DISTINGUISHED SERVICE RECOGNITION

ADMINISTRATOR – DON HOLWERDA TSSAA is proud to recognize Don Holwerda as its distinguished service honoree as an administrator. Don Holwerda is currently the Director of the Southeast Center and the President Emeritus of Chattanooga Christian School. Don was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 20, 1948 and currently resides in the St. Elmo area of Chattanooga. He graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, with a Bachelor of Arts and from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, with a Master of Science in Education. Don served as the Principal of Sibley Christian School in Sibley, Iowa, from 1970-1974. He then moved to New Holland, South Dakota, where he was the Superintendent of Dakota Christian High School from 1974-1981. Don served as the President of Chattanooga Christian School from 1981-2009. He originally was hired to help the school consolidate onto the main campus at Charger Drive and continues on at CCS in his current role as President Emeritus. In his career at Chattanooga Christian School, Don has been very active in coaching both the high school and the middle school golf teams. Don has been a part of many organizations in his career. Some of the roles that Don has had are as follows: President of Christian Schools International, Executive Secretary of the Southeast Region of Christian Schools International, President of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga, and as a Rotarian in the Downtown Chattanooga Club. Don was also the Jefferson Award Recipient for Community Service. Don and his wife, Phyllis, have three grown children, Michael Holwerda, Michelle Stamper, and Jason Holwerda. He is also the proud grandparent of Jackson Holwerda, son of Jason and Jessica Holwerda, and Ava Stamper, daughter of Matt and Michelle Stamper. Don and Phyllis attend First Presbyterian where he is an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church of America and an ordained deacon at the church he attends. TSSAA is proud to recognize Don Holwerda for his work, dedication, and the many contributions he has made to student-athletes through his work as a high school administrator in Tennessee.

COACH – DARLENE FAIRLESS Darlene has been involved in education and coaching for the past thirty-two years. She is currently the Head Softball and Volleyball Coach at Peabody High School in Trenton. Coach Fairless graduated from Sardis High School in Henderson County in 1973. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Union University in Jackson, in 1977, and her Master’s in Physical Education, from Bethel University in McKenzie in 1994. Darlene began her career in education at Trenton Rosenwald Middle School where she taught P.E./Health and served as Peabody’s Assistant Girls Basketball Coach from 1979-1985. She became the Head Girls Coach at Peabody in 1985,and served in that capacity for nine years. In 1991, Coach Fairless started a softball program at Peabody and advanced to the state tournament in their first year of existence. She has made it to the state tournament on two other occasions during the past eighteen years and has won over 250 games. In 2009, she started a Volleyball program and advanced to the sub-state round in year one. In addition to her coaching/teaching duties, Darlene has instructor certifications in water aerobics (which she teaches regularly at the YMCA), American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and Safety, TWRA Hunter and Boating Safety, and is a Level II ACCT Ropes Course Facilitator. Darlene and Mike, her husband of 34 years, enjoy a wide variety of sports and travel to a different major league baseball stadium every summer. They have a beautiful black and white English springer spaniel, named CJ. TSSAA proudly salutes Darlene Fairless for her tremendous contributions to the student-athletes in Tennessee.

OFFICIAL – ED “JABBO” HESSEY TSSAA is proud to recognize Ed “Jabbo” Hessey as its distinguished service honoree as an official. Ed Hessey received his B.S. Degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation, with a minor in Biology, from Middle Tennessee State University. He began his career in education at The Oak Hill School in Nashville in 1970. At Oak Hill, he served as Physical Education teacher, athletic director, and football, boys’ basketball, and boys’ and girls’ track coach. From The Oak Hill School, he went to Brentwood Academy as football, basketball, and track coach from 1986-1990. Then from 1990 through 2005 “Jabbo” was Science and Physical Education teacher at Battle Ground Academy, where he also served as Physical Science & Earth Science Instructor, Middle School Athletic Director, and Physical Education Instructor from 1990-1998. During the 2005-2006 school year Jabbo was head high school golf and track coach at Ensworth High School. From Ensworth, he returned to Brentwood Academy in 2006, where he continues today in the capacity of Science Instructor, as well as golf and track coach. In 1975 he started and developed city-wide track and field competition for student-athletes in the sixth grade and under, using the facilities at Harpeth Hall, Brentwood Academy, and Montgomery Bell Academy. The number of participating athletes grew from approximately 50 up to 200 per meet. In 1970 Jabbo became a TSSAA certified track official and has served as a referee and assistant starter at various TSSAA track meets for many years. He has served as Director of the TSSAA Track & Field Championships for the past several years and is invaluable to the state office in that capacity. Jabbo and his wife, Dana, reside in Brentwood, Tennessee and have two children and three grandchildren. TSSAA is proud to recognize Ed “Jabbo” Hessey for his work, dedication, and the many contributions he has made to student-athletes through his work as a TSSAA track official.

