Black Methodists in Nineteenth-Century Nova Scotia1
Towards Community: Black Methodists in Nineteenth-Century Nova Scotia1 ALLEN P. STOUFFER Works on African Canadian and Canadian Methodist history are virtually silent on black Methodism. This is surprising for black Methodists have been a continuing part of the provinces’ institutional religious life. In the Maritime provinces they participated in the post-revolutionary Loyalist migration to Nova Scotia and maintained a provincial presence throughout the nineteenth century. This paper examines black Nova Scotian Method- ism to the mid-nineteenth century as an aspect of black associational activity in nineteenth-century British North America.2 Methodists were among the 3,500 black Loyalists who came to Nova Scotia at the close of the Revolutionary War. They were most numerous on the province’s south shore around Shelburne where blacks settled in considerable numbers. Their principal leader was Moses Wilkinson, a blind and lame former slave from Virginia, who arrived in Shelburne on board the L’Abondance in August 1783 with 409 other blacks. Already evidently an avid Methodist, Wilkinson immediately began preaching in Birchtown, an adjacent black settlement. He was an effective exhorter for a religious awakening occurred among black immigrants there in the winter of 1783-1784. When William Black, the province’s future Methodist leader, visited Shelburne in the spring of 1784, he reported preaching to 200 blacks at Birchtown, sixty of whom were Wilkinson converts.3 Wilkinson’s first convert was Violet King, the wife of Boston King, a former slave from a plantation near Charleston, South Carolina. Violet, a North Carolina fugitive, and Boston met and were married in New York Historical Papers 2000: Canadian Society of Church History 196 Black Methodists in Nineteenth-Century Nova Scotia late in the war. -

1 ROOTS AND ROUTES The journey embarked upon by Black Loyalists destined for the Baha- mas was not marked by a rupture from their past experiences in colonial America, but rather reflected a continuity shaped by conditions of en- slavement and their entry into a British colony as persons of color. Like West African victims of the transatlantic slave trade, Black Loyalists arriv- ing in the Bahamas did not come as a tabula rasa, but rather brought with them various ideas aboutproof religion, land, politics, and even freedom. Thus, upon arrival in the Bahamas the lessons of the Revolutionary War were appropriated and reinterpreted by Black Loyalist men and women in a va- riety of ways, often with varying consequences. Such complex transmuta- tions within the Bahamas invite an analytical approach that examines the roots of such thought as it emerged out of the social and political world of colonial British North America. A brief examination of leading Black Loyalists in the Bahamas demon- strates that the world they lived in was indelibly shaped by the world they left behind. Prince Williams’ remarkable story began in colonial Georgia where he was born free, but was later “cheated out of his freedom and sold to an American.”1 Although his slave owner is never mentioned by name, Williams’ account reveals that he was forced to serve “this man” when “the British troops came to Georgia.” Taking advantage of the chaos of the American Revolution, Williams, in an act of self-assertion, escaped to the British side in order to claim freedom as a Black Loyalist. -

Mangum, March 10, 1832 Overview In a puzzle, each piece counts. Yet often when studying the Revolutionary War, we forget to acknowledge the important roles Africans and African Americans played, whether in fighting for either side of the war, or fighting for their own rights to freedom. Without including their pieces of the puzzle, the history we learn is incomplete. In this lesson, students will learn how Blacks were contributing to colonial society, making active choices to survive their bondage and striving to shape and control their own lives amidst the Patriots’ struggle for political freedom. By participating in an in depth class discussion centering around a Power Point presentation, students will explore the roles of Blacks during the Revolutionary War, gaining an understanding of the contradiction of a nation seeking independence while simultaneously denying freedom to those enslaved. Students will share their new understanding by creating an artistic bulletin board-sized puzzle (“Every Piece Counts”) focused on the roles African Americans played during the Revolutionary War. The Ideology All rights reserved. © Conclusion INTRODUCTION1 Understanding the movement and the ideology la- belled Calvinism is a rather challenging topic. But none- theless it is an important topic to tackle. As important as any part of such an endeavour is deciding on a “plan of attack” in getting into the topic. The movement covered by this label “Calvinism” has spread out its tentacles all over the place and in many different, sometimes in conflicting directions. The logical starting place is with the person whose name has been attached to the label, although I’m quite sure he would be most uncomfortable with most of the content bearing his name.2 After exploring the history of John Calvin, we will take a look at a few of the more influential interpreters of Calvin over the subsequent centuries into the present day. This will open the door to attempt to explain the ideology of Calvinism with some of the distinctive terms and concepts associated exclusively with it. I. The Persons From the digging into the history of Calvinism, I have discovered one clear fact: Calvinism is a religious thinking in the 1500s of Switzerland when he lived and movement that goes well beyond John Calvin, in some worked. -

