From the Vicarage

Thomas had doubts about the resurrection when he heard the stories of the disciples. He said to them, "Unless I see his hands myself ... I will not believe." Thomas was full of doubts until he was confronted with the risen Christ. Thomas looked at his hands and instead of touching the wounds, Thomas fell to the ground and said, "My Lord and my God." Sometimes, you have to discard your doubts and act on faith. You may have some lingering doubts. You may have some unanswered questions. You may have some things which will remain a mystery. But, like Thomas, we sometimes reach that point where we need to translate our doubts into acts of faith. Faith is coming to that point where we are standing on the edge of doubt and we can see no clear path ahead, but we go on in faith. We go on in spite of doubts. We go on in the faith that God is with us. When the history of this century is written, there will be the names of many prominent men and women. Let it roar. Let it rage. We shall come through." I think the Lord must have loved Winston Churchill. He translated his doubts into actions of faith. He helped his people see beyond the doubts in their minds and In this issue begin acting on the faith and hope of overcoming the storm. Doubts are a reality in our lives. In the summer sun the osteospermum opens its petals and the succulent apti- nea cordifolia (the baby sun rose) shows as little cerise cushions. There are gums and wattles in Wattle Alley and Dracaena palms and phormiums rustle in the breeze.

Headland is a cliff garden, rising from sea level to over 100 feet, with the sea breaking on the rocks below on three sides. At the bottom of a flight of over a hundred steps a gate opens onto a small, sandy bay, safe for swimming and sur- rounded by rocks and rock pools.

On the seaward side is a view along the South Cornish coast to Gribben Head and the Dodman, with a glimpse of Lizard on a clear day. Whatever the wind direction there is shelter somewhere in the garden. Only one and a quarter acres on plan, the garden seems bigger because there are so many levels and paths to find with intimate seats in clefts in the cliffs.

Plants and trees must be able to withstand salt laden gates, but one corner facing south has sub-tropical plants. Monterey pines with euonymus, elaeagmus, escallionia, olearia and sea buckthorn help protect the garden from the north winds which blow down the river.

SEASIDE PLANTS

Natural denizens of seashores are the plants most likely to succeed. Strangely, many of these come from New Zealand, among them the wind-resistant, sun-loving olearias and the long- flowering hebes. Most Mediterranean shrubs, like lavender, cistus, rosemary and cotton lavender (santolina) also do well.

Olearia x haastii is the best known of the daisy bushes, probably because it is the hardi- est and grows inland as well as near the coast. It attains a height of 4 -5 ft (i.2- i.5 m), with small, evergreen, oval grey-green leaves, which like those of most olearias are white and woolly underneath, and clusters of small white daisies in July and August. O. macrodonta, 4-6 ft (1.2-1.8 m) high, usually known as New Zealand holly, has toothed leaves and larger flower trusses in June. O. ilicifolia, one of the best, has grey-green, toothed leaves and fragrant white flowers in June; the Tasma- nian O. stellulata 'Splendens' has blue, pink and lavender-flowered forms. Call - 870273 South West Water.

We felt that the draft paperwork we received from South West Water relevant to the end of the Quay was not suitable and was not the way to proceed as it didn't cover the physical situation that South West Water has assumed. We are going back to them on this point which will cause even more delay but we feel that the legal situation must be done cor- rectly.

We are chasing Cornwall Council to try and resolve the legal issues relevant to the Quay Toilets. The matter of toilets in this location was the main one raised at the AGM in the section where questions were asked. The Trustees have discussed this matter at their recent meeting and are writing to the Parish Council about it. The Trustees are as anxious as anyone to have provision of public toilets in this location all year round and are prepared to support such a situation financially but not run the toilets themselves.

LANTEGLOS PARISH COUNCIL

IMPORTANT NOTICE

As local residents know, there is a ongoing problem caused by seagulls ripping open plastic rubbish bags, strewing around the unsanitary contents and making a general mess of our village.

The Parish Council requests that home owners and holiday visitors ensure that any rubbish for collection be put out

Early Monday morning and NOT BEFORE!

It is strongly recommended that householders put bin bags in a dustbin.

Owners of holiday lets are asked to provide their tenants with dustbins