CONTRIBUTOR – ANDREW LIPSCOMB TSSAA is proud to recognize Andrew Lipscomb as its Distinguished Service Award honoree in the Contributors category. Andrew graduated magna cum laude from with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He was a five time qualifier to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination and advanced to the USA Mathematical Olympiad three times. Andrew’s service with TSSAA began at the TSSAA State Wrestling Tournament while he was still a student at The Baylor School. Andrew has been involved in the scoring of both the state dual meet tournament and the individual tournament. He is currently conducting research for TSSAA on the feasibility of an alternative tournament scoring system for individual wrestling tournaments. In addition to wrestling, Andrew has been involved with the development of the football playoff scenarios posted annually on the TSSAA website during the last week of the regular season. Andrew has always enjoyed watching high school sports of any kind. It is not uncommon for Andrew to travel to other states around the country to watch a state championship in another sport. He has attended a variety of championships around the country in his quest to find competition at the highest level. A.F. BRIDGES SCHOLARSHIPS

The A.F. Bridges Awards Program announced in the winter issue of the TSSAA News the 27 Divisional Finalists for 2009-2010. Also, the nine schools that won the A.F. Bridges’ State Award of Excellence were recognized. For the fifth consecutive year, the TSSAA Board of Control earmarked $27,000 toward a scholarship fund to recognize one outstanding student athlete from each of the 27 schools that were Divisional Finalist for the A.F. Bridges Awards. Each school was asked to recognize a person who represents the essence of good sportsmanship and citizenship. The criteria for this nomination was set by each

individual school. TM Each nominee was asked to provide a complete resume as well as a paper describing what participation in activities has meant to them. EAST TENNESSEE - CLASS A JOSH BOLES, Rockwood High School He will graduate from Rockwood High School in May. He participated in football and basketball and has participated in sports since an early age. By participating he has learned life skills such as discipline, respect, and teamwork. Josh has been a member of FCA, the Annual Staff, and the Pep Club.

DUSTIN HEIDEL, Wartburg High School He carries a 4.0 GPA and will graduate from Wartburg Central High School in May. He is an honor student who participated in football all four of his high school years. He is a member of the Beta Club and the National Technical Honor Society. He has been awarded the Content Area Reading Academic Award, the National English Award, and both the German and Biology Academic Awards at some point during his high school career. He is an avid bluegrass musician, and is a member of several different choral groups.

SAMANTHA MEADE, Washburn High School An honor student at Washburn High School who is a member of the National Honor Roll, the United States Achievement Academy, and was named a “Who’s Who Among All-American Scholars”. She was a member of the Lady Pirates basketball team for three years. She was a member of FCCLA, SADD, FCA, Beta Club, and served as a Grainger County Youth Leadership participant. She served as President of SADD during her senior year, and President of FCA in her Junior year.

EAST TENNESSEE - CLASS AA ROY ANDERSON, Chattanooga Christian School He has participated in soccer, football, and basketball at Chattanooga Christian. He served as Co-Captain of the soccer and basketball teams. He took on a leadership role with the “I am a Friend” program and in the Salt and Light youth group program. He was presented the Academic-Persistence Award by the faculty, as well as the Malone Scholarship. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and will graduate from Chattanooga Christian in May.

AMANDA CUTTING, Knoxville Catholic High School She is an honor student who carries a 3.94 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, and has made both the Principal’s List and Honor Roll. She participated in varsity soccer and basketball, serving as captain in both sports. She is a member of the Red Cross Club, and has worked with the Children’s Hospital at its Camp for Children with Disabilities. She also worked for the Knoxville Football Club’s summer camps. She plans to graduate in May and go on to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy.

TYLOR HALL, Polk County High School He will graduate from Polk County High School in May. He ran cross country all four of his high school years. He was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America for three years, and went to the state competition each year. He is an eagle scout, and has the highest class average in Geometry. Upon graduating, he plans to attend Tennessee-Wesleyan University and obtain a degree in Pre-Veterinary Medicine. From there, he plans to attend the at Knoxville, where he will major in Veterinary Medicine.

EAST TENNESSEE - CLASS AAA JEBEDIAH PEAVLER, High School Has been a member of the concert choir at Cherokee, and is a member of the Tennessee All State Honor Choir. He has received numerous honors and recognitions for his musical talents. He was a member of the Chiefs football team for three years, and in his Senior year he participated on the competition cheerleading team. He has received the IMAC Character Team Award for good sportsmanship and exemplary character on the field, community, and school.

