A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the nationalQuick stage, the Facts Manhattanville and College Athletic Contents Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2009-10 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Seven different programs earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2009-10 – a total bettered by only 13 Division III schools – and two Valiant teams ( and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including confer- ence championships for the baseball, men’s golf and men’s hockey pro- grams. Three Manhattanville teams (men’s hockey, women’s hockey and women’s soccer) also received national rankings over the course of the year, the most in a single school year since 2004-05. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2009-10 as well. A program-record four Valiants – A.J. Mikkelsen and (men’s hockey), Katie Little (women’s hockey) and Dan Fiorito (baseball) received All-American accolades, while an incredible six players were named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned two conference Rookie of the Year awards and a school-record 49 All-Conference honors. The only coach the program has ever known, Levinthal started the Valiants from scratch before the 1999-00 season, had Manhattanville in the ECAC West Championship Game in his second season, and today has Manhattanville perennially among the top programs in the country. A strong recruiter, teacher and leader, Levinthal’s teams have been over .500 every season since the debut year of 1999-00 and have gone to four NCAA Tournaments. The two-time ECAC West Coach of the Year has also led the team to two ECAC West regular-season titles (2005-06 and 2006- 07) and four ECAC West Tournament Championships (2004-05, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2009-10) in the last six seasons alone. Aside from the successes on the ice, Levinthal’s teams also thrive in the classroom and in the community. His Valiant teams perform nearly 1,000 hours of community service each year and routinely have a cumulative grade point average above 3.20. The Valiants consistently rank among the ECAC West leaders on the Academic All-Conference Teams, and Levinthal’s teams have also been profiled in several publications for their charitable work in Westchester County. Levinthal’s teams have truly excelled in the last six seasons, posting a combined 116-28-17 (.773) record and winning two ECAC West regular-season titles, four ECAC West Tournament championships and advancing to four NCAA Tournaments. The team has also been ranked number one in the nation in two of those seasons and has spent 128 of the last 138 weeks ranked in the top 15 in the country. After a one-year absence, Levinthal led Manhattanville to its fourth ECAC West Tournament title in six seasons in 2009-10, helping the Valiants reach the 20-win plateau for the fourth time in program history on the way to a 20-6-1 record and an eighth-place finish in the USCHO.com national rankings. On the way to the title, the Valiants set an NCAA Div. III record by winning 17 consecutive games on the road and posted their eighth straight top-two conference regular-season finish. After the season, Manhattanville had a program-record five players honored by the ECAC West, including Player of the Year Mickey Lang, Rookie of the Year Scott Hudson and Defensive Player of the Year Dillon Henningson. Perhaps more impressively, Lang and A.J. Mikkelsen were both named AHCA All-Americans and Lang was tabbed as a Sid Watson Award finalist, marking the first time in program history that more than one Valiant was named to an All-American team in a season. The previous season, the Valiant leader got all that he could from the 2008-09 team, placing second in the ECAC West Conference with a 16-4-5 overall record that resulted in a 10th-place ranking in the final USCHO.com Div. III poll of the season. On an individual level, Levinthal was named the conference’s Co-Coach of the Year for the second time and he also guided Chris Trafford to the ECAC West Player of the Year award. Trafford was also named an AHCA All-American and was a finalist for the Sid Watson Award as the Division III National Player of the Year. In 2007-08, Levinthal led the Valiants to an 18-7-3 overall record and a No. 3 national ranking in the final USCHO.com poll of the season. The team won the ECAC West Tournament Championship for the second consecutive season and reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. Perhaps Levinthal’s more impressive coaching effort came in 2006-07, when a supposedly rebuilding Valiant team went the first 23 games of the year without a loss, maintaining the nation’s number one ranking for 11 straight weeks and advancing to the program’s first Frozen Four with a 5-3 quarterfinal win at home against Babson College. Aside from the team achievements – including the program’s first ECAC West regular-season and tournament titles in the same year – several of Levinthal’s players received unprecedented accolades following the season. Senior goaltender Andrew Gallant won the Sid Watson Award as the AHCA National Player of the Year, becoming the first Valiant student-athlete in any sport to win a National Player of the Year award, while Mills also achieved another first for the program by earning ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors. In addition, Gallant was named the USCHO.com Player of the Year, ECAC West Player of the Year and was an AHCA first-team All-American and All-Conference selection, while Levinthal was recognized as the ECAC West Coach of the Year for the first time and was a finalist for the National Coach of the Year award. Levinthal’s