Lesley, who knows Labov’s work well, asked me, ‘Have you read Labov’s original paper?’ and pointed out that the comments by the textbook writer were in fact misguided and misguiding. Rather sheepishly I had to admit that I had not read that particular paper of Labov’s. When I did read the paper, I was astonished to find what Labov meant in the original paper was very different from what the textbook writer suggested in his comments. Since then, I have been rather suspicious of authors’ interpretations and comments, especially the sharply worded ones, on other people’s work. I have learnt the benefit of reading the originals. I am often amazed to see many of our otherwise quite brilliant students readily base their arguments on ‘second-hand’ interpretation and remarks. I understand that once on that ‘degree assembly line’, students do not have much choice but to turn out essays and reports very quickly. They do not normally have the time to delve into a wide array of publications, ranging from history and anthropology to neurology and artificial intelligence, in which research papers on bilingualism typically appear. I am nevertheless concerned that a new generation of ‘scholars’ might be emerging out of a ‘hear-say’ tradition. I have also learnt from my visits to Central America, and East and Southeast Asia, that many of the books and journals which we use routinely in our teaching and learning and which we take for granted are not always readily available in those places, because of inadequate library facilities. I have become concerned that research on bilingualism which deals with linguistic and cultural diversity is in fact inaccessible to the very people we wish to represent. It is with these concerns that I have decided to compile the present Reader. The main objective of the Reader is to make available in a single, affordable volume a selection of the most important research papers on bilingualism. I have focused primarily on the ‘classics’ in bilingualism research—papers that every newcomer to the field must read and the more established researchers frequently cite. Constraints of budget and space mean that it has not been possible to include all the papers I would like. I have deliberately excluded viii papers on bilingual education, language planning, language maintenance and language shift, and language attitude. A good reader on policy and practice in bilingual education already exists (Garcia and Baker, 1995), and the sociolinguistics readers edited by Coupland and Jaworski (1997) and Trudgill and Cheshire (1997) both contain key articles on language planning, language maintenance and language shift, and language attitude. Consequently, most of the papers in the present Reader focus on the micro aspects of bilingualism, especially on the language behaviour of bilingual individuals. All the chosen papers are journal articles or book chapters. Extracts from single authored monographs are not included, as a decontextualised digest is deemed inappropriate for student use. Some of the more recent papers published in easily accessible journals and books are also excluded. They, and the important single authored monographs, are listed under Further Reading at the end of each section of the Reader. Recently, handbooks have become a popular commodity. They are usually compilations of specially commissioned survey-type articles. There is no doubt that they provide a handy resource for students and lecturers. However, handbooks do not address the concerns I have specified above. In fact, handbook users may be more at risk of believing that they knew the subject without actually consulting, let alone understanding, the original formulation of ideas. I therefore declined the suggestion that was put to me to compile a handbook of bilingualism and chose instead to edit a reader of classic articles.

There were still parents then who were concerned that if their children learned another language it would ruin their English accent. If you would hear the tones of another languages every time they spoke English, how would they get a job and what would people think of them? Today, forty-five years later, we are still not “home” at convincing public opinion and the authorities that it is worth having all the languages we have today. Therefore, I want to start with this question, “What is lost when a lan- guage is lost?” It is amazing how people are uncomfortable about answering that question. I remember my mother always telling me, “When you start off a talk, make sure people know what the question is and ask a good question. A good question is worth everything.” And I would say to her, “Ma, you know, Americans, they start off a conference with a joke. You have to tell a joke for people to know that you’re about to speak?” She said, “Jokes? Ask a good ques- tion” That is an old Jewish tradition, if you have a good question, you have something worthwhile to worry about. Attitudes toward language-loss depend on your perspective. When a lan- guage is lost, you might look at that from the perspective of the individual.

Clopper Professor Donald Winford c Rachel Steindel Burdin, 2016 Abstract Intonation has long been noted as a salient feature of American Jewish English speech (Weinreich, 1956); however, there has not been much systematic study of how, exactly Jewish English intonation is distinct, and to what extent Yiddish has played a role in this distinctness. This dissertation examines the impact of Yiddish on Jewish English intonation in the Jewish community of Dayton, Ohio, and how features of Yiddish intonation are used in Jewish English. 20 participants were interviewed for a production study. The participants were balanced for gender, age, religion (Jewish or not), and language background (whether or not they spoke Yiddish in addition to English). In addition, recordings were made of a local Yiddish club. The production study revealed differences in both the form and function in Jewish English, and that Yiddish was the likely source for that difference. The Yiddish-speaking participants were found to both have distinctive productions of rise-falls, including higher peaks, and a wider pitch range, in their Yiddish, as well as in their English produced during the Yiddish club meetings. The younger Jewish English participants also showed a wider pitch range in some situations during the interviews.