CLARA STORY, Greeneville High School She will graduate from Greeneville High School in May. She has received the Principal’s Award in English in both her junior and senior years. She has also received the Most Improved Award in academics in both the ACT Prep Class and Geometry. She played on the varsity softball and basketball teams, and was co-captain of both her senior year. She received numerous All-Tournament and All-Conference awards in both sports. She volunteers with the Greene County Youth Council, and would like to play sports at the collegiate level.

DAKOTA COGDILL, Sevier County High School He will graduate in May with honors, having achieved the All “A” Honor Roll, and carrying a 4.0 GPA. He has participated in football, basketball, and track at Sevier County High School, and has compiled numerous awards for his hard work, dedication, and leadership. He is a member of FCA, BETA Club, National Honor Society, DECA, and served as the Student Government Vice-President his senior year. He plans to obtain a degree in Education so he can become a teacher and coach.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE - CLASS A ANNA and CHRISTINA CURTNER, Forrest High School Both girls are involved in several different activities at Forrest High School. They are both on the Student Advisory Board and are members of Student Council, Beta Club, and FCA. Both girls have also participated on the Lady Rockets basketball team. Anna is the 2011 Salutatorian, and was named to the All-District and All-District Tournament teams in basketball. Christina is the Class Valedictorian, was a Girls State Delegate, and was voted “Most Athletic” in the Senior Class. She, too, was named to the All- District and All-District Tournament teams in basketball.

CAMERON BLACKBURN, Frank Hughes School He will graduate in May in the Top 10 of his class. He was selected as Mr. Frank Hughes High School, and was chosen by his peers as “Most Likely to Succeed”. He served as Beta Club President his senior year, was a Boys State Representative as a junior, and was the Class Chaplain all four years. He started on the basketball team all four years and received numerous achievements for his efforts, including joining the 1,000 point club. He has been awarded the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his commitment to serving others in the Clifton community.

TRENT THOMASON, Santa Fe High School He will graduate with honors from Santa Fe High School in May. He was selected to and attended Boys State, was nominated to Student Council on Policies in Education, and was voted “Most School Spirit” by his peers. He was a member of both the basketball and football teams and participated in trap shooting as well. He is a member of FCA, Beta Club, FBLA, and was a Student Council Class Representative each of his four years. He has assisted the local nursing home, as well as his church in numerous volunteer activities.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE - CLASS AA AMY MAKSIMOWICZ, Christ Presbyterian Academy She has been a member of the Varsity Soccer team for the past four years, and the Varsity Track team for three years at Christ Presbyterian Academy. She won numerous awards in soccer, and broke two school records in track. She is a member of both the National Honor Society and the National Arts Honor Society. She has made the A/B Honor Roll the last three years and is a Quill and Scroll Award recipient. She has participated in a work study at CPA and has been a journalism photographer for the yearbook.

ERIN FORD, Franklin Road Academy She has participated in softball, volleyball, and basketball at Franklin Road Academy. She was an All-Region selection in softball and volleyball, and was named to the State All-Tournament team in basketball. She has served as Student Council Vice-President, has made the Quarterly Dean’s List, and scored the highest average in Latin/Greek Derivatives. She has been a member of the FRA Service Club, the Omega Activity Club, Spanish Club, and the Spiritual Life Committee. She has done a lot of volunteer work in her community, and has traveled on numerous mission trips.

CHELSEA LANCASTER, Hickman County High School She will graduate in May from Hickman County High School, where she made the Honor Roll all four years. She played softball through her junior year, when her career was cut short due to an injury. She played on the golf team all four years, and placed in the top five in the district three out of four years. She made it to the TSSAA State Golf Championships twice. She was a member of HOSA her senior year. She plans to play golf at Martin Methodist College, where she will pursue a degree in Physical Therapy.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE - CLASS AAA EVIN EDENS, Father Ryan High School She is an honor student at Father Ryan High School, who carries a 4.14 weighted GPA. She is an avid golfer, who has participated on the golf team at Father Ryan. She came in 4th place in the TSSAA State Golf Championships in 2009, and 3rd place in 2010. She averages a 37 for 9 holes, and a 72-78 for 18. She has served as an 8th grade retreat leader and a Parochial League Junior Golf volunteer. She has also participated in Relay for Life, Room in the Inn, and as a volunteer at Donelson Health Care.

