Transmedia superhero franchises and cultic management Aaron Taylor, University of Lethbridge Abstract Through a case study of The Avengers (2012) and other recently adapted Marvel Entertainment properties, it will be demonstrated that the reimagined, rebooted and serialized intermedial text is fundamentally fan oriented: a deliberately structured and marketed invitation to certain niche audiences to engage in comparative activities. That is, its preferred spectators are often those opinionated and outspoken fan cultures whose familiarity with the texts is addressed and whose influence within a more dispersed film- going community is acknowledged, courted and potentially colonized. These superhero franchises – neither remakes nor adaptations in the familiar sense – are also paradigmatic byproducts of an adaptive management system that is possible through the appropriation of the economics of continuity and the co-option of online cultic networking. In short, blockbuster intermediality is not only indicative of the economics of post-literary adaptation, but it also exemplifies a corporate strategy that aims for the strategic co- option of potentially unruly niche audiences. Several scenarios of vampire-human co-existence are drawn and mathematical models are applied to test whether vampires could have existed amongst us today and under what provisions. This research tackles a ridiculous subject using serious mathematical tools. It analyzes what is further called “The Stoker-King model” (based on Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and Stephen King’s “’Salem’s Lot”), “The Rice model” (after Anne Rice’s “Vampire where H denotes humans, V denotes vampires and VS denotes vampire slayers.     Readings - a journal for scholars and readers Volume 3 (2017), Issue 1 The Hybrid Turn: What the Figure of the Vampire Hunter Tells Us about the Humanities in the Twenty-First Century Jonathan Elmore and Rick Elmore, Savannah State University and Appalachian State University Our essay grounds the epistemological task of the vampire hunter in Stoker’s Dracula and then explores the changing representations of these figures and their task in later media including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight, Blade, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, and Breaking Dawn. Traversing the realms of logic as well as representation and faith, we trace components of the epistemological task of the vampire hunter that demand a challenge to deeply held beliefs about the nature of reality and the horizon of what is possible and impossible. We close with the exciting provocation such a critique offers a (post) humanities. Introduction Two seemingly unrelated trends have been underway for the past twenty odd years: the state of the humanities in American higher education has continued to erode, and there has been a marked increase in the appearance of vampire narratives in American fiction and popular culture. We argue, quite simply, that these trends can be meaningfully connected. More specifically, throughout this piece, we demonstrate the pedagogical resonances between a certain traditional paradigm of the vampire hunters, typified in the figure of Abraham Van Helsing, and humanities professors. This paradigm figures the relationship between humans and vampires as one of antagonism, in which, humanity's response to vampires can only be one of fear and violence.
