  • Opening Convocation of Five Towns College
...Rolland G. Smith Continued Prior to joining CBS, Rolland Smith worked for Metromedia Television in Washington, D.C., as White House and Capital Hill correspondent and was subsequently transferred to New York, as co-anchor of the WNEW- TV Ten O’Clock News, where he also served as an accredited United Nations Correspondent. In 1968, Smith reported from the front lines of the Vietnam War during the height of the Tet Offensive. His war zone coverage took him from the Mekong Delta to the DMZ, for Corinthian Broadcasting. Among his other memorable assignments, Smith has the distinction of being the first journalist to accompany the US Geological Survey Team inside Mt. St. Helens after the volcano erupted. He covered the visit of Pope John Paul II to Ireland the United States, and had an exclusive televised conversation with the Pope in Rome during coverage of a Vatican Consistory. Smith anchored separate town meetings with President George H.W. Bush and President Bill Clinton, and anchored the international broadcast of the 1985 Live Aid concert, among so much more. For his many contributions to society, culture, and for representing the broadcast journalism profession with honor and distinction, Five Towns College will bestow the Doctor of Humane Letters (D.H.L) honoris causa, upon Rolland G. Smith at the 44th Opening Convocation of Five Towns College. CORY ROONEY is a Grammy Award Winning American songwriter, record produc- er, and C.E.O. of Cory Rooney Group. • Michael Jackson the Man and the Message
Michael Jackson The Man and the Message Getting to know his greatest concerns through his own words “I really do wish people could understand me some day.” Michael Jackson The following text consists of quotes that are taken from radio and TV interviews, speeches and public statements, poems and reflections, song lyrics, handwritten notes and letters. The earliest quote is from 1972, the latest from 2009. Since the media rather concentrated on questions in terms of gossip and scandal, this compilation should provide an opportunity to get a more complete impression of Michael Jackson's message and his most important concerns... L O V E There are two kinds of music. One comes from the strings of a guitar, the other from the strings of the heart. One sound comes from a chamber orchestra, the other from the beating of the heart's chamber. One comes from an instrument of graphite and wood, the other from an organ of flesh and blood. This loftier music [...] is more pleasing than the notes of the most gifted composers, more moving than a marching band, more harmonious than a thousand voices joined in hymn and more powerful than all the world's percussion instruments combined. That is the sweet sound of love. Human knowledge consists not only of libraries of parchment and ink – it is also comprised of the volumes of knowledge that are written on the human heart, chiseled on the human soul, and engraved on the human psyche. Food is something we all need physically, but so is love, the deeper nourishment, that turns us into who we are.

  • From a Young Age Sabrina Carpenter Already Had a Clear Command on What She Intended to Do with Her Life: She Wanted to Sing
From a young age Sabrina Carpenter already had a clear command on what she intended to do with her life: she wanted to sing. “We have video of me in my kitchen. I was so young and was singing ‘God Bless America’,” the effervescent Carpenter recalls. She was too little to even pronounce all the words correctly, but she knew the performance felt right. “I know a lot of people don’t know what they want to do when they’re that young,” she says in a grand understatement, “but I had a pretty good idea and my heart was pretty much set on it.” In the years since, Carpenter, 15, has never wavered in her desire and ambition. While her talents have expanded into acting— she plays the rebellious Maya Hart on Disney Channel’s “Girl Meets World” and is starring in the upcoming Disney Channel original movie “Adventures in Babysitting” — music remains her first love. Her passion is evident on her full-length album debut, Eyes Wide Open. The Hollywood Records release is an upbeat collection of uplifting, infectious, well-crafted pop songs, many of them co-written by Carpenter, and all delivered in her expressive, appealing soprano. Because of her TV shooting schedule and other commitments, the album developed over a long and creative arch during which time Sabrina was able to nurture her artistic and musical point of view. “I learned a lot about what I like and more about myself and my capabilities,” she says. “And what I’m able to do with my voice.” Songwriting also took her on a path of discovery.