It focuses on the lives and experiences of the Franck family from the 1750s, when Rufus Franck served in the French and Indian War, until the 1820s, when his younger son, Ben Franck, settled in Nova Scotia. At each step of the story, this study analyzes the communities of free people of color with whom the Franck brothers interacted. In doing so, this project challenges traditional narratives and stereotypes of African Americans during the Colonial and Revolutionary Eras. The Franck brothers’ individual histories, closely analyzed, have the power to expand the prism through which we view early American people of color, so that we see their reality more sharply in three ways. 1. The establishment of free families of color and communities throughout North America, from the pre-Revolutionary period until postwar America, was limited by social prejudices and legal prohibitions. -

Specific expectations are that students will develop critical-thinking skills that challenge their values and beliefs, explore historical links to the novel, understand an author’s motivation to write, and develop reflective skills so that they can connect to literature on many levels, including in relation to their own lives. A Word About the Content of the Novel Because of some disturbing scenes, it will be important for the teacher to know the students in order to determine the best approach for introducing the novel. Discussing words that some may find offensive will be critical. In addition, because of some explicit scenes, including ones of rape, infanticide and sexuality, it is recommended that teachers prepare an alternative assignment in case some students opt out for personal reasons. Teachers may wish to provide students with access to the illustrated version of the novel to accompany their reading and to allow them to gain further information about the novel’s social and historical context. Summary of the Novel As an old woman, Aminata Diallo is brought to London, England, in 1802, by abolitionists who are petitioning to end the slave trade. -

Chapter 8 Black Loyalist Hunger Prevention in Sierra Leone Cato Perkins and Isaac Anderson were hungry, and they were not alone. In October 1793 their hunger drove them from Free- town, Sierra Leone, to London, England. They had lived in Freetown for just over a year. Before moving to that small British colony on the upper Guinea coast, Anderson and Perkins had been enslaved in Revolutionary South Caro- lina, where they declared allegiance with their feet by running to the British during the war. Isaac Anderson threw in with the British as early as 1775, and in 1776 left for New York with Lord William Campbell. A man named John Perkins had enslaved Cato Perkins in Charleston, South Carolina—Perkins prob ably ran to the British during the siege of Charleston and possibly made it to New York with General Clinton. Thereafter the two men had lived free in Nova Scotia, before the Sierra Leone Company offered them the opportu- nity to migrate. In Freetown, Anderson, Perkins, and their fellow free black colonists distrusted the white people who now ruled them. In a move that by- passed the authority of their governor, the two men had traveled to England to directly petition the Sierra Leone Com pany. In London, they sent a draft of their petition to John Clarkson, their former governor in Sierra Leone, who now lived in England; they hoped he would listen to them and offer advice about approaching the com pany.1 Anderson and Perkins disliked their prospects in Africa. The Freetown col- ony was faltering, and although they hoped for “Land and [to] be able to make 178 BLACK LOYALIST HUNGER PREVENTION IN SiERRA LEONE 179 a Crop to support us” before the advent of “the rainy Season,” the com pany had not yet allotted land. -

John Macaulay and of his second wife, Margaret Campbell of Inverseger, was born at the manse of Inverary on the 2nd of May 1768. The clan MacAulay had long inhabited the western Highlands, and appears to have been considered a branch of the MacGregors. In a bond or deed of friendship1 between their chief, Aulay MacAulay of Ardincaple, and the chief of the MacGregors, which was executed in 1 591, MacAulay acknowledges to being a cadet of the clan MacGregor, and agrees to pay a tribute of cattle to his chief. -

If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Calvinism, Proslavery and James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw In the autobiography of James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, the first black author to be published in Britain, slavery was represented at best neutrally and at worst as spiritually and socially beneficial. Re-reading Gronniosaw’s Narrative in the context of the Calvinist and Dutch Reformed confessional networks facilitating its composition and publication, enables us to understand how and why a former slave would produce a text apparently advocating proslavery ideology. Gronniosaw’s case demonstrates that black intellectuals, far from being solely concerned with abolitionism, participated in a broad array of political, religious and social movements during the eighteenth century, occasionally even those that supported slavery.
