Disparrima from Latin “disparrima”, the most unlike, dissimilar, different or unequal referring to the species exhibiting the greatest difference from other renamed species previously described as A aulacocarpa. 2. Acacia melanoxylon Black wood/acacia/sally, light Melanoxylon from Greek “mela_s” black or dark: and “xulon” wood, cut wood, hickory, silver/sally/black- and ready for use, or tree, referring to the dark timber of this species. hearted wattle, mudgerabah, mootchong, Australian blackwood, native ash, bastard myall 3. Finally another source says that the name is derived from the Latin “Acmena” one of the names of the goddess Venus. Hemilampra from Greek “hemi” half and “lampro”, bright, lustrous or shining, referring to the glossy upper leaf surface. -

These were collected by M. V . C. Falanruw on a trip to Pagan Island in April, 1979. The new island records are presented below , along with some nomenclatural and taxonomic corrections to our 1975 list . Th e places referred to in that list are given in parentheses with each correction. Selaginella ciliaris (Retz.) Spring PAGAN: Caldera, Mt. Pagan, in stea m vent cave, 502 m, Falanruw 3310 (US). In the Marianas known only from Guam previously. Centosteca Iappacea (L.) Desv . ( Centotheca lappacea (L.) Desv .) This was previously recorded but under the incorrect spelling, Centotheca. The original spelling was Centosteca (Fosberg et al. 1975, p. 1 I) . Setaria geniculata (Lam.) Beauv . PAGAN: South edge of freshwater lake , 13 April 1979, Falanruw 3321 (US) . Apparently this species, as it is perennial, not reported previously from the Northern Marianas . P.) India.-250005 ABSTRACT Randia spinosa (Poir.) Rubiaceae is a deciduous, thorny shrub or a small tree, up to 9 m in height and 90 cm in girth with a bole 2-3 m found throughout India, up to an elevation of 1350 m. in the hills. The various parts of the plant (leaves, roots, seeds and fruits) are widely used by various tribal communities and forest dwellers for the treatment of variety of ailments. The fruits of the plant are ascribed to posses medicinal virtues as it is used as emetic and antipyretic. The plant is also documented to posses beneficial effects as anthelminthic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antileishmanial, antitumor, astringent, and diaphoretic, nervine calmative, nauseant, expectorant and emetic. It is believed to be useful in bronchitis, asthma, leucoderma, and diseases of the brain. Following various folk claims for cure of numerous diseases, efforts have been made by researchers to verify the efficacy of the plant through scientific biological screenings. A scrutiny of literature revealed some notable pharmacological activities of the plant as anticancer, anti- inflammatory, immunostimulant, antileishmanial and antihelminthic. The present review is an attempt to highlight the various ethnobotanical and traditional uses as well as phytochemical and pharmacological reports on R. spinosa. Acta bot. bras. 21(1): 79-98. 2007 Phyllanthus L. (Phyllanthaceae) em Pernambuco, Brasil1 Marcos José da Silva2,4 e Margareth Ferreira de Sales3 Recebido em 6/02/2006. Aceito em 3/08/2006 RESUMO – (Phyllanthus L. (Phyllanthaceae) em Pernambuco, Brasil). O estudo foi baseado na análise morfológica de materiais herborizados e observação em campo. Foram registradas 17 espécies diferenciadas, principalmente, através do número e forma das sépalas, número e união dos estames, além do sexo da inflorescência e ornamentação da testa das sementes. Dessas espécies, seis (P. amarus Schum. & Thonn., P. tenellus Roxb., P. caroliniensis Walt. subsp. caroliniensis, P. niruri L., P. orbiculatus L.C. Rich. e P. stipulatus (Raf.) Webster) apresentam ampla distribuição no Estado, quatro (P. chacoensis Morong, P. klotzschianus Müll. Arg., P. heteradenius Müll. Arg., P. claussenii Müll. Arg.) restringiram-se a zona das Caatingas, sendo P. chacoensis Morong restrita à vegetação ripária do vale do rio São Francisco e as demais (P. acuminatus Vahl, P. subemarginatus Müll. Arg., P. minutulus Müll. Arg., P. hypoleucus Müll. Arg., P. juglandifolius Willd., P. urinaria L. e P. grandyi M.J. Silva & M.F. Sales) são de ambientes florestais da zona da Mata, podendo ainda alcançar as florestas montanas, “brejos” de Altitude, do interior do Estado. Chave para identificação, comentários sobre afinidades e distribuição geográfica, bem como ilustrações, são fornecidas. This study was based on morphological analysis of dry material and field observations. The 17 species found in Pernambuco are recognized by sepal number and shape, number and fusion of the stamens, inflorescence sex and seed coat ornamentation.
