From Father Perry On Saturday of this weekend, June 9, Bishop da Cunha is ordaining three young men to the priesthood for our diocese. They are Father Matthew Gill, Father Daniel Nunes and Father Juan Carlos Montoya. Please keep these three young men in your prayers as they begin their lives as priests of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I am especially pleased to announce that Father Matthew Gill will be assigned here at our parishes, as the Parochial Vicar, after Labor Day. For the summer months, Father Gill will be assigned to the parish in Nantucket. As we get closer to that time, the bulletin will keep you informed.

This weekend we will have the installation of all those who serve us in the capacity as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. At each of the Masses they will be called upon to renew their commitment to bring the Eucharist to the homebound as well as assisting at the Masses. It is both a great honor and privilege to serve in this ministry of bringing our sacramental Lord to those who so anxiously await receiving Communion. The installation is taking place this week, rather than last week, because of the guest speakers who spoke about Catholic Charities at all of the Masses.

Last weekend the Church celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi, a time that the Church calls us to pay particular attention to the extraordinary gift of the Eucharist. This is an ideal time for us to reflect upon this gift and how we in turn then, with reverence and respect, receive the Eucharist.

The Church allows us the privilege to receive Communion (the Host) in the hand as well as the more traditional way of on the tongue. The Church teaches us that the fullness of grace is conveyed by receiving Communion as either the Body or Blood of Christ. The fuller sign of the Eucharist is to receive both the Body and Blood of Christ. Receiving Communion demands that we do so, recognizing the sacred gift that is offered to us, and that we should always be cognizant of what Jesus did at the Last Supper and what He does for us now as we receive the very essence; body, soul and divinity of our Lord. As the summer season will soon be upon us, as well as a more relaxed disposition that goes with the season, we must never grow lax in our respect and reverence for this most precious gift of the Eucharist.

The practice of intincture (the host dipped in the most precious blood) is only permitted, by Church law, when the priest or other minister of the Eucharist does it. It is never permitted by the communicant out of concern for respect of spilling the Most Precious Blood. A real practical concern is that some people receive from the cup only, because they have gluten allergies or intolerance. If the person ahead of them dips the host in the Most Precious Blood they could unknowingly be creating a health hazard for the person behind them. Therefore, Communion by inticture is not permitted, and I would ask the Extraordinary Ministers to be sure of it. So don’t be offended if you are corrected.

His Excellency, the Most Reverend Edgar M. da Cunha, Bishop of Fall River, has authorized the formation of a new class for the formation of Permanent Deacons beginning in the spring of 2019.

Who Is the Deacon? Let them be merciful and zealous, and let them walk according to the truth of the Lord who became servant of all . St. Polycarp’s admonition to deacons, Lumen Gentium, #29

The Order of Deacons was restored as a permanent and public ministry in the Roman Church at the Second Vatican Council. The aims of the diaconate are to enrich and strengthen the works of service being performed by the Church, to enlist a new group of devout and competent married and single men in the active ministry of the Church, and to aid in extending needed charitable and liturgical service to the faithful. Wives of deacons assist in many of these areas. The number of deacons has continued to grow steadily, and there are now more than 15,000 permanent deacons ministering in the United States. There are more than 90 active deacons in the Diocese of Fall River, and nine men currently in formation. A deacon is ordained to the three -fold ministry of Word, Liturgy, and Charity, working in obedience to his bishop and in close fraternal cooperation with priests. Through Holy Orders, the deacon acquires a special relationship to the bishop. While all Christians are called to serve others, the deacon is an icon of the Servant Christ in the Church. The deacon should be a creative leader, one who gradually initiates a meaningful response of loving service from the community to those who are in spiritual or material need. The deacon’s ministry of Word, Liturgy, and Charity may include: Continued, page 6 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018
