enthusiasm. They kept the students’ interest up with their interactive style - some students and staff even became performers themselves! A great way to end the week.

Martinborough Jazz Festival Earlier in the term the WaiCol Jazz groups were lucky enough to be part of ‘Fresh Jam’ college jazz workshop run by well-known jazz musician Rodger Fox at . This culminated in an evening concert highlighting many styles of jazz. A few days later, WaiCol band Mojo, plus Chev Fraser who joined the group, performed to a large audience in The Village Café in Martinborough. These events were part of the Jazz in Martinborough Festival - a great experience for our students.

Harlequin Intercollegiate Theatresports Competition This annual competition for Wairarapa colleges was held over two nights in early September. Congrats to Senior and Junior teams who both won their division. The Senior team members were Jackson Burling, Brooke Robertson, Dylan Major and Lizzie Bysouth. Ash Ferguson, Adrian Johnson, Leopold Thomsen, Gabby Hughes and Sam Williams-Clegg made up the Junior team. Another Junior team consisting of Grace Hancox, Anisha Satya, Anjalina Persico and Sophie Ferguson were placed third in their group. A great experience for all students – well done.

Masterton Food Bank Cans, cans and more cans carried by students in mufti poured into Wairarapa College last week.

In what is becoming a tradition for the annual winter Mufti Day, instead of bringing a gold coin donation students were asked to bring a non-perishable item of food to help the Masterton Food Bank. Organised by the Student Council, an overwhelming amount of food was donated with nearly 1000 cans and packets of food up for collection in the morning from different group classes.

Student Council member and deputy head girl Molly O’Hagan says bringing a can is so easy for students and will be a great boost for the food bank.

Level 3 Music Recital Our Year 13 music students performed to their families and other supporters last week during an early even- ing recital. Guests were invited for refreshments beforehand and were seated around tables on the Hall stage to watch the performances. This created a more intimate setting and worked well. Consisting of vocal and instrumental items, the seven students performed a selection of classical and contemporary pieces. HOD Music, Belinda Carey is very proud of the students achievements and congratulated them on the progress they have made through their WaiCol years. The Jazz Band closed the event by performing three pieces. Every item was a pleasure to listen to.

1st XI Girls Hockey: proudly sponsored by RIVAL Wealth Tournament Week was a challenging week for our team, which is reflected by our final placing of 26th. Although we did not finish where we would have liked the girls did put together some fantastic play during the tournament. However as we all know any losses during tournament week can send you plummeting through the placings. This season has given us a lot of laughs along the way, great tunes & amazing van singing…all of which will be missed over the summer break. Seniors we wish you well in your new ventures & hope that you continue to play the high level of hock- ey you have shown us every year. To those trialling for 1sts next year put in the effort with fitness over summer & let's hit the ground running in 2018! Last but definitely not least we would like to thank RIVAL Wealth who has been a fantastic supporter us for the last two sea- sons, we are eternally grateful for your continued support of our team! Mel Kiernan

2nd XI This season the 2nd XI girls played in the Wellington competition and started the year playing grading in R2. They won all games by 5+ goals and moved up to compete in the R1 grade. While playing in R1 they dominated all teams they came up against in the round robin. After a hard fought semi-final win of 1-0 they were ready for the final. The final was an extreme- ly hard fought game as both sides wanted the win. At the full time hooter it was 1-1 so into the first part of extra time. Extra time was golden goal, down to 9 players a side it was end to end action. Another hooter and a 2 min breather for the players, now down to 7 a side the whole game opened up and was fast end to end. The final hooter rang and it still a stale- mate. So came down to penalty strokes! Confident and calm the girls had been practicing strokes for the last 3 weeks and knew what they needed to do. They had the first shot and Grace saved it; our turn and in it goes. Grace also saved the next shot and we scored our second. Their 3rd player shoots and misses the entire goal, we shoot and score the winning goal. Waicol wins the grade and promotion to compete in P3 next season. The team played a total of 12 games, scored a total of 83 goals and conceded only 6. Our MVP for the season was Sophie Saba and our Most Improved Player was Ana White- head. Rob Barnes

3rd XI Waicol 3rd X1 had a gradual improvement over the season. They had a few changes to overcome, but never the less they got stronger and more determined over time, the result being finishing the season with a good win! Well done, girls! Our MVP was Caitlin Reedy and our Most Improved Player was Olivia Horsbrugh. Jo Cundy

Colts This year it was awesome to have a team of Year 9 girls, who were enthusiastic and keen to go. We saw a huge improve- ment over the season and received a lot of positive comments from other teams about home much we had devel- oped. Their skill level improved but their confidence and self-belief was awesome. At the beginning of the season they set a team goal of making the top 4 (no mean feat considering there were two 1st XI’s and a 2nd XI in their grade) and they achieved it. They lost out in the semi-finals to the eventual winners of the grade, St Matthews 2nd XI. The girls should be extremely proud of what they have achieved in their first year at this level. Nadine and I have enjoyed every minute of this journey with the team. Our MVP was Georgia Higinbottom and our Most Improved Player was Jenna Lawson. Catherine Smith

