This current newsletter is inænded to update all readers of the most significant developments since then. Of course, those of you who take British Wildlife magazine may already be awarg tlrough my 'rWildlife Notes', of some of the information contained herein. The success ofthe scheme relies upon your endeavours and, once again, I am indebted to the many of you who have submitted records and also to Paul Pearce-Kelly, Rachel Jones and Bryan Pinchen for their contributions on rare species. SUMMARY OF HIGHLIGHTS In comparison with recent years, the summer of 1998 was disappointing, although parts of southern England did have some reÍlsonably warm and dry weather during August and early September which is probably the most important period for the breeding success of many species. It was, perhaps, not surprising that there were fewer records submitted during 1998 as compared with the previous yàr but, even so, there were still several thousand which involved a total of 349 new l0hn squares (including 68 post-1970 refinds). Of these, 195 (including 23 post-1970s) were for 1998, including first ever records for Roesel's Bush Cricket, Metrioptera roeselii, in the Channel Islands, Long-winged Conehead, Conocephalus discolor, in Cambridgeshire and Lesnets Earwig, Forfcula lesnei,in Worcestershire and also a national first for this latter species in lreland. Additionally, we had the most northerly yet records for Lesser Marsh Grasshopper, Chorthippus albomarginqtus. -

ARTICULATA 2015 30: 63–80 FAUNISTIK First overview of the south Albanian Orthoptera fauna Michèle Lemonnier-Darcemont, Gellért Puskás & Christian Darcemont Abstract The Orthoptera fauna in southern Albania is still largely unexplored. In the sum- mer and autumn of 2014, several entomological field trips were conducted in various habitats from the coast to the mountains. A total of 87 species were noted. Among them were some first records for the region. Zusammenfassung Die Heuschreckenfauna im Süden Albaniens ist noch weitgehend unerforscht. Im Sommer und Herbst 2014 wurden daher von der Küste bis in die Berge mehrere entomologische Exkursionen in verschiedenen Lebensräumen durchgeführt. Ins- gesamt konnten 87 Heuschreckenarten nachgewiesen werden. Darunter waren auch einige Erstnachweise für die Region. Introduction Southern Albania has been under-sampled for Orthoptera; the rare papers found are not recent (MURRAJ et al. 1971, SALFI 1937), and moreover, the structure of populations could have changed over the past decades. Faunistic studies in such areas are of high conservation concern. They are an important prerequisite for further studies on insect ecology and/or habitat management. During 2014, we performed an extensive field study in southern Albania. The mountain chain ar- rangement, under the influence of northern and southern biogeographic areas, is very particular, and these mountains are potentially a hot spot for Orthoptera (KENYERES et al. 2009). Our study was aimed to analyse the Orthoptera popula- tions in different sampling sites, the causes of their richness, the micro-climate influences and the possible threats. This paper presents the list of species found, including some new species (for science and/or the country), the structure of the populations (dominant species etc.), the habitat and the interpretation of this in- formation to provide status and trends in each locality. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Authors analysed 33 supraspecific taxa of Palaearctic Platycleidini with unarmed prosternum, most of them hitherto considered genera or subgenera of Platycleis and Metrioptera. For each of them they give a short description of the characters revealing the correct classification of males and females. Then, they propose a more consistent classification, when both males and females of a supraspecific taxon are clearly distinct, they should be elevated to distinct genera. On the whole, they propose to classify Palaearctic taxa into 32 genera, for which they propose a key based on the characters used in this paper and illustrated by 140 photographs. Additionally, they describe the following new genera: Sardoplatycleis for Platycleis galvagnii from Sar- dinia, Amedegnatiana for Parnassiana vicheti from Mediterranean France; and the following new species: Platycleis buzzettii from Iran and Squamiana bressani from Uzbekistan. For each genus they list all the species known, pointing out also those which, for scarcity of specimens, have been tentatively classified within that genus and that probably should be better assigned to another one. -

