Barnhart’s Bude Beach Bum Band (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

Jeff Barnhart - /Vocals; Ceri Williams - Trumpet; Paul Munnery - Trombone; John Hallam - Reeds; Jim Swinnerton - Double Bass; Graham Smith - Drums (Tue); Jack “The Lad” Cotterill - Drums (Wed, Thu) Jeff Barnhart Swingtet (Tuesday)

Jeff Barnhart - Piano/Vocals; John Hallam - Reeds; Jim Swinnerton - Bass; Gra- ham Smith - Drums . Ivory & Gold® (Wednesday)

While Jeff Barnhart is now a highly regarded pianist, vocalist, arranger, bandleader, re- cording artist, composer, pedagogue and entertainer, he had very humble beginnings. Jeff began his professional career at age 14 playing and entertaining four nights a week in a restaurant in his home state of Connecticut. Here he began to learn the classic swing, jazz and ragtime repertoire of the early 20th century. Jeff put himself through college playing throughout New England including stints with one of his childhood influences, the Galvanized Jazz Band. In the 1990’s he toured the US and Canada, playing most of the major festivals on the circuit with either the Hot Cat Jazz band or the Draga-Vax Connection. The 21st century has found Jeff constantly appearing as a soloist and band pianist at parties, festivals, clubs and cruises in all corners of the globe. He currently manages the Titan Hot 7, one of the most acclaimed bands in the country. In addition, he leads two bands in the UK: The Fryer- Barnhart International Jazz Band, which concentrates on hot music of the 1920’s, and Jeff Barn- hart’s British Band, which performs small group swing of the 30’s. Due to his versatility, vast reper- toire and vibrant energy, Jeff is in increasing demand as a participant in international jazz events as either a soloist or as pianist in All-Star Jazz ensembles. In addition to his widely acclaimed solo and band appearances, Jeff is enjoying great success performing with smaller groups, most notably Ivory & Gold, a group he co-leads with his talented wife, flutist Anne Barnhart, which also features Grammy-Award winning drummer, Danny Coots. Ivory & Gold has become a mainstay at many jazz and ragtime festivals throughout the US and the UK. Jeff enjoys playing dual piano and has done so with such jazz luminaries as Ralph Sutton, Neville Dickie, Louis Mazetier and John Sheridan. In addition to his own label, Jazz Alive Records, Jeff plays piano and sings on the international labels GHB, Summit-World Jazz Records, Music Minus One, and the two largest jazz labels in the UK, Lake Records and P.E.K. Sound. Most recently, Jeff has joined the roster of artists featured on the Arbors Records label, with 4 recordings currently available: the most recent featuring jazz legends and Bucky Pizzarelli. Jeff has re- corded as both pianist and vocalist on over 75 full-length . Dennis Armstrong’s Great Northern Jazz Band (Wednesday, Thursday) The Great Northern Jazz Band was formed in 1991 by Dennis Armstrong and David Jenkins. With the exception of David, all the musicians lived in the north of England, or came from there. Over the years that “qualification” has lapsed, and many fine musicians from around the country have played with the band. They come together to do short tours, largely for their own enjoyment. The emphasis is on collective playing in a relaxed and swinging manner. Dennis Armstrong - Cornet; Peter Curtis - Reeds; Terry McGrath - Trombone; Mal- colm Hogarth - Piano; Isabel Toner - Bass; Warren Latham - Drums; Malc Hurrell - Banjo.

Des Bacon’s Red Hot Syncopators

with Ed Hughes (Friday) Prepare to be transported back in time to the late nineteen twenties in the United States of America. It was the time of flappers, gangsters and bathtub gin, when people danced the Charleston, the Black Bottom and the Lindy Hop. It was the time when the phonograph, the wireless and dance halls were current crazes. It was also the time when Classic Jazz came to its fruition with bands like those of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson. The Big Band style which we know today had just been invented and New Orleans musicians had moved north to Chicago and New York where they were joined by others from the Mid West and beyond, combining to revolutionise the sound of popular music. Des Bacon’s Red Hot Syncopators have made a study of several hundreds of recordings from that era and have developed individual styles, so as to recreate that music with all its original energy, passion and excitement. The band has a wide appeal, delighting audiences as diverse as serious students of jazz or those who just enjoy a happy foot-tapping sound. Steve Graham - Trumpet; Tom Whittingham - Trombone; Des Bacon - , Alto & Soprano Saxes; Arthur Vincent - Clarinet, Tenor & Soprano Saxes; Malc Hurrell - Banjo; Tony Mann - Sousaphone; Mike Pike - Drums; Ed Hughes - Vocal Refrain

He and his younger brother Russell are the sons of pianist, vocalist and trombonist Martin Bennett who played with Phil Mason’s New Orleans All Stars. An extremely exciting trumpet player, fine Ceri Williams (trumpet) studied at the Welsh College of Music & Drama where he became very adept at table football vocalist and respected band leader, and although based in North Cornwall, and pool. Paul Munnery (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Richard Leach’s 7 Stars of Jazz Paul Munnery is well known for his 1920/30s jazz orchestra, Harlem, whose reliance on tight arrangements is enjoyable but sometimes restrictive. He is a (Thursday, Friday) most sought after sideman playing with many of the top flight bandleaders of Richard Leach's 7 Stars of Jazz has a style reminiscent of the Alex Welsh Band, which, from the mid 1950's to the today. The main musical influences on Paul have been the great New York early 1980's, was Britain's foremost Chicago/Dixieland style jazz band. When asked, many people have said that the trombonists of the interwar period – J C Higginbotham, Tricky Sam Nanton, Benny Morton and Jimmy Harrison. Classic Concert recorded in Dresden during 1971 remains his personal favourite. With the perfect eclectic mix of Chicago, Swing and Dixieland plus a hint of Vaudeville, the band doesn't just play jazz it entertains the audience. It is impossible not to be swept along with the atmosphere. This then is the basis of Richard Leach's 7 Stars of Jazz, not to be a direct ‘tribute’ band to Alex Welsh but a band that plays with a similar energy and skill plus the ability to entertain an audience with a variety of musical styles. Richard Leach - Trombone; Gordon Whitworth - Trumpet, New Orleans Heat Vocals; Chris Pearce - Reeds; Mike Graver - Piano; Brian Mellor - Banjo, Guitar; Roger Davis - Bass; Graham Smith - Drums.

(Thursday, Friday) The New Orleans Heat is a seven piece band playing the old style New Orleans Jazz, recreating the music of the Crescent City, be it a stomp, blues, hymn, spiritual or pop song of the day. The band base many of their numbers on the style of the bands of Bunk Johnson, George Lewis and Kid Thomas. The band’s motto is “Helping to keep the Real Jim McIntosh’s Jazzoholics Jazz alive”. The New Orleans Heat travel extensively throughout Britain and Europe performing in jazz festivals, theatre dates, jazz clubs, hotels, and also (Tuesday) appear at church concerts. He did this on the 7 July 2007, and it was supposed to be just for fun. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately!) people seemed to like the band, and clubs and festivals wanted it. So, eventually Jim had to be a bit more serious about his group, and take more bookings and eventually hit the Continent, and, in, par- ticular, Denmark. The band has proved very popular at clubs, and has been well received at Silkeborg Jazz Festival, Chris Newman where it has appeared for three years running. Also, the band has played Gothenburg Jazz festival twice, and is performing at Dresden International Dixieland in May, 2013. The Jazzaholics play good, swinging, no nonsense Tradi- (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) tional jazz, with good showmanship, and plenty of humour, which is very important these days!
