Silence Studies in the Cinema and the Case of Abbas Kiarostami
SILENCE STUDIES IN THE CINEMA AND THE CASE OF ABBAS KIAROSTAMI by Babak Tabarraee M.A., Tehran University of Art, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) January 2013 © Babak Tabarraee, 2013 Abstract This thesis is an attempt to formulate a systematic framework for ‘silence studies’ in the cinema by defining silence in pragmatic terms and suggesting different forms of filmic silence. As an illustration of my model, I examine the variety of silences in the works of Abbas Kiarostami, a notable figure of Art Cinema. The analytical approach suggested here can further be applied to the works of many other Art Cinema auteurs, and, by extension, to other cinematic modes as well, for a better understanding of the functions, implications, and consequences of various forms of silence in the cinema. Chapter 1 provides a working and pragmatic description of silence, applicable to both film and other communicative forms of art. Chapter 2 represents a historical study of some of the major writings about silence in the cinema. Chapter 3 introduces, exemplifies, and analyzes the acoustic silences in the films of Kiarostami, including the five categories of complete , partial (uncovered; covered with noise, music, or perspective), character/dialogue , language , and music silences. Chapter 4 introduces the concept of meta-silence and its trans-sensorial perceptions in communication and in arts, and then defines the four categories of the visual , character/image , narrative , and political silences in Kiarostami’s oeuvre. -

India Introduction When the 1959 Cannes Film Festival rewarded Les Quatre Cents Coups by François Truffaut and Hiroshima, Mon Amour by Alain Resnais, it not only confirmed the arrival of new cinema but also of a new generation. Within a span of few years around 1958-1962, almost thirty young directors who were less than thirty came into prominence by their sheer brilliance and have left behind a significant body of work, almost a treasure trove, for the later generations. It suffices to judge by some of the first feature films made by them from 1958 onwards, like Les Amants by Louis Malle , Lettre de Sibérie by Chris Marker. 1959 : Le Beau Serge by Claude Chabrol , Moi, Un Noir by Jean Rouch , Les Dragueurs by Jean-Pierre Mocky, Les Quatre Cents Coups by Truffaut, Hiroshima, Mon Amour by Alain Resnais. 1960: L’Eau à la Bouche by Jacques Doniol-Valcroze , A Bout de Souffle by Jean-Luc Godard , Le Bel-Age by Pierre Kast. 1961: Lola by Jacques Demy , Le Propre de l’Homme by Claude Lelouch, Paris Nous Appartient by Jacques Rivette. -

CIN-1103 : Nouvelle Vague Et Nouveaux Cinémas Contenu Et
I Think You'll Like It: an Experimental Film
I Think You’ll Like It: An experimental film Self-Determined Major Final Project Proposal Major: Film Readers: Adam Tinkle, Rik Scarce 1 Intro/ Background Through my study of film-making, I have developed a personal affinity for abstract films and nontraditional uses of video as an artistic and abstract medium. Video is often seen as a way to portray an event in the most literal and ‘true-to-life’ way. In studying film studies and production though, I have learned first-hand that no video can be truly objective. Just as any medium is informed by the creator’s point of view and the story they wish to tell, all of the creative tools that a filmmaker can use to make a piece also impact the meaning based on their individual perspective and the influence of their ‘eye’ on the final product. In the abstract works that I have studied, this -wide fascination with telling truth is focused more on deeper and less traditionally observable truths. Films like Hiroshima, Mon Amour, At Land, and Fuses use video to tell truths of the mind, heart, and soul that might otherwise be inexpressible. The layered use of visual elements like color, texture, and imagery, combined with audio layering act as tools to express these truths artistically. The self expression and portrayal of different parts of human experience are immersive and beautiful because of their nontraditional nature in these experimental films. For my final project, I propose creating an experimental 10 minute short film: I Think You’ll Like It, which explores senses, color, and imagination. -
