History of Juneteenth • June 19th is known as “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day,” or “Emancipation Day.” • On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger made the announcement that the war had ended, and that enslaved people were free. This came two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. • Juneteenth was used as an occasion for gathering lost family members, measuring progress against freedom, and inculcating the rising generation with the values of self-improvement and racial uplift. • In the 1870s, a group of former slaves pooled $800 together through local churches to purchase 10 acres of land and create Emancipation Park to host future Juneteenth celebrations in modern-day Houston. • Juneteenth flag designer, L.J. Graf, packed a lot of meaning into her design. The colors red, white, and blue echo the American flag to symbolize that the enslaved people and their descendants are Americans. • The Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles, of Coahuila, Mexico also celebrate Juneteenth. Other countries, such as South Korea, Nigeria, and Afghanistan also celebrate Juneteenth.