While various fields have recognised the complexity and dynamism of human thought and behav- iour, intra-individual variation has received less attention in regard to language acquisition, use and change. Linguistic research so far lacks both empirical and theoretical work that provides detailed information on the occurrence of intra-individual variation, the reasons for its occurrence and its consequences for language development as well as for language variation and change. The current issue brings together two sub- disciplines – psycholinguistics and variationist sociolinguistics – in juxtaposing systematic and non- systematic intra-individual variation, thereby attempting to build a cross-fertilisation relationship between two disciplines that have had surprisingly little connection so far. In so doing, we address critical stock-taking, meaningful theorizing and methodological innovation. It’s probably a question we’ve all put to someone else. When we ask it of others we attribute it to curiosity. When it is put to us, we attribute it to difference, since when posed by strangers, as it most often is, it is as a general rule based either on how we sound or how we look. And yet both our interrogator and we ourselves understand at some level that the question is meaningless, even impertinent. It is rooted in a mythical sense of space and place. Lurking just below the surface is an unasked, ultimately unanswerable question: “Where do you belong?” Like every other notion, that of belonging is not some natural idea with which all of us come into the world but one constructed socially, and therefore ultimately historically. It is rooted in a particular social order, one that seeks to assign persons to definite geographical and social spaces. When we invoke this notion of space and place – the attempt to assign, as if by natural dispensation, persons to particular ethnic, national or other origins or identities – we draw, consciously or unconsciously, on received notions inherited from the past. Linguistics has long established that any child born into this world can learn any language natively.

Many students around the world now use English to communicate as a lingua franca with other non-native speakers. In order to meet the needs of their students and help them achieve their goals, teachers need to be aware of not only how their students are using English but the beliefs about English language learning that they are bringing into the classroom. Further, teachers must be aware of the extent to which their own beliefs are aligned with those of their students. This study of 86 students at four language centers in Malaysia, along with their 18 instructors, investigated the extent to which student beliefs align with an English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) framework, and the degree to which teachers share those beliefs and are aware of them. Students were asked to respond to 15 statements about their beliefs on the role of culture in language learning, frequency of error correction, native-speaker models and interlocutor beliefs. The teacher survey similarly asked teachers to respond to 10 statements about their beliefs and their awareness of student beliefs, while setting up three direct comparisons between what the students believe and what the teachers think their students believe. The study found that teacher beliefs largely seemed supportive of an ELF approach.

My many vivid memories of things Fishman said or wrote in my personal encounters with him – often pithy one-liners – are testimony to the power of his mind and voice, his spirit and soul. From my first year of Ph.D. study when I took his course Sociology of Bilingual Education at the 1980 Linguistic Society of America Summer Institute at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, through our interactions over the succeeding decades at conferences and talks, in personal visits and interviews, and around publications he invited me to write or vice versa, Fishman’s influence on my own academic career was enduring and profound.

Heritage languages offer new opportunities and pose new theoretical, empirical and methodological questions, in that tradi- tional lines of inquiry cannot be directly imported from the study of monolin- gual speakers alone; and even in comparison to other bilingual communities, the social contexts and patterns of language use over the lifespan do not map onto traditional L1/L2 models. The last two decades have witnessed an increased interest in formal and experimental research on heritage languages, building on both recent scholarship with wide-reaching implications (e.g., Benmamoun et al., 2013; Montrul, 2008), as well as foundational, twentieth-century works on immigration, migration, and language contact in the American context (e.g., Haugen, 1953; Weinreich et al., 1968). In addition to documenting language use in individual communities in language contact situations, the field of heritage language linguistics must engage with: • previous scholarship and approaches to the study of language use, which must be adapted or amended for the study of heritage languages; • the role of English in heritage language bilingualism in the u.s. as an enrich- ing or limiting factor; • the role of the pre-immigration sociolinguistic context and variety, both in the first (founder) generation of immigrants, and the possible continued exposure to the monolingual standard of the homeland; © Joshua R.
