Sound and Vision: Intermediality and American Music Frank Mehring and Eric Redling 1 The medium of music represents a pioneering force of crossing boundaries on cultural, ethnic, racial, and national levels. Critics such as Wilfried Raussert and Reinhold Wagnleitner argue that music more than any other medium travels easily across borders, language barriers, and creates new cultural contact zones (Raussert 1).

  • Biography -- Printable Version
Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled.

  • The Next Boston Band by Michael Fertik
The Next Boston Band by Michael Fertik “Good Morning, Boston! It’s one minute past the hour, and you are listening to the Sunday Morning Zoo with Elephant-Man and Danny on 95.3-The BOX, Boston’s Critical Hit Rock! Very exciting news, Danny. It is official: Steve Tyler of Aerosmith and Ric Ocasek of The Cars are winging their way into town this afternoon to emcee the kick off of the Battle of the Bands at the Lansdowne Street Music Hall tomorrow night.” “Is that right, Elephant-Man? This news came out of nowhere!” “Yes! Mayor Menino will be joining our show tomorrow afternoon. He has officially made the Battle of the Bands part of his new Boston Revolution Month, which is highlighting all the great things about Boston. Boston is a rock and roll town, but it has been a particular sore point with this mayor—and a large number of our city’s residents, let me tell you—that we have had no big bands, no really big bands, come out of Boston since the 80’s. We have great clubs in this town, and great talent, but no one has broken out like Aerosmith or The Cars. Now things are looking up. The Mayor is out to change all that. Tyler and Ocasek, two hardcore Boston natives, have been talking about doing something to restore Boston’s rock-ominance for years now, so the Mayor invited them back to Boston to judge the Battle of the Bands this year. Well, they’ve gone and turned the dial up a few notches themselves and made this into a huge deal.

  • Psaudio Copper
Issue 23 JANUARY 2ND, 2017 Happy New Year, and welcome to Copper #23, and 2017! As I look back at 2016...well, Popeye put it best: httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h97kbv4mbsc Really, what more is there to say? Right up to the last minute, the Reaper was ripping creative souls from our midst. Let's hope for a better new year. In this issue, we start with Richard Murison explaining the convoluted concept of convolution, then go to Dan Schwartz for a tale of musical evolution ; Professor Schenbeck takes a look at the best musical releases of that annus horribilus, 2016; Duncan Taylor presents another killer local group, The Railsplitters ; and Woody Woodward takes a last, twisted look at Christmas music (no toys this time, but there is an extra-special performance). I pay homage to yet another friend and colleague who passed away this year, Ken Furst, and explore what readers and industry folk would've wanted as an audio gift, if they could just have one precious piece of gear back again. Jim Smith is back with more on the ACK Attack; Ken Kessler is back also, with another batch of artists who really don't deserve to be forgotten; and in our final feature, Darren Myers has an update on the "CNC" DIY phonostage. This issue's reader system is a particularly attractive one, and our issue closes with yet another gorgeous image from Paul McGowan. I wish all the best for our readers in the New Year. Next issue I'll be in CES-recovery mode, and may or may not be up to writing about it.