DMITRIY CARRIGAN, Riverdale High School He carries a 3.84 GPA and will graduate from Riverdale in May with an Honors Diploma. He has taken honors classes in all four of his high school years, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is a member of the Riverdale swim team, the USA NAC swim team, and the EXCEL USA swim team. He has broken over eight school swim records, and has received 16 medals over four years at the County Meet. He plans to attend Emory University on a swimming scholarship, with hopes to become an Orthopedic Surgeon.

TYLER TODD, Rossview High School He has participated in both football and wrestling at Rossview High School. He has received numerous accolades for his hard work and success in both sports. He is a member of the International Thespian Society, Drama Club, Pep Club, and FCA. He also participates in Young Life, HOSA, and the Rossview Talon Vision. He was given the Faculty Leadership Award and has volunteered in numerous capacities, such as youth league coaching and an English tutor at the high school.

WEST TENNESSEE - CLASS A TYLER JONES, Greenfield High School He carries a 3.9 GPA, and is ranked 5th in his graduating class. He has played basketball, football, and baseball all four of his high school years. He was team captain of each of those in his senior year. He served on the Student Council and Beta Club all four years. He was also a member of FBLA, FFA, and worked on the yearbook staff. He was voted a Class Favorite and Class Officer by his peers all four years, and received the Michael Maness Attitude Award and the Yellowjacket Club Award. He plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin and obtain a degree in Engineering.

KELSEY CARR, McKenzie High School She is a Distinguished Scholar with a 3.96 GPA, and ranked 3rd in her graduating class. She participated in Varsity Basketball and Softball all four of her high school years, and received numerous accolades in each. She was selected for Youth Leadership in Carroll County and was a State Finalist for the TSBA Student Recognition Award. She was an Honor Banquet attendee and Academic Letterman all four years. She is a member of Student Council, serving as an officer for three years; Beta Club, Leo Club, Key Club, FCA, Future Teachers of America, M-Club, and DECA. She was also in the Science and Spanish Clubs and the McKenzie Maniacs. She has done numerous volunteer work in the McKenzie community.

BEAU JACKSON, Peabody High School He is a Peabody Scholar carrying a 3.96 GPA, and graduating 6th in his class. He has participated on the varsity baseball team all four years, and was a member of the golf team for one year. He has served in the Beta Club, Pep Club, Junior Rotary, FCA, and the Art, Science, and History Clubs while at Peabody High School. Most of his involvement comes through Student Council, in which he was elected President his senior year. He is heavily involved with Student Council on a National level, attending conventions and workshops all over the country. He was chosen for the American Legion Citizenship Award and was named Outstanding Senior.

WEST TENNESSEE - CLASS AA TaRISHA LAKE, Bolivar Central High School She will graduate from Bolivar Central High School in May, and achieved the “All A’s Honor Roll” her senior year. She was a member of the cheerleading squad all four years, and was also a member of the NAACP and the Beta Club. She has had the privilege of performing at pep rallies and cheering her teams on at numerous TSSAA State Championships. She has volunteered with Relay for Life and tutors students in all subjects after school and during the summer.

MATTHW ROELOFS, Evangelical Christian School He will graduate from ECS in May with a 4.0 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Beta Club, both achieved through high academic standards and leadership. He served as the Commissioner of Religious Affairs and on the Student Council his senior year. He is on the Honor Council, the Servant Leadership Institution, and was voted a Class Delegate by his peers. He played basketball and participated in track and cross country while at ECS.

MATTHEW LITTLETON, Gibson County High School He serves as Class President at Gibson County High School, where he will graduate in May. He is a member of the Beta Club, as well as FCA, where he served as President his senior year. He has served as a D.A.R.E. role model, and has tutored high school students. He received the World History Award and the Will Orr Character Award for his outstanding academic achievements and leadership. He was a member of the football team all four years, and served as team captain his senior year.

She is President of the Student Council and is a Memphis City Schools Student Advisory Board member. She served as captain of both the volleyball and tennis teams.

SCARLET GABLE, Munford High School She will graduate from Munford High School in May, and plans to attend to obtain a Nursing degree. She made the High School Honor Roll all four years at Munford and was selected to represent her school at Volunteer Girls’ State. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and HOSA. She participated on the volleyball team and won numerous awards for her accomplishments. Her jersey was retired at Munford— the first female at the school to receive this honor.

VIANICA WARREN, Overton High School She will graduate from Memphis Overton in May. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and serves on the Junior Ring Committee. She took part in the MIAA Manager’s Workshop and received her CPR and First Aid certification. She has been a member of the Overton Cheerleading Squad all four years, and served as captain her senior year. She also participated in tennis and track and field her sophomore and freshman years, respectively. She performs dance and has helped volunteer for the Fight/Drug Free Teaching program.

