Highlights from a recent Computer Weekly Interview – Key Points Background on EDF Energy • EDF Energy is one of the UK's largest energy companies. We provide power to a quarter of the UK's population via our electricity distribution networks in London, the South East and the East of England. • We supply gas and electricity to over 5 million customers and generate about 5GW of energy from our coal and gas power stations, as well as combined heat and power plants and wind farms. • The company is also a key player in national infrastructure projects, including the electrical upgrading of the London Underground, management of private electricity networks serving four London airports and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the country’s first new railway in 100 years. • We employ nearly 13,000 people at locations across the UK. EDF Energy is a core part of EDF Group, one of the world’s largest power companies. • We recently re-branded all our businesses under the EDF Energy name. We believe that by sharing one name, EDF Energy, we will be better able to demonstrate that we are a vital part of the UK energy market and will be better able to serve our customers. This gives us a strong single brand. We are an international group, a European leader, with 30m customers. Our size, expertise and experience are all deployed to the benefit of our customers. Background on the BI&T organisation • BI&T (Business Improvement & Technology) is made up of approximately 600 permanent employees and 300 to 400 external consultants and contractors. • The name BI&T (Business Improvement & Technology) reflects the wider scope of our organisation in comparison to a standard IT organisation – with responsibility for managing and delivering business change and business improvements for the entire company. • We are ‘the utility behind the utility’. At a high level, BI&T is responsible for managing the IT service for EDF Energy’s 13,000 employees, implementing end-to-end change initiatives across the company, and managing services that are critical to both EDF Energy and the community at large, for example; • Maintenance and development of the Networks Control Systems – critical in ensuring continuity of electricity supply to millions of people across the country. • Responsibility for the systems which read, bill and provide customer care services. In 2005 we sent 26 million bills. • Maintenance and support for the 24 hour trading and generation systems for our Energy Branch. We provide 24/7 application services to our trading systems, where energy is traded every 30 minutes. • EDF Energy has been going from strength to strength recently - and as a support function, we reflect this growth. At the moment we are looking to increase the number of in- house employees, particularly in the area of Project Management and business analysis.
