JAZZ WRITING? I am one of Mr. Turley's "few people" who follow The New Yorker and are jazz lovers, and I find in Whitney Bal- liett's writing some of the sharpest and best jazz criticism in the field. He has not been duped with "funk" in its pseudo-gospel hard-boppish world, or- with the banal playing and writing of some of the "cool school" Californians. He does believe, and rightly so, that a fine jazz performance erases the bound• aries of jazz "movements" or fads. He seems to be able to spot insincerity in any phalanx of jazz musicians. And he has yet to be blinded by the name of a "great"; his recent column on Bil- lie Holiday is the most clear-headed analysis I have seen, free of the fan- magazine hero-worship which seems to have been the order of the day in the trade. It is true that a great singer has passed away, but it does the late Miss Holiday's reputation no good not to ad• LETTERS mit that some of her later efforts were (dare I say it?) not up to her earlier work in quality. But I digress. In Mr. Balliett's case, his ability as a critic is added to his admitted "skill with words" (Turley). He is making a sincere effort to write rather than play jazz; to improvise with words,, rather than notes. A jazz fan, in order to "dig" a given solo, unwittingly knows a little about the equipment: the tune being improvised to, the chord struc• ture, the mechanics of the instrument, etc. -

Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries. Until then, to give you the fullest sense of each session, please consult the original entry as well as information here. At every gig Freddy would announce it was his birthday, which, at 89 years old, every day you’d want to celebrate as such! He’d also let everyone know he was playing the ‘safe sax’... really a description of his mellow tone inspired by his heroes such as Dexter Gordon and Coleman Hawkins. Musicians would regularly pop in and Freddy enthusiastically welcomed them to sit in. It might be one of the Marsalis brothers one night or Bono from U2 another C night. In the early ‘80s, Jaco Pastorius sat in for a legendary set. But it was also always O U a delight to hear a young high school or college musician cutting his teeth and then R T see Freddy spending his break encouraging them. E S T Freddy grew up in Denver but, like many other hometown jazz musicians across Y America, did move away to ‘the big city’ early in his career to pursue more opportunity. O F In his case, he moved to Los Angeles and for a while had some success with the West A Coast jazz scene. Denver was lucky to have him back in town. Freddy was a jazz icon N D in Denver. II H. RAGTIME – THE DAVE WILLMORTH/MAPLE LEAF CLUB ARCHIVE It is seldom that a single musical archive could be described as “definitive,” but this collection of musical materials devoted to, and documenting, the rediscovery, re- examination, and renewal of classic American ragtime in the period of roughly the 1960s to the 1990s is a monument to the enthusiasm and sustained interest of a group of researchers, including Dave Willmorth, associated with the Maple Leaf Club of Los Angeles. The archive, consisting of more than 800 cassettes and nearly 300 reel to reel tapes, includes examples of the playing of younger ragtime performers, as well as performances by the older generation of performers and interpreters. There is extensive presentation of the music of the last surviving major ragtime composer, Joseph Lamb, as well as newly composed rags by dozens of writers, from obscure beginners to established classical artists like William Bolcom. To extend the range of the material there are examples of earlier related recordings by jazz artists like Jelly Roll Morton. The archive is an incomparable resource for anyone interested not only in ragtime, but in American popular culture itself. A partial list of artists represented: Joseph Lamb, Eubie Blake, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, Earl Hines, Jimmy Yancey, Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Itzak Perlman, Andre Previn, Jean Pierre Rampal, William Bolcomb, Brun Campbell, Trebor Tichenor, David Thomas Roberts, John Arpin, Max Morath, Knocky Parker, Bob Darch, Frank French, Joshua Rifkin, John Arpin. Also in the archive are recordings of most of the major ragtime festivals in the 1970s to 1990s, including the major festival at Sedalia, Missouri, and the important Toronto festival. -

1 The BARITONESAX of ERNESTO CACERES “ERNIE” Solographers: Jan Evensmo with Arne Bryn and Ola Rønnow Last update: Oct. 7, 2020 2 Born: Rockport, Texas, Nov. 22, 1911 Died: San Antonio, Texas, Jan. 10, 1971 Introduction: The day I heard Ernie Caceres play “Body And Soul” with Eddie Condon, I realized that he was one of the best baritonesax players ever in the swing tradition , regardless of colour. Incredible how such a good musician can be almost forgotten! During the year 1944 he made more beautiful soli on his instrument than most challengers do in a lifetime! Early history: Clarinet from an early age, also studied guitar and saxophone. Worked with local bands from 1928, then worked with the “family” trio. Long spell with brother Emilio’s small band including residencies in Detroit and New York. Joined Bobby Hackett in summer of 1938, played tenorsax in Jack Teagarden’s band from February 1939. Briefly in big band led by Bob Zurke, then with Glenn Miller from February 1940 until summer of 1942. With Johnny Long’s band from March 1943, with Benny Goodman in October 1943. Joined Tommy Dorsey in December 1943. Worked with Benny Goodman and Woody Herman in 1944, U.S. Army service from spring 1945. Took part in many recordings with Eddie Condon alumni during the 1940s and 1950s (ref. John Chilton). Message: I am very sorry I did not realize how fine a clarinet player EC was! When you below find reference to ‘have EC’ it means baritonesax only. However, he may play beautiful clarinet soli, not noted.
