Olmecs: Where the Sidewalk Begins By Jeffrey Benson Western Oregon University An In Depth Look at the Olmec Controversy Mother Culture or Sister Culture 1 The discovery of the Olmecs has caused archeologists, scientists, historians and scholars from various fields to reevaluate the research of the Olmecs on account of the highly discussed and argued areas of debate that surround the people known as the Olmecs. Given that the Olmecs have only been studied in a more thorough manner for only about a half a century, today we have been able to study this group with more overall gathered information of Mesoamerica and we have been able to take a more technological approach to studying the Olmecs. The studies of the Olmecs reveals much information about who these people were, what kind of a civilization they had, but more importantly the studies reveal a linkage between the Olmecs as a mother culture to later established civilizations including the Mayas, Teotihuacan and other various city- states of Mesoamerica. -

The main purpose of this report is to disseminate a set of photographs that constitute part of the primary documentation of epi-Olmec monuments, with particular emphasis on those bearing epi-Olmec texts, and of a few monuments from a tradition that we suspect replaced it at Cerro de las Mesas. It does not include objects that are well-published elsewhere, nor does it include two objects to which we have been unable to gain access to. Its first aim is to marry a trustworthy photographic record and the web presence of FAMSI for the purpose of making widely available a large percentage of the corpus of monuments belonging to this cultural tradition. -

Preclassic ceramics at four of these, in addition to Palenque, are considered. The Middle Preclassic is well represented at all sites, a primary subdivision being the appearance of waxy wares. The non-waxy to waxy shift, recalling Xe-Mamom relationships, is more pronounced than changes marking the Middle to Late Preclassic transition. Initial Middle Preclassic similarities tend to be stronger outside the Maya Lowlands than with other Lowland Maya sites, and a few ceramics also have non-Maya Early Preclassic correspondences. Depending in part on the survey site under consideration, Olmec/Greater Isthmiam features and Chalchuapa-like treatments are noted. Usually, however, relationships are observed on a modal rather than typological level, perhaps reflecting the reworking of external influences from varied sources and the occasional retention of earlier features as archaisms. From the 1941 Excavations, 16 Obsidian Speci- Mens Were Collected and Are Now in the United States National Museum
III. TECHNOLOGY AND GEOLOGIC SOURCES OF OBSIDIAN ARTIFACTS FROM CERRO DE LAS MESAS, VERACRUZ, MEXICO, WITH OBSERVATIONS ON OLMEC TRADE' Thomas R. Hester, Robert F. Heizer and Robert N. Jack As a part of the continuing study of Mesoamerican obsidian being con- ducted at the University of California, Berkeley, we have recently analyzed a small collection of artifacts from the site of Cerro de las Mesas, Vera- cruz, Mexico. The site is located near the Rio Blanco, south of the city of Veracruz (see map in Stirling, 1941:283). It was partially excavated by a National Geographic Society-Smithsonian Institution expedition in 1941. The major discoveries at the site were briefly published by Stirling (1941); the ceramics, a remarkable Jade cache, and other pieces have been described by Drucker (1943, 1952, 1955). From the 1941 excavations, 16 obsidian speci- mens were collected and are now in the United States National Museum. Un- fortunately, this material lacks detailed provenience data. .Drucker (1943:5) refers to the occurrence of "prismatic flakes" in the deposits at Cerro de las Mesas; these apparently were not saved or have been lost, as no examples of this artifact form are in the collection. Technological Analysis Of the 16 specimens in the collection, 14 are polyhedral blade cores, one is a large worked blade and the last is an unmodified waste flake. Cores. These specimens have been sorted according to categories est- ablished by Hester, Jack and Heizer (1971) in their study of Tres Zapotes obsidian cores. The Cerro de las Mesas cores are only briefly described here, since they conform closely to those described from Tres Zapotes. -
"La Venta Culture" After Their Main Site, but Thename "Olmect-Prevailed (Covarrubias, 1957:52-53)
1 THE MAIN THEMES OF THE " OLMEC" ART TRADITION Tillie Smith Graduate Student, Anthropology University of California Of all the great art of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, perhaps the most baff- ling and controversial is that which is called "Olmec." The name comes from Aztec historians who had legends of Olmecs, people believed by them to be native to the "rubber lands," where are now the Mexican states of Veracruz and Tabasco. One legend was that they were very ancient, the creators of art and science-- another legend, that they flourished shortly before historical times, and so on. Their great antiquity was recognized, and an atltempt was made to call them the "La Venta Culture" after their main site, but thename "Olmect-prevailed (Covarrubias, 1957:52-53). It is usually written with quotation marks to dis- tinguish it from any other Olmecs, but as we are discussing the prehistoric La Venta Olmecs only, we may dispense with the quotation marks. This paper is an attempt to establish a criterion for the art style that is called Olmec, by describing in words and drawings its chief elements, ritual and decorative, that seem to set it off in a class by itself. It will also try to show that some features of many of the large stone sculptures, in the main, do not occur often enough to be classed as Olmec, especially since some of these features are well-known in other art styles. An attempt will be made also to explain the presence of these intrusive elements, the possible reasons for the Olmec's choice of themes; and to present a reasonable hypothesis for their early florescence. -

This would be the first book of such kind in Russia. We saw our task in preparing the textbook on the first Mesoamerican culture with a helpful list of literature, lots of pictures and photos from old and recent publications, for a wide range of students in humanities. Resumen El objetivo de este proyecto es la publicación de un libro de texto especial dedicado a la cultura olmeca y su lugar en la secuencia cultural en Mesoamérica antigua. Este será el primer libro de tal tipo en Rusia. Nuestra tarea en la preparación del libro de texto sobre la primera cultura mesoamericana consiste en aprovechar la literatura, así como incluir muchos cuadros y fotos de publicaciones viejas y recientes para la amplia variedad de estudiantes en las humanidades.
