One reason is that morphological characters of harlequin frogs are often difficult to interpret, making species delimitations difficult. Molecular analyses (DNA barcoding, phylogeny) may be helpful but sampling is hampered as most of the more than 100 Atelopus species have undergone severe population declines and many are possibly extinct. We processed mitochondrial DNA (12S and 16S rRNA) of 28 available ingroup samples from a large portion of the genus’ geographic range (Bayesian Inference, Maximum Likelihood). Our samples constitute a monophyletic unit, which is sister to other bufonid genera studied including the Andean genus Osornophryne. In contrast to previous morphological studies, our results suggest that Osornophryne is neither sister to Atelopus nor nested within it. -

This species has been recorded at 23 locations of Colombia, 14 of which are reported in this work. In addition, we reported the first record for the Department of Valle del Cauca, southern Colombia. Based on the points of occurrence, we estimated the potential geographic distribution of this species through the maximum entropy algorithm, and the model prediction showed a good performance. The model shows that The Cordillera Central provides the higher habitat availability for the species occurrence, with no geographical barriers that hinder the spread of the species. We analyzed the stomach contents of 14 females. We identified 73 Arthropoda prey and nine Nematoda prey. Coleopterans and isopods were numerically and volumetrically the more important prey, respectively. We found a positive and significant correlation between snout-vent length (SVL) and head width (HW). Our data indicate that the species is a generalist/opportunistic feeder with a sit-and-wait strategy for obtaining prey. -

Frostius pernambucensis and F. erythrophthalmus are cryptic bufonid spe- cies recognized mainly by the iris color: yellow in F. permambucensis and red in F. erythrophthalmus. However, field studies showed that the iris color of F. erythroph- thalmus could vary between yellow and red. To improve the recognition of these species we described the advertisement call of Frostius pernambucensis and Frostius erythrophthalmus and we tested if call characteristics are influenced by temperature, male size and perch height. We also report on a physical interaction between two males of F. pernambucensis and the associated vocalization, suggesting that F. per- nambucensis has not a territorial call or encounter call. -

Abstract We describe a new species of Andean toad, Osornophryne angel sp. nov., based on speci- mens collected at Páramo del Angel, province of Carchi, Republic of Ecuador. This new species is a medium-sized toad diagnosed from other species of Osornophryne by having granular skin with glandular ridges and tubercles and by the presence of a projected papilla or a proboscis at the tip of the snout. Osornophryne angel sp. nov. exhibits strong sexual dimorphism, females are larger and have a projected papilla instead of the male’s extended proboscis at the tip of the snout. Considerations on the sexual dimorphism are important to evaluate intra and inter-specific variation in Osornophryne, and lack of its understanding has resulted in identification errors. -
