Colchester have had a good pre-season so far, beating Heybridge Swifts 6-0 and winning in Holland as well as holding their own against a full West Ham side on Saturday, so tonight will prove a stiff test for us. Looking back on the three games we’ve played so far, I used twenty-two players in the game against Ryman Premier side Canvey Island and put out two different sides in each haf. I thought we deserved the win and the players looked fit - I know the results aren’t important at this time of the year and it’s just about the fitness for the league and cup games though. The overall commitment and performance was first class from the players, and I thought the scoreline against last season’s Ryman North champions flattered Canvey in a game where we scored three Leiston. Only an 85th minute penalty provided the good goals through Bradley Stopher, Rob Whitnell visitors’ response. The tempo of the game was good and Ryan Imbert. We played some very good and the players are looking sharper in each game football at times, creating a lot of chances and that we play. deserving to win by more. Over the last couple of weeks I have improved the Looking back on the game versus Conference side squad with some good signings in the shape of Braintree and the system was changed to 4-2-3-1 Danny Emmanuel from AFC Sudbury, Jason Fontaine from the 4-4-2 used against Canvey. I just wanted from Grays Athletic, Tom Devaux from Stanway to look at a different formation, so I used the same Rovers and Ryan Imbert from Barkingside. These four twenty-two players and, again, gave them all a lads will give more competition for places to the half each. I was pleased with the performance and existing squad and it will be difficult at this moment we played some very good football at times again to pick my starting eleven for the first home game aginst a good Braintree team. Their goal was against versus Thamesmead on the 18th August. the run of play and we, as a team, could have done better. We scored a good goal through Sam Taylor Enjoy the game and get behind the lads. but I thought we should have had the lead before that, having missed a couple of good chances Regards ourselves. Then, with five minutes to go, they scored and that was a bit disappointing for the lads because we should at least got a deserved draw out of the game. On Saturday a goal in either half from Daniel Lopez Garry and Rob Whitnell earned us a very good 2-1 win Witham Town Football Club | 03 The Opposition COlCHeSTER UNiTeD nickname(s) The U’s Founded 1937 ground Colchester Community Stadium (Capacity: 10,084) Chairman Robbie Cowling manager John Ward 2011–12 League One 10th Club ReCords Record attendance: Layer Road, 19,042 (vs. Reading, 1948) Weston Homes Community Stadium, 10,064 (vs. Norwich City, 2010) Record league victory: 9–1 (vs. Bradford City, 1961) Record cup victory: 9–1 (vs. Leamington, 2005) Record league defeat: 0–8 (vs. Leyton Orient, 1988) Record cup defeat: 0–7 (vs. Preston North End, 2010) most points in a season (2 for a win): 60, 1973/74 most points in a season (3 for a win): 81, 1982/83 PlayeR ReCords highest fee paid: Steven Gillespie, £400,000 in 2008 from Cheltenham Town highest fee received: Greg Halford, £2,500,000 in 2007 to Reading most appearances (all competitions): Micky Cook, 700 (1969–1984) most appearances (league): Micky Cook, 613 (1969–1984) most league goals: Martyn King, 131 (1959–1965) most league goals by one player in a season: Bobby Hunt, 37 (1961/62) most league goals by one player in a game: Chris Iwelumo, 4 (vs. Hull City, 2006), Bobby Hunt, 4 (vs. Doncaster Rovers, 1962 & vs. Bradford City, 1961), Martyn King, 4 (vs. Bradford City, 1961) youngest league player: Lindsay Smith, 16 years 214 days (vs. Grimsby Town, 1971) most capped player (whilst at the club): Chris Coyne, 7 (Australia) league honours Football league one Runners-up 2005–06 Football league third Division Playoff Winners 1997–98 Football league Fourth Division Runners-up 1961–62 Football Conference Champions 1991–92, Runners-up 1990–91 Southern Football league Champions 1938–39, Runners-up 1949–50 CuP honours Football league trophy Runners-up 1996–97 Fa trophy Winners 1991–92 Watney Cup Winners 1971–72 essex Senior Cup Winners 2009–10, Runners up 2011-12 Southern league Cup Winners 1939–40, 1949–50 essex Senior league Challenge Cup Winners 1974–75 (Colchester United ‘A’) Witham Town Football Club | 05 ADVERT 06 | Witham Town Football Club The Opposition COlCHeSTER UNiTeD britain’s oldest recorded town hosts the RiValRieS youngest of all current league members.
