The winner of the game would be promoted to the promised land of the Premier league with away trips to the Emirates stadium, Anfield, Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge. Cardiff arrived into the final having only lost twice in 13 games losing to Derby and Leicester City in the second leg of the play-off semi-final. Blackpool on the other hand came into the final with 8 wins from 10 after losing to champions Newcastle and drawing to Bristol City. Effectiveness of In-Season Manager Changes in English Premier League Football
Effectiveness of in-season manager changes in English Premier League football Lucas M. Besters*, Jan C. van Ours** and Martin A. van Tuijl*** May 9, 2016 Abstract We analyze the performance effects of in-season manager changes in English Premier League (EPL) football during the seasons 2000/01 – 2014/15. We find that some managerial changes are successful, while others are counterproductive. On average, performance does not improve following a managerial replacement. The successfulness of managerial turnover depends on specific highly unpredictable circumstances, as we illustrate through case-studies. Introduction Football is very popular worldwide. In Europe and Latin-America, football has entertained crowds for more than one century. In other continents, interest has increased in the past decades. Top players now move to the football leagues of Australia, Japan and the United States, and, more recently, also to the league of the People’s Republic of China. Both clubs and national associations employ top-class managers from all around the globe to coach their squads. Furthermore, top clubs have an enormous global fan base. The great interest in football is not restricted to fans seeking entertainment. Professional sports, in general, and professional football, in particular, have proven to be a fruitful soil for scientific research. -
A Study of Institutional Racism in Football
THE BALL IS FLAT THE BALL IS FLAT: A STUDY OF INSTITUTIONAL RACISM IN FOOTBALL By ERIC POOL, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Eric Pool, September 2010 MASTER OF ARTS (2010) McMaster University (English) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: The Ball is Flat: A Study ofInstitutional Racism in Football AUTHOR: Eric Pool, B.A. (University of Waterloo) SUPERVISOR: Professor Chandrima Chakraborty NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 127 ii Abstract: This project examines the ways in which the global mobility of players has unsettled the traditional nationalistic structure of football and the anxious responses by specific football institutions as they struggle to protect their respective political and economic hegemonies over the game. My intention is to expose the recent institutional exploitation of football's "cultural power" (Stoddart, Cultural Imperialism 650) and ability to impassion and mobilize the masses in order to maintain traditional concepts of authority and identity. The first chapter of this project will interrogate the exclusionary selection practices of both the Mexican and the English Football Associations. Both institutions promote ethnoracially singular understandings of national identity as a means of escaping disparaging accusations of "artificiality," thereby protecting the purity and prestige of the nation, as well as the profitability of the national brand. The next chapter will then turn its attention to FIFA's proposed 6+5 policy, arguing that the rule is an institutional effort by FIF A to constrain and control the traditional structure of football in order to preserve the profitability of its highly "mediated and commodified spectacle" (Sugden and Tomlinson, Contest 231) as well as assert its authority and autonomy in the global realm. -

Photograph: 101greatgoals. A COLLECTIVE SIGH was let out when Alan Pardew was appointed manager of West Brom in January, as yet another struggling English team in the Premier League had made another uninspiring appointment. It is no surprise, then, that 3 months later Pardew has been sacked with only one league win to his name, leaving the Baggies 10 points adrift of safety. West Brom are not alone, however, as established middle aged journeyman coaches are littered throughout the wasteland of struggling Premier League sides: David Moyes, Mark Hughes, Paul Lambert, Sam Allardyce, Roy Hodgson – with an average age of 57.8 – represent the glass ceiling for successful young managers looking to climb the ladder in England. When Marco Silva was appointed Hull City manager last season, Sky Sports Soccer Saturday pundits Phil Thompson and Paul Merson bemoaned another “foreign manager” gaining a Premier League job at the cost of young English managers, the example given by Merson was Gary Rowett. -
