Some of the stories around the airbase are known to a few in the vicinity – primarily those involved in Historical Societies such as those at Bramham and Tadcaster.

    So who really shot the Red Baron down? Happily for all who respect the chivalry of those magnificent men in their World War One flying machines, 21 April 2018 is the one hundredth anniversary of the day Baron Manfred von Richthofen, alias the Red Baron, made history, but unhappily with events surrounding the shooting down of his Fokker DR1 triplane on 21 April 1918, which caused the death of this 25 year old ace who had 80 kills of British allied aircraft to his credit, still being debated by many 100 years later. The unanswered controversial question still fascinating many is: “was the Red Baron shot down by Canadian pilot, Captain Roy Brown, flying a Camel fighter pursuing the Red Baron, who was in fact chasing and shooting at another Canadian, a novice flyer Lieutenant Wilfred May, or was he brought down by ground fire from below … and if so who fired the bullet that killed him”.     Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame to Induct Four New Members and Honour a Belt of Orion Recipient Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame (CAHF) will induct four new members at its 42nd annual gala dinner and ceremony to be held Thursday, June 4, 2015, at the Skyservice hangar in Toronto, Ontario, at the Toronto Pearson International Airport. The annual black-tie event is a highlight in Canadian aviation celebration and draws attendance from across Canada. To be honoured by CAHF in 2015 are: Arthur Roy Brown, DSC: Known to most Canadians for his decisive involvement in the epic action of 21 April 1918 resulting in the demise of Manfred von Richthofen, the “Red Baron.” Brown had an outstanding record of service in the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Air Force. He was an outstanding combat leader who persevered on active duty despite poor health and injuries. He never lost a member of his flight because of the care he took in introducing newcomers onto operations. Postwar, his steadfast interest in flying led him to found a highly successful aviation company operating in northern Ontario and Quebec westward to Manitoba throughout the 1930s. In poor health and suffering the medical effects of his wartime crashes, he died at the young age of 50 in 1944. James Stuart “Jim” McBride: From initial roots in the technical side of the RCAF, Jim McBride used his entrepreneurial talents to build successful franchises for the marketing of Piper aircraft and Hughes helicopters across Canada. From modest beginnings in the charter business supporting Manitoba Hydro in its major power projects in northern Manitoba, he went on to develop profitable and innovative air transport businesses culminating with the rescue and turnaround of the Winnipeg based regional carrier, Transair.

Its farmland was requisitioned and transformed into landing grounds for aeroplanes, balloons and air stations, the Defence of the Realm (Consolidation) Act, 1914 conferring on the competent naval and military authorities 'an absolute and unconditional power to take possession of land and buildings … even though that act interfered with private rights to property.’ A judgement in the Appeal Court in July 1915, even decided there was no right to compensation.2 In August 1913 the Admiralty ordered the construction of a handful of coastal air stations to include a sub-command and station based at Cleethorpes; this did not materialise. However, it gained rights for a strip of land adjoining the Oil Depot at Immingham so the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), which was officially recognised on 1 July 1914, set up No. 8 Kite Balloon Section on the south bank of the Humber.     The American Fighter Aces Association Oral Interviews The Museum of Flight Seattle, Washington BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan) Fighter Pilots Reunion Recording Date: circa 1970 2 Abstract: This recording contains highlights from a reunion held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, circa 1970, for Canadian and British fighter pilots who were involved with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during World War II. Speakers share remarks and humorous stories about each other and pay homage to the wartime service of Canadian pilots. Identified speakers include German fighter ace Adolf Galland; British fighter aces James Edgar “Johnnie” Johnson and Douglas Bader; and Air Commodore John Fauquier of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Also included is an excerpt from a BBC radio broadcast of then-Wing Commander Johnnie Johnson giving a briefing on the eve of D-Day. Background: The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), also known as the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS), was an aircrew training program implemented during World War II by the Royal Air Forces of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. A reunion for BCATP-trained Canadian pilots was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, circa 1970, and the event included a luncheon attended by Canadian and British fighter pilots, as well as at least one German fighter pilot. Several of the speeches made by the guests of honor were recorded.