1st XI Boys Hockey: proudly sponsored by PROPERTY LAW The 1st XI Boys Hockey have again this year been sponsored by Property Law. We are very grateful for their ongoing support. This year we have seen a substantial change in player personnel with 7 new players into the squad. We took an extended squad to pre-season hockey tournaments at Clareville and Hamilton to develop players for the future for Wairarapa College. This provided some very good grounding in basic skills and establishing combinations for the season. The first competition we were involved in was the Wellington Premier 1 Boys Secondary Competition grading round. We went through our pool unbeaten with wins over Paraparaumu College (5-3), Scots College (1-0), Rathkeale College (3-1) and our semi- final game (6-3) win over . We went into the final quietly confident against hot favourites Paraparaumu College. Playing at home the boys stepped up and came away with a 4-1 win, winning the Dominion Post 1st Round Cup, defending this trophy from last year. The following week was the start of the main competition with a full round robin of games. First up was Scots College win- ning 2-0. Next up was Rongotai College and came away with a 2-2 draw. Next up was HIBS, whilst we dominated the game we just couldn’t score, going down 0-1. We next played Wellington College and did not get into game and lost 2-6. We then played and won 5-0. Our next game doubled as our annual game against Rathkeale College, down 0-2 at half time we came back to draw 2-2 and retain the Annear Family Cup. A disappointing round for us and it meant in our last round robin game we needed to beat Paraparaumu (away) to qualify for the top four. Unfortunately whilst the boys played well went down 1-2. It meant we were playing off for places 5-8 in the Wellington Competition. With 3 games to go in the regular season we wanted to finish on a good note to go into tournament week with some confidence. We won our first two games 7-2 vs Rongotai and 3-0 against Heretaunga to then play Rongotai again, for 5th & 6th. It ended up being a high scoring game drawing 6-6. We ended up the winner on a coin toss, finishing the season in 5th place. During the regular season we also played two inter school games winning away against Napier Boys High 4-2 and drawing with Paraparaumu 3-3. Continued over …... Rankin Tournament We headed to Hamilton for tournament week to play in the Rankin Cup / India Shield Tournament. We went into the tourna- ment with mixed form, but we played well in our pool games winning all 3 with results as follows:- vs Hastings Boys High 2-1, vs Heretaunga College 9-0, vs Kings College 2-1, meaning we qualified top of our pool and remained in the Rankin Cup Competi- tion, which we were really pleased as it was one of our main goals this year. In the cross over game we were up against one of the tournament favourites (and eventual winners) Christ College. This was a step up and whilst we lost 1-4 the score did not reflect the game the boys played. We then played Timaru Boys High School losing 2-4. Next up was Westlake Boys High School again losing a close game 2-3. We therefore ended up playing Auckland Grammar for 15th & 16th place losing 4-5 in the dying moments. This has been a year of rebuilding the team. The results were mixed and some of the results ‘should have or could have’ been different. The team competed well throughout the year and as you can see from the overall results below we are still com- peting at a very high level in NZ Secondary School hockey. Some of those draws only need to be wins and outcomes would have been quite different. Many thanks go to our coach Kerry Hare who put in a lot of time and effort in bringing a new group of players together and moulding them into a good playing unit. Thanks again to the parents of the boys. Your support again has been simply outstanding and to have such a high percentage of you at tournament week speaks volumes to the interest you take in the players and the sport. Thanks again parents it has certainly made my role as manager a lot easier to do. A ‘BIG SHOUT OUT’ to our sponsor Property Law. Their support is gratefully received. To our team members in their last year at school – Wills, Alex and Frank all the best for your future endeavours, you have all been great contributors to the team for the time you have been involved with the 1st XI. The team as follows:- Wills Taylor (Capt), Alex Hare, Frank Dickson, Ethan Presow, Ollie Bunny, Rob Winchester, Ethan Butcher, Jonty Tomlinson, Caleb Nunn, Perry Lewis, Jonty Hooper, Jeremy Thurston, Craig Pankhurst, Josh Nelson, Sam Silvester. Representative honours: Sam Silvester & Craig Pankhurst (Wairarapa U15), Wills Taylor (Capital U18) Season’s statistics: Played 24, won 13, drawn 4, lost 7; Goals for 78, Goals against 53 Hamish Taylor

2nd XI For the first time the 2nd XI Boys hockey team entered the Wellington Hockey Secondary Competition. The boys started the year playing in the R3 Grading division. The played a total of 4 games, winning all four games. They were then promoted to the R2 grade for the rest of the season. The boys won their seven pool games to finish top of the table. On Friday the 25th of August they played 1 in the final winning 6-1 being promoted to the R1 Grade for 2018. All together the boys scored 113 goals throughout the season and only conceded 2. As coach I would like to thank all the boys for their effort and commitment throughout the season and also Fiona Nelson who did a great job as manager of the team. Special thanks to Mr Mike van Woerkom as TiC of Hockey for all the planning and organising throughout the season. Our MVP was James Nelson and our Most Improved Player was Ben Faulkner. Jaco Le Roux

3rd XI 2017's 3rd XI hockey had a great season. We began with a mixed team, some whom had played hockey for many years, others who had only just had a taste of hockey, many of whom were new to secondary hockey. Whatever their past experience, the boys all had a terrific attitude which lasted throughout the whole season. Practices and games alike were enthusiastically attended. Likewise our families got in behind and supported with transport and sideline encouragement till the very last game. The boys took on the new ideas their coach Regan Fricker brought them, which helped them step up to the level of play expected at the secondary hockey level. We had mixed results for the games, some wins, draws and loses. Overall the 3rd XI developed their skills, understanding and teamwork well throughout the season, putting them in a great position to continue representing Wairarapa College hockey over the coming years. The team would like to thank everyone involved with organiz- ation and assistance, especially Mr M Van Woerkom. Our MVP was Ethan Gubb and our Most Improved Player wasLuke Presow. Jane Hennessy, Manager

4th XI The 4th XI hockey team have had a really successful season winning the College Combined competition, beating Makoura Col- lege 2-0 in a very intense game. They came together at a tough time after a mid-season upset, it really showed how strong they were as a team. I would also I like to thank the parents for being there and supporting us through a long hard season. And one more thanks to Mike van Woerkom- the stuff you do behind the scenes is great and thanks for an awesome season for Wai Col hockey. Our MVP was Sam Marsh and our Most Improved Player was George Searle. Regan Fricker