ACOUSTICAL COMMUNICATION IN ARTHROPODS1 By RICHARD D. ALEXANDER Museum of Zoology and Department of Zoology, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan Prior to the early 1950's, the study of arthropod acoustical behavior had been in a relatively stable state for a long time. Although hundreds of papers had been published on sound production and reception in insects, they had dealt chieflywith the morphology and physiology of devices that were either known or suspected to produce or respond to sounds [see bibliography (55)}. Only a few critical experiments on acoustical behavior had been performed (66, 68, 96, 113, 128-130). An abundance of review articles and books (13, 14, 37, 49, 50, 65, 111, 112, 123, 125, 131, 142) had failed to bring about any sustained growth of interest comparable to that enjoyed more recently by the field. The accelerating development of electronic recording and analyzing equipment following World War II ushered in a new era, attracting a large number of workers into many aspects of the field of animal communication. In the course of 10 or 15 years, several hundred papers were published on arthropod acoustics, including fivebooks (24, 51, 76, 85, 150) and an impres sive array of review articles (1, 3, 6---8, 43-45, 54, 77, 124 and others). The recent volume on acoustical behavior of animals edited by Busnel (25) de votes 285 pages to articles dealing solely with arthropods by six different authors, and insects are prominently discussed in several of the other chap ters. Nearly 500 genera of arthropods are mentioned, including representa tives of 15 orders of insects. -

This combined terminology has potential for use in automated identification systems, evolutionary studies, and other use cases where the synthesis of bioacoustic traits from the literature is required. An example implementation has been developed for the BioAcoustica platform. It is hoped that future development of controlled vocabularies will become a community effort. One danger is that of legislating prematurely and clumsily for hypothetical future requirements; the other is a too easy-going and long-sustained attitude of laissez-faire arising from wishing to let the mud settle before trying to penetrate the shadows of often chaotic and obscure usages. The response of the scaly cricket Pseu- Coastal insects may be highly susceptible to population loss due to domogoplistes vicentae (IUCN Red Data List - Vulnerable) in the UK catastrophic inundation events. At two locations on the east coast of the to storm surges in 2013/2014 has been studied by Professor Karim UK (nature reserve and naturists’ beach), the response of the Nationally Vahed and reported in Sutton et al. (2017). Acoustic parameters of these 16 species affiliated to 8 genera (Anterastes, Apholidoptera, Gampsocleis, Parapholidoptera, Pezodrymadusa, Psorodonotus, Bradyporus and Saga) have been described for the first time in this study. Acoustical analysis showed that song char- acters are species-specific in the genera Saga and Psorodonotus. On the other hand, we could not find big differences among species of the genus Pezodrymadusa and Parapholidoptera castaneoviridis species-group. Orthopteran insects as potential and preferred preys of the Red- footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus) in Hungary. – Ornis Hungarica 23(1): 48–57. Abstract Orthopterans play an important role in Red-footed Falcon diet, however, most studies focus only on its qualitative food composition, and less on quantitative composition and prefer- ences of the taxa identified as prey. During the present research, an extensive orthopterological investigation was carried out in the Red-footed Falcon study area, Vásárhelyi Plain (SE-Hungary) between 2006 and 2008. Grass- hoppers were sampled in their main habitats by sweep netting and pitfall trapping, and orthopterans were identi- fied in the food remnants collected from the nests, both artificial and natural ones. 26 species were detected dur- ing the field works, 18 species from the food remnants. Altogether 32 species were identified. Prey preference values for all species for each year were calculated. More than two thirds of the identified preys were Decticus verrucivorus, and nearly 20% were Tettigonia viridissima. Other common prey species were Melanogryllus de- sertus, Platycleis affinis, Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa, Calliptamus italicusand Gryllus campestris. Based on the prey prefe rence analysis, the most preferred species was Decticus verrucivorus with extreme high values, and the other preferred ones, overlapping with the previous list, were Platycleis affinis, Bicolorana bicolor, Tettigonia viridis- sima, Calliptamus italicus and Roeseliana roeselii. These results may help in the development of Red-footed Fal- con-friendly habitats through the application of habitat management favourable for the preferred prey species.