Winners and finalists of the 2011 Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards were honored at the conclusion of each classification’s championship game. A statewide committee of sportswriters selected winners based on performance during the 2010-2011 regular season. Academics and character were also taken into consideration. High school head basketball coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists. The presentation of the Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards for Division II were on Saturday, March 5 at Allen Arena on the campus of .

The presentation of the Miss Basketball Awards for Division I, Classes A, AA, and AAA were given during each championship awards ceremony for each class on Saturday, March 12 at the Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. She is a three-year starter for the Lady Wildcats who averages 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game. She shoots 55% from the field and is a 79% free-throw shooter. She was named the 2011 District 12-A MVP. Carly has been named to the All-District and All-Region teams for three consecutive years. She has scored over 1,500 points in her career at Wayne County.

MALCOLM SMITH - Clarksville Academy 6’5”, senior, forward. He is a four-year starter for the who averages 23.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 1.5 steals, and 1.6 assists per game. He shoots 67.6% from the field, 31.3% from behind the arc, and is a 67.1% free-throw shooter. He has been an All-District and All-State selection each year since he was a freshman. He has also been named the District All-Tournament team each year of his high school career and was selected to the Region All-Tournament team three times. Last season, Malcolm was the MVP of the Class A state tournament and was a finalist for the Mr. Basketball Award.

CLASS AA MACKENZIE SELLS - Livingston Academy 5’10”, senior, guard. She is a three-year starter for the Lady Wildcats who averages 15.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. She shoots 48% from the field, 38% from three-point range, and 64% from the free-throw line. She has been named to the All-District team each year of her high school career and was named the District MVP as a junior. She was an All-Region selection last year and was named the Region 4-AA MVP as a sophomore. Mackenzie has scored over 1,500 points in her career and has over 500 career rebounds. KEDREN JOHNSON - Marshall County High School 6’4”, senior, point guard. He is a four-year starter for the Tigers who averages 28 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals per game. He shoots 55% from the field, 35% from three-point range, and 75% from the free-throw line. He has been named the District 12-AA MVP three times and was a finalist for the Class AA Mr. Basketball Award in 2010. Kedren is the school’s all-time leading scorer with more than 2,200 career points. He also holds

She is a three-year starter for the Lady Warriors who averages 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and four steals per game. She shoots 60% from the field, 33% from three-point range, and 66% from the free-throw line. She has been named to the All-District team three times and was selected as the District 7-AAA MVP both as a sophomore and junior. She has scored over 1,500 points in her career and has over 850 career rebounds. Last year, Shacobia was named the MVP of the Class AAA state tournament and was named the Player of the Year by . ANDRE HOLLINS - White Station High School 6’3”, senior, guard. He is a four-year starter for the Spartans who averages 25 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals per game. He shoots 50% from the field, 40% from three-point range, and 88% from the free-throw line. He has been named to the All-District team three consecutive years and to the All-Region team twice. He was selected to the TSWA All-State team twice. He has been named to the All-Tournament team at the state tournament the past two seasons. Andre has scored over 2,200 points in his career at White Station.

DIVISION II - A MARJORIE BUTLER - Webb School of Knoxville 5’8”, junior, point guard/wing. She is a three-year starter for the Spartans who averages 20.3 points, six rebounds, 3 assists, and 3.2 steals per game. She shoots 48% from the field, 34% from three-point range, and is a 70% free-throw shooter. She has scored over 1,200 points in her career and was named the Region MVP this season. Marjorie was named to the All-Region and All-State teams both as a freshman and sophomore.

JOHN ROSS GLOVER - University School of Jackson 6’4”, junior, forward. He is a three-year starter for the Bruins who averages 22.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. He shoots 60% from the field, 28% from three-point range, and 64% from the free-throw line. He has scored over 1,700 points in his career at USJ and was a finalist for the Division II-A Mr. Basketball Award in 2010.

DIVISION II - AA CHADARRYL CLAY - Girls Preparatory School 5’8”, junior, point guard. She is a three-year starter who averages 17.2 points, four rebounds, six assists, and 3.1 steals per game. She shoots 36% from the field, 30% from behind the arc, and 67% from the free-throw line. She has been an All-Region selection all three years of her high school career and was named Region Player of the Year this season. Chadarryl was an All-State selection last year and she surpassed the 1,000 career point milestone mid-way through her junior season.

CONOR McDERMOTT - Ensworth High School 6’8”, senior, post. He is a four-year starter for the Tigers who averages 14.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. He shoots 54% from the field and has scored in double-figures 24 times this season. Conor has averaged 19 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks over his last three regular season games. He is a 2010-11 McDonald’s All-American finalist.
