  • Q and a with Michele Smith
Q and A with Michele Smith Should older girls who have never played softball before still tryout? What challenges will they face? Yes. You don’t always have to start a sport at a young age to be successful. I started playing softball when I was seven years old but I didn’t start to pitch until I was a sophomore in high school. The big thing is that if you are passionate about a sport, don’t be afraid to give it a go. One of the challenges that you are going to face is that your skill level will be a lagging behind in comparison to other players. Especially if you have friends playing ball, it is a good idea to get involved in the sport. Of course, you are going to be a little bit behind in your skills. But, that can always be made up by working really hard and on your own. Practice isn’t just limited to the hour or hour and a half that your coach says it is time for team practice. If you go out and practice improving your skills on your own, typically you can improve really quickly. Don’t be intimidated by other players because you can easily catch up with them by working extremely hard. How did you develop your pitching skills so quickly since you started at a later age than most girls? I spent a lot of time practicing on my own. In high school I also played field hockey and basketball, but I always set time aside to improve my pitching.

KyCIR works with WFPL and other news partners across the region to produce and distribute original reporting in the public interest. Our journalism affects you, your neighborhood and your commonwealth. Our mission is to protect society’s most vulnerable citizens, expose wrongdoing in the public and private sectors, increase transparency in government and hold leaders accountable, all in accordance with journalism’s highest standards. We are members of our community. And our work is funded and supported by our community. “KyCIR is an extremely important asset to the state and nation. Honesty, integrity, and evidence-based reporting are essential values for society; without them we disintegrate. Thank you KyCIR for your role in our lives.” — Alison Sommers and Richard Lewine, Louisville, KY 1 A Note From The President Revealing. Responsive. Relentless. We came up with that tagline for KyCIR years ago, but it resonated more than ever in 2020. The team dedicated itself to responding to what was happening before us all — the COVID-19 pandemic and the movement for racial justice after Louisville police’s killing of Breonna Taylor.

PHELPS* INTRODUCTION There are few things in today's society that garner more attention or have a larger significance on everyday life than sports. Avid fans follow their favorite teams not only during their respective seasons, but search the Internet and sports page in the off-season to find even the slightest bit of information. Popular holidays are interwoven with various sporting events, such as football on Thanksgiving Day or baseball on the Fourth of July.1 Some events even attract their own celebration, such as Super Bowl Sunday. If a city's local team is fortunate enough to win a championship, a large-scale parade is usually held to honor the players and coaches.