team the prior year was nearly as successful, starting the 2005-06 season 10-0-0 on the way to the school’s first ECAC West regular-season championship. Jason Murfitt also recognized as the ECAC West Player of the Year, beginning a stretch of four Valiant conference players of the year in five seasons. Levinthal’s 2004-05 team began his recent run of success with the longest winning streak in program history to start a season, going 14 games without a loss or tie to open the year. The Valiants took over the top spot in the USCHO.com National Poll for the first time in program history on Jan. 17, 2005 of that season and won the ECAC West Tournament Championship for the first time in program The Levinthal Ledger history with an upset victory over top-seeded Utica College. In his first season on the Valiant bench, Manhattanville won its fourth ECAC West Conference Tournament championship in the last six seasons and set a new NCAA Div. III record by winning 17 consecutive road games. He guided the team to 18 postseason appearances, including 14 consecutive postseason berths between 1993 and 2006, and 15 winning seasons. The Hamilton mentor also led his team to the 1998 ECAC East Conference Tournament championship, the first conference championship in program history. At the school, 11 100-point scorers and four All-Americans passed by under his watch, as well as former NHL goaltender Guy Hebert, who played for Grady in the late 1980s. Grady picked up his 300th career victory on November 27, 2007 with a 2-0 win over SUNY Potsdam, making him the 17th NCAA Division III men’s hockey coach to reach the career milestone. Grady also served as a physical education professor at Hamilton during his tenure in Clinton. In addition to his duties with the Valiant men’s hockey team, Grady also serves the department as Assistant Business Manager. Assistant Coach Arlen Marshall First Season • Manhattanville ’10 After a stellar four-year career on the ice for the Manhattanville men’s hockey team, Arlen Marshall ’10 makes the transition to the bench and begins his first season as an assistant coach with the Valiants in 2010-11. Marshall will play a role in all day-to-day aspects of running the Valiant men’s hockey program, including recruiting, scouting, game and practice preparation, and academic monitoring. A two-year captain of the Valiants, Marshall had one of the most prolific careers in Valiant history. Built in 1930 on the site of Westchester’s Playland Amusement Park in nearby Rye, N.Y., and the former practice home of the NHL’s , the Ice Casino features a 205’x80’ ice sheet with both balcony and ice-level seating, along with spacious, state-of-the- art locker rooms, training facilities and a newly renovated player lounge. The facility underwent a major facelift before the 2007-08 season, getting new boards that include Valiant signage, glass, benches and a net covering the circum- ference of the rink. Manhattanville’s many championship banners also hang from the rink’s rafters to honor the great tradition of both the men’s and women’s programs. On game days, Playland’s balcony seating fills with rabid Manhattanville fans, who have made the Ice Ca- sino one of the most difficult places to play in the nation in recent years. The Valiant men have boasted a .773 winning percentage in eight seasons at Playland and have lost more than three home games in any season only twice. Valiants in the Community The mission of Manhattanville College – to educate ethically and socially respon- sible leaders for the global community – promotes extensive service to the local community. Manhattanville’s student-athletes, including members of the men’s hockey team, are among the school’s most active members in furthering that mis- sion through community service. As with every season, the Valiant men’s hockey team will perform over 1,000 hours of community service annually, working with a variety of different groups throughout the season and offseason. This year, Manhattanville has already worked at the 2010 Burke Rehabilitation Center Wheelchair Games (pictured at right) in White Plains, N.Y., and partnered with the women’s hockey team to take part in the annual Tunnels to Towers Run in New York City, and will continue to take part in service activities throughout the season. Manhattanville’s players and coaches are also active in the local youth hockey community as well, coaching and helping to run youth programs in Greenwich, Conn., Rye, N.Y., and New Rochelle, N.Y., among other areas. The Valiants also donate game tickets to youth hockey teams in the area as well as to local fire departments and police stations. 2010-11 Manhattanville Men’s Hockey Media Guide 27 Strength & Conditioning/Sports Medicine Strength & Conditioning Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Strength & Conditioning staff will maximize the athletic performance of Valiant student-athletes by using the most effective and efficient training techniques to compete injury free at the highest level of competition. The aim is to instill a sense of self-discipline, respect and responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal of a team championship. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom floor of the Athletic Department hub, Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines that are available for student-athlete use both in and out of season as well as during the summer. In 2007, Manhattanville College opened the new Richard A. Berman Student Center in the center of campus that includes a first-class workout area for the general student population; as a result, Healthworks is now the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes.
